paleo for weightloss

yumyumpoppycat · 18/06/2014 15:28

Was sorting out some books to take back to the library and found Chris Kresser's your personal paleo Diet. It pretty much fell open on the weight loss page - seemed to be a sign! Soooo enough messing around and procrastination, on the wagon off the wagon, I just need to get my head down and just plow on and lose weight....

Is anyone up for doing paleo or a similar diet with a focus on weightloss?

These are the additional rules, or I guess a good starting point before adding in usual paleo 'rules' :
Eat more protein
Don't snack
Go dairy free
Reduce calorie density by eating more veg
Eat all food within an 8 hour window

and one more for me - in bed by 11.

Will update but be great if others join in!

I agree, cake does just happen sometimes.yesterday a bacon and brie panini just sort of happened to me :o

I'm trying to look at this as a lifestyle change rather then a diet with a time limit so I'm not going to beat myself up about a little slip. Instead I am looking at the success. This week I have had paleo lunch 4 out of 5 days and a paleo dinner 5 out of 5. Breakfast if not perfect but heading in the right direcion. Over the week my snacking has reduced hugely. Yesrday I didn't have a morning or an afternoon snack and felt absolutly fine. Previously I would have crashed horribly if I had attempted going between meals without eating but I didn't even realise I hadn't eaten my snack until I was on my way home from work.

On the whole I think that's pretty good going :)

yumyumpoppycat · 28/06/2014 17:54

Yes def agree - bigger picture is more important. Paleo with a 'slip' here and there is still what would be considered healthy eating overall? The issue for me is not letting a slip turn into a binge... although I'm not sure what I think of as a binge really is one, I would count three tesco donuts as a binge although I could comfortably eat two. I was Just looking at the 'how many donuts could you eat' thread - lots of people are saying an entire packet but quite a few voices have said only 1 and yet despite that they are still overweight. There def seems to be something in the theory that some obese people really don't eat that much more calories (or in some cases less) than many slim people?

Rash more or less gone now so going to try and get back on track and see what happens.

Just to clarify I am pretty sure I haven't ever eaten 3 donuts in a day ... Grin

Sorry, i am terrible for multi posting .... charlie your recipe looks lovely, chicken satay is one of my favourites. Did you use coconut aminos - have always wondered what that is?

OP posts:
CharlieSierra · 28/06/2014 23:16

Coconut aminos is a soy sauce substitute. I got it from Wholefood market, if you haven't got one near you they have it on Amazon. I used coconut oil to fry off the chicken and veg, and the sauce was made from coconut milk and almond butter with fish sauce and lime juice to taste. It was bloody lovely, had the leftovers for lunch today. I've slipped up tonight though, food wise fine, had a caprese salad and a steak, but 2 large glasses of chianti and a cosmopolitan. Oops!

yumyumpoppycat · 29/06/2014 18:42

Thanks, i will def try that recipe. We have similar stores but last time I checked the unusual american ingredients like coconut flour weren't stocked in them!

I got coconut flour from the same place. Haven't used it yet but was thinking of trying some baking. I've got family over from abroad and have eaten out all weekend, which has been quite easy, much more so than on low calorie or low fat, except for Wine again.

HearMyRoar · 30/06/2014 20:38

I've tried coconut flour and didn't really like it. It was more Coconut tasting then i expected and had a bit of an odd texture. But then I don't really like coconut that much so if you do like it you might like the flour. I tend to use ground almonds in all my baking.

Cindy34 · 30/06/2014 23:26

+1lb on last week. Too many cakes!

HearMyRoar · 01/07/2014 19:55

How

HearMyRoar · 01/07/2014 19:57

How do you feel in yourself Cindy? Do you feel better at all?

I had half a muffin today as someone brought them into work so I was sort of obliged to our he would have taken it personally. Oh well...

HearMyRoar · 01/07/2014 19:57

Sorry

HearMyRoar · 01/07/2014 19:59

Everything is going strange and keeps posting randomly.

I realised that other past sounded a bit odd. I meant do you feel better for all the healthier eating, even if you haven't lost weight? :)

CharlieSierra · 01/07/2014 20:51

Do you bake a lot? I haven't tried any paleo baking yet but I have the supplies in. I'd welcome any hints and tips.

I was feeling fantastic but I feel ravenously hungry and a bit shit today. Not sure if it's due to a few glasses of wine at the weekend and i did have some cauliflower cheese and 2 spoons of sticky toffee pudding.

