'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Calamity - I would say don't beat yourself up too much. As it goes black forest gateau is largely cream, alcohol and cherries (if it's a good one Grin) and you only had a small bit. The lesson I'd learn from the experience is that if you're going to eat somewhere where you have no control over the food and don't want to be derailed, make sure you have a lovely low carb meal before you go so that you don't end up eating things you don't want to eat purely because of hunger.

But here we are, we start properly on Monday, and it's not as if you've just inhaled two boxes of Pringles or something, you had a home cooked natural meal that had rice in it (not so terrible really), and a small piece of cake. I try to tell myself that these things will of course set me back, that's the informed choice I make when I put it in my mouth. But the bigger picture is that you're taking control of your weight and your eating overall, and one meal is not worth beating yourself up over.

Moving onto my transgressions, I shared a bottle of Prosecco last night with a friend, who also turned up with a 100g bar of Green and Blacks (milk choc). I had one tiny square of chocolate which for me is quite an achievement. However my daily weighing shows a bit of the weight I'd lost back on (I had lost 4-5lb this week so far), so I've tried to just get back straight on it with a nice big scrambled egg/smoked salmon breakfast. Must keep my head in the zone this weekend.

I have lost ELEVEN POUNDS since the 3rd January. I am absolutely bloody gobsmacked.

Admittedly that was at the end of a period, I have a massive amount to lose, I've eaten like a pig all over Christmas and I'm sure a load of it is water but Oh My God!

So pleased. Smile

LauraBridges · 11/01/2014 08:03

Lucy that's wonderful.
(I've never lost more than a pound a week in my life ever (except when I gave birth, but that is just because I never have more than about a stone to lose and people like I am need not worry if they lose lower amounts as that's good too and normal with a sustainable way of eating for life. Even one pound is quite a bit - take a pound bag of some product and think you're not carrying all that around any more)

LucyVFood · 11/01/2014 08:11

Thank you :)

I really do have a lot to lose and it can be so disheartening. But reading this thread has kept me going this week!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/01/2014 08:15

Lucy! How marvellous

heliumheart · 11/01/2014 08:17

Congrats Lucy that's amazing! :)

AthelstaneTheUnready · 11/01/2014 08:25

I started early - the 28th I think. And in that period I have eaten perfectly. I've done something similar before and I know it works.

However, I have also been given no less than seven bottles of wine and one of port since then. I haven't drunk it all, I'm not that bad, but I have had two glasses most nights.

And I'm here to tell you that steady cheating, on a high fat diet, will indeed make you put on weight. I am now 4 lbs heavier than when I started.

As of yesterday then, No More Wine.

ziggiestardust · 11/01/2014 08:52

lucy that's fabulous! Bloody well done!

theunready I've been doing dry January as well with low carbing, just because I found myself wandering out to the kitchen even after a relatively good day and going for a glass of wine (and a handful of crisps!) out of habit Blush I didn't even realise I was doing it!

As I wrote up thread, I've been feeling really down lately (DH working away a lot, new job and new house in the next 3 months, as well as a totally new area) and had an appointment to see the doctor next week. This is probably coincidence, but the back end of this week (when I've been more strict with myself), I've started feeling better. I got a bit down last night, but then I did some colouring in instead and I felt better again. I might have to see how it goes...

ThanksThanksThanks To everyone sharing their recipes, ups and downs. It makes me feel inspired, and also very normal! ThanksThanksThanks

ElBombero · 11/01/2014 09:00

Hi can anyone give me a recipe for cauli cheese?

Plonkysaurus · 11/01/2014 09:04

Lucy that's fantastic!

I'm completely bummed. I know it's a bit irrational but I'm gutted that I've not lost more. Since Monday I've lost 2 lbs, and I know this is a lot for five days, but I'm sad it's not more.

