paleo for weightloss

yumyumpoppycat · 18/06/2014 15:28

Was sorting out some books to take back to the library and found Chris Kresser's your personal paleo Diet. It pretty much fell open on the weight loss page - seemed to be a sign! Soooo enough messing around and procrastination, on the wagon off the wagon, I just need to get my head down and just plow on and lose weight....

Is anyone up for doing paleo or a similar diet with a focus on weightloss?

These are the additional rules, or I guess a good starting point before adding in usual paleo 'rules' :
Eat more protein
Don't snack
Go dairy free
Reduce calorie density by eating more veg
Eat all food within an 8 hour window

and one more for me - in bed by 11.

Will update but be great if others join in!

Positive. Let me know how you get on Grin

RiffyWammal · 24/07/2014 21:29

Hats off to you Charlie (and anyone else with a busy life!), I don't know if I would have coped with transitioning to paleo if I worked at all never mind full time!

That home-made coconut milk doesn't sound to hard to be fair, I could whizz it up in my Nutribullet and it might not even need straining. But I probably won't bother lol. I follow Dr Terry Wahls' version of paleo for auto-immune diseases The Wahls Protocol; I've just checked my copy and she doesn't say anything about guar gum when she discusses what coconut milk to buy - she just says to avoid the kinds that have added sugar. And she really knows her stuff and goes into lots of detail about additives, nutrients etc so I am quite happy to carry on eating it!

CharlieSierra · 25/07/2014 08:53

Good to know about Dr Wahl. I think one way or another we all have busy lives or stuff going on. I know back when I was at home with young children I thought my ex had the easier time of it going off to the office for peace and quiet every day. Now they've all grown up and its my turn for the daily grind I yearn for more time in my veg patch and the freedom to slop around in casual clothes all day. The grass is always greener isn't it! I'm mostly enjoying cooking again, having got into the habit of popping into M&S every night on my way home (lazy) it has been a big change though.

daisychicken · 25/07/2014 09:36

A quick pop in to ask a question..... does anyone here do paleo and have Fibro?

I currently low carb but reading around paleo seems to be recommended more for Fibro.. I'm happy not eating bread, cakes, potatoes, rice, pasta etc.. but I do eat dairy and that's what seems to be the biggest change I'd have to make. I'm looking for more information and to see what everyone else is doing!

DogsRus73 · 25/07/2014 10:03

daisy, have you looked into primal? It's similar to paleo but with some dairy allowed (cream and cheese are allowed I think but not normal milk). I don't know much about it but I am accidentally doing a version of it as I started with paleo but then added in dairy as I get joint pain without enough calcium so I added some dairy back in and the pain subsided again. I was expecting the dairy to slow down the weight loss but it hasn't, I've still been losing 1 or 2 pounds a week even with cheese and cream in my diet.
Rejoicing this morning as for the first time in 3 years my weight is under 10 stone. My Wii reliably informs me I have 3lbs to go! It seemed so daunting in May when I was almost 12 stone, I can't believe how effortless it's been. I've been purposely avoiding thinking about what to do when I reach my target. I want to stay on this way of eating because I feel so much better but at some point I need to stop losing weight. Has anyone else met their target weight and if so what did you do? I was thinking of staying pretty much the same but eating more sweet potatoes or even normal ones (currently I have them about twice a week, if I had them everyday would that stabilise my weight?)

RiffyWammal · 25/07/2014 10:08

Hello Daisy! I follow the Wahls paleo diet for my MS and people have found it has also helped their fibromyalgia - some mentions here. It's a really great book and I am seeing wonderful improvements after just over 3 months. It is a bit different from some paleo as it stresses what to eat to improve your health as much as what not to eat, if you see what I mean. It shows 3 different levels of the diet so you can choose yourself which you feel comfortable following.

My friend has fybro and she has recently become vegan for moral reasons, and I wish she would read this book as she is feeling worse on her diet. I don't say anything though apart from sharing how well I feel, in the hope that she may come around by herself and be open to considering how diet could help her. She has just replaced meat and dairy with processed crap and sugar Sad

FavadiCacao · 25/07/2014 14:21

Hi Daisy, Primal does allow dairy, including milk. As with paleo it concentrates on the quality of the product. A primal approach would be to source raw milk and raw milk cheeses, which is so easy in the UK (most farmers market or cheese farms).