Cindy34 · 01/07/2014 21:53

Feel better, less tired, more energy even after doing a gym class.

CharlieSierra · 02/07/2014 07:05

Cindy is that because you haven't cheated for a few days? I couldn't believe how bad I felt yesterday even after a minor lapse, it was like starting all over again. I don't know how much weight I've lost. I didn't weigh myself at the beginning as my scales needed a new battery, and now I'm in two minds. I know it's getting on for two dress sizes, the fastest and most efficient weight loss I've ever experienced, and I'm thinking it doesn't actually matter much what I weigh and there is a huge potential for disappointment and frustration in hopping on the scales all the time.

HearMyRoar · 02/07/2014 17:26

I've tried muffins [[http://www.amazingpaleo.com/2012/07/17/paleo-banana-muffins/]] which were yummy. Dh and dd both loved them as well so a big success. I usually make this bread [[http://ancestralchef.com/microwave-paleo-bread/]] a couple of times a week as a treat with my lunch. It is slightly odd but super quick and fills a bread shaped hole in my life occasionally.

I don't really like to weigh myself either. I get a bit too obsessed by it and find it an unreliable way to judge. I prefer just knowing that I feel better, my dress is definitely zipping up easier and I think I look better. :)

Actually I think just feeling better is big thing. I tend to eat more when tired and run down so I know just feeling more energised will help me lose weight.

HearMyRoar · 02/07/2014 17:29

Hmm... Those links didn't work at all. Try again

bread
muffins

CharlieSierra · 02/07/2014 19:04

Ok definitely baking this weekend, those links are great thanks. I have to go away for work tomorrow so hoping for the best. I will get up early enough to go for breakfast on Friday morning rather than getting coffee and pastries in the meeting room, just a bit worried lunch will be sandwich platters brought to us. Thursday night we're going out and I've already checked out the menu so should be fine.

I mentioned to DH about getting a battery for the scales and he said why bother, it's obviously working but everyone fluctuates day to day and it's disheartening. He has previous experience of me dieting indelibly imprinted on his memory! Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 02/07/2014 19:24

Charlie Sierra if it's working for you def don't start weighing, it is disheartening when the scales don't always reflect things accurately (muscle replacing fat, totm, too much salt, constipation! ...).

I haven't managed to get totally off wheat again since reintroducing to test the effect ... I feel like a fraud posting! I was doing a lot of strenuous gardening today but had egg on toast for lunch first and ended up with really low blood sugar feelings (suddenly felt sick, shaky and sweaty) so I know bread is not good for me even if paleo does give me a rash Confused . Have eaten some healthy meals too at least.

Def going to check those links Hearmyroar, maybe paleo baking will get me back on track!

I know we're not meant to count but I'm a control freak, so what kind of calorie count would paleo bread and muffins come in at? Presumably quite high if ground almonds are involved, although no sugar. I might have to do some calculations so I don't overdo it, banana bread would be very tempting right now.

CharlieSierra · 02/07/2014 19:52

Ignore me, muffin recipe has calorie info.

HearMyRoar · 02/07/2014 20:25

Don't count calories! They don't mean anything really. Just don't go crazy on the almond baked goods. I try and limit to a few things a week, which I think is OK.

Your dh sounds like a very sensible man charlie :o

My confession of the day is that I haven't managed to kick the wheat completely either yum. I still have toast for breakfast a few times a week. I am also consuming tons of milk. At least one latte or a coco drink most days Blush

Still, I think imperfect but heading in the right direction is better then not trying at all.. Right...

yumyumpoppycat · 02/07/2014 20:52

phew that's a relief hearmyroar Wine feel like I can stay now Grin. Very hard to resist the morning toast when buttering it for everyone else. Silly thing is I know I just need to give it 4 days wheat free and I will be totally unmoved be bread, it's just getting back to that when I have some that's tricky.

What kind of calories are you aiming for CS? Dp is shocked by my weight and he has agreed to lose 10lb if I will lose 40. i can sense a challenge let's say he is a bit more weighing scale obsessed than your dh!

OP posts:
CharlieSierra · 02/07/2014 22:04

I'm trying not to count calories, but I can't help keeping an eye on it, so I would be concerned about having a few hundred cals worth of baked goods on top of my normal food. I guess I'm still conditioned to think in terms of keeping it around 1300-1400. On the other hand a paleo muffin could serve as breakfast I guess, rather than random scoffing, since it's made of real food.