Riffy, sorry you were misunderstood and misinterpreted at times on your thread on 'chat'. I find it rather unfortunate that Mumsnet split the Big/slim/whatever section as it left some people in limbo as to what group they belong (maybe a gluten free section might have been helpful). Paleo/Primal/Ancestral diets are often misunderstood because they are viewed as 'extreme' and 'unsustainable'. As you have noticed, people tend to lumps us in with the LC group, the cave men, the obsessed and the disordered. I wish people understood that Paleo et al is about the return to eating quality, nutritious and free from rubbish food. It's about eating real food, often from scratch with ingredients in their unadulterated form. (The mere thought of mince containing slime is somewhat sickening and unethical.) Some people do eat grains, including gluten containing ones (eg brown rice, spelt bread, sourdough); some people eat legumes (generally in the form of fresh peas, french and runnner beans or carefully prepared lentils/beans); some people choose a lower carb version (especially when loosing weight) but some people; some people even grow their fruit and vegetable. :)
I was a bit disappointed you were never given the link to the postprandial saturated fat being watched live. Sad

daisychicken · 25/07/2014 16:33

Riffy I've ordered the wahl book from the library so I can have a read through, all the links I've read sound like its worth a read. I'm suprised at your friend including processed rubbish and sugar in her diet... that to me is a given in the fact that it can't be helping us whether we are ill or not!

Dogs do you have any good links or book suggestions for primal eating? I'd like to be able to read around the subject to get a better idea of what the basic idea is about.

I lost 3 stone low carb'ing! but.. at the time I wasn't on medication and I was able to exercise (my version of exercise with digging allotments etc and walking the dog!) but now I can't walk far and i certainly can't dig Sad my weight is shifting upwards, it's within my "ok" range but I don't want it to go higher (& if I could loose a few lbs, I'd be happy).

Favidi I didn't think we could get raw milk in the UK anymore? Are farmers able to sell it without any comeback? Can I just ask a farmer?!

FavadiCacao · 25/07/2014 18:04

A good primal site (no book needed) is Marksdailyapple-sorry phone is not letting me link.

Yes, you can buy raw milk in the UK. There are at least two cheese farms iocal to me (one sells goat milk as well, the other brings the milk at th markets in cooler weather)and I kknow people in other counties who are able to buy it too. :)

CharlieSierra · 25/07/2014 18:13

Hi Daisy, I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis which is what lead me here, plus needing to lose weight too of course. I was eating some dairy, and seeing improvements but I'm currently doing 30 days on a slightly stricter plan which also cuts out dairy. If I find it suits me better I will stay with it. I find nom nom paleo and theclothesmakethegirl excellent for food ideas, recipes etc, agree marksdailyapple is great, I have his primal blueprint book.

RiffyWammal · 25/07/2014 19:51

Thankyou for your kind comments Favadi. I did feel rather frustrated at times! And I messed up and said I eat all but one of the food groups when I actually don't eat dairy either, but I'm not correcting myself cos I'll get the 'you need it for calcium!' lecture.

daisy please don't feel too depressed about not being able to exercise, it is only a small part of weight loss. I am very restricted in mobility and only walk slowly around the house and do yoga stretches etc, but I have seen great weight loss results since starting eating paleo. I used to eat a tasteless low fat diet, do an hour's punishing dvd workout 4 times a week and walk everywhere, and I still didn't lose much!

Wiifitmama · 25/07/2014 20:17

Hi

Just wanted to share my exciting discovery for any Paleo Londoners.....there is a food stall at Camden Lock market called Feed Me Primal. All their food is primal! I am going to check it out tomorrow and am very excited :). Also, there is a gluten free market there in August 1st which could be interesting.

On another London note, I was in Whole Foods this week and saw they had Paleo cookies and Paleo cake mixes. They are super duper expensive and I don't use that kind of stuff, but I think it is interesting that this stuff is becoming more mainstream.

FavadiCacao · 25/07/2014 20:26

Back in front of a computer!
You're welcome, Riffy. :)
Daisy, is a very inspirational video.Mark's daily apple homepage and Mark's Primal Blueprint. Also, you can enter Fibromyalgia on the Mark's custom search and a few articles will come up.

Re:raw milk. I meant to add that the farms I use have very stringent hygiene and quality control rules, they also employ highly qualified technicians and staff. Their raw milk makes the most delicious homemade cream cheese and yogurt.

I love NomNom paleo, too! :)

RiffyWammal · 25/07/2014 20:45

What do you all do for food if you go out for the day? I always find a Wetherspoons and order the salmon fillet and ask for it with extra veg but no jacket potato or dressing. I even take a jif lemon with me to squirt on it! Then I usually buy a tub of mixed fruit later for pud - and I take my own fruit tea bags out with me and just order a pot of hot water Smile

I don't think there's anything I can eat in any of the food chain restaurants. I wish a paleo restaurant would open where I live!

RiffyWammal · 25/07/2014 21:09

AARGH I just looked at that bloody thread again. Why?? I've hidden it now.

Typed out a rant but then calmed down and deleted it. Smile That's me smiling, nodding and ignoring.

I just read it too, very frustrating.

I've managed to eat out quite a few times, I just ordered fish or meat and veg. The only time it was really difficult was when I took my family out for posh afternoon tea, but I booked that before I changed diet and couldn't back out. I find having a drink out more difficult, just water really. Sad

yumyumpoppycat · 25/07/2014 22:10

Yes that's true charlie, had lunch out at work today at bella with an offer, I had sea bass, green beans, olives, red onions and some pesto that seemed freshly made, it was really nice but the only drinks option was water, can't really have a glass of wine on a work lunch! (?)

Wiifit - I think the south bank sometimes has some paleo friendly stalls too, there was a stand devoted to coconuts last year.

RiffyWammal · 26/07/2014 12:40

I have seen people raving about this coconut milk on a paleo facebook page - www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CPMJCAK/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_dp_8x10tb1GMKQ6DMWN#productDetails - if you look at the bottom picture you can see the ingredients, it just contains coconut milk and water.

I will probably stick to the cans and risk the guar gum because I don't really use much anyway - I use a ton of almond milk though, and am always looking for somewhere to buy it cheaper if anyone has any tips? Smile I'm getting through loads since discovering those paleo maple cinnamon lattes!

yumyumpoppycat · 26/07/2014 15:45

They look interesting riffy. Expensive outlay but not so bad if you work it out per carton.

Have lost another 2lb really surprised !!!! How can anyone say this is a disordered eating - any fruit and veg even white potato now, meat and fish , nuts (and dairy in my case at the mo) - but I am properly losing weight without recording food, weighing things or counting cals or carbs!!! I have been really relaxed and even shared a bottle of wine and some crisps with dp during the week......Maybe I have sweated the 2lbs off because its been so hot; what a yuk thought Envy

What is the best alcohol to have does anyone know? I should prob have red wine but it just seems nicer to have white in the hot weather. I don't normally drink - not sure what has come over me.

We have had a nice day and children have spent the day in the paddling pool, I dipped my feet in but the water was freezing...

Wiifitmama · 26/07/2014 16:09

Well I can confirm that the lunch at Feed Me Primal was amazing! They had one option only.....meatballs (pork or lamb) served with a veg sauce over a massive bed of cauliflower rice (but totally spiced up and delicious!) with raw spinach and tomatoes and loads of fresh herbs and chilli. It was filling and delicious. And I found out they are opening a second branch in Brick Lane if anyone is there!

Wiifitmama · 26/07/2014 16:11

Oh and to answer the question about eating out.....I generally find the biggest problem is that the protein portion is too small as the he meal is usually bulked out by the carbs we are other eating. For instance, Zizzi has a skewer of grilled meat that is very good. But for £13 it is tiny as you are meant to eat it with the potatoes to fill you up. I find it is often better value to order lots of starters that are protein heavy with a side of vegetables.

CharlieSierra · 26/07/2014 21:18

That lunch sound great. I'm in the provinces but my son lives in London and he's doing this too for ankylosing spondylitis, I'll let him know.

Alcohol wise it's red wine for preference, then white, then vodka I think. Beer is the worst. Well done on the weight loss!

yumyumpoppycat · 28/07/2014 19:14

Hi all!

Charlie I really hope the diet will help your son, has he had it for a while?

I skipped the alcohol in the end! I made a blunder though, I bought some nice sounding tesco finest chocolate from the dark chocolate section - chocolate orange and almond. I was convinced it had said 74% but unfortunately I didn't read the back label until I had eaten some and is full of all sorts of stuff including wheat!

Bit of a theme starting as I am having a curry with dp this evening as I am working early tomorrow and my children are with my mum tonight. Skipping normal peshwari naan and rice though and having spinach side.