Pre-BC I was eating in a BC light way, and I lost 8 lbs in three weeks then my weightloss stalled. I was really expecting Bootcamp to be a massive kick up the bum.
This is what I ate yesterday:
B - 2 creamy coffees, the rest of my frittata (so roughly 2.5 eggs, 2 mushrooms, a few florets of broccoli, 1/2 a leek, sprinkle of cheese)
S - (didnt have lunch) 1 tin of tuna with mayo, three celery sticks
D - roast chicken leg (+skin), roasted aubergine, courgette, green pepper, 3 cherry toms

Drank lots of water, 3 big cups of chamomile tea and a disgusting starbucks filter coffee that regrettably had ss milk.

I did pick A LOT at the leftover chicken. As in, I ate more skin and both wings, and was very full afterwards. Clearly portion control is an area I need to work on! Anyway, was wondering if anyone has any pointers, or if there might be a reason for my slow loss in comparison to others?

I started at 11st 4 and am now 11st2, I want to lose a stone to get down to my pre-DS weight. I am also going wedding dress shopping in 2 months, so that is my goal time.

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 11/01/2014 09:09

Right- need some advice! Going to parents tonight and there is talk of a takeaway (curry). Obviously will not have rice or bread, but am worried that I'll make rubbish choices. What type of thing can I have which will be the best of a bad bunch?

heliumheart · 11/01/2014 09:10

Plonky - keep going. I think considering how much you have to lose (ie. not much) 2lb is great. I have a lot more than you to lose (4st) and I have also lost 2-3lb since Monday, and before that I wasn't dieting at all. Really - what are the alternatives, give up now or just KEEP ON KEEPING ON? I think eating one chicken leg with skin, plus a couple of wings, is NOT excessive btw. I could easily eat double that...!

heliumheart · 11/01/2014 09:12

Gerry - my favourite for Indian takeaways is to get a tandoori mixed grill (asking if they'll swap any bits you don't like), and eat that together with a veggie side dish (cauliflower/spinach bhaji?) and the salad that comes with it. It's very filling and you don't feel like you're swamped in a sauce with nothing to dip it in.

Gerrythetootallgiraffeswife · 11/01/2014 09:15

Plonky 2lb is great! And that's in 5 days, not a week. So would probably be 8lb over 3 weeks iyswim?

Also, you don't have much to lose, and have been quite good recently anyway. I've lost 8lb this week, but that's from a starting weight of 16lb2oz. 2 months at 2lb a week is 16lb, so you'll be fine for the dress shopping. Be kind to yourself, you're doing well!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 11/01/2014 09:17

Ditto, Ziggy. I'm always surprised (slow learner, me) how much more cheerful I feel when not drinking - a bottle during the week doesn't seem like much, but it would be more accurate of the makers to draw a big sad face on the label, as that's what happens.

Plonky, I also have a stone to go. 2lbs per week will mean you're there in seven weeks. Less than two months!

MrsHughJarse · 11/01/2014 09:17

hi Plonky - complete newby at this - am sure the wise ones will be along in a min - but with only a stone to lose, maybe 2lb is pretty good ? thats a fair percentage of what you want to lose( maths hopeless but sounds about 10%?) - only 12 lbs to go.... sounds quite a good start.? I know it doesn't feel like when you hear 5, 6 or 8 lbs loses - but everyone has a different starting point.

No idea on the food list - am too new myself, can only think the milk may not be for you - it deffo affects me on the scales.

Lets hold our nerve and keep on going - " all for one and one for all" !
x

Gerry We had curry last night, and I had lamb tandoori pieces with green salad and a mushroom veggie thing.

Bloomin lush

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/01/2014 09:23

Plonky Small steps, significant progress.

This is not an instant thing. You are doing so well and 2lbs is great. Don't compare yourself, bodies work differently, some folk have more to lose, others less, yours will function as is right for you.

And it is going good :)

Plonkysaurus · 11/01/2014 09:27

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to cut dairy, possibly just for bootcamp and see if it makes a difference.

Rather sadly the 2lbs I've lost is in addition to the stone I still need to lose!

ChesterDrawers · 11/01/2014 09:31

Another lb off since Thursday bringing me to a total of 7lb since I started on January 1. Am so chuffed.

If I had been on WW or SW I would most definitely have cheated but I have not felt the need or even wanted to since I started.

I am planning on having a few wines tonight, as I think I need to get it out of my system before BC proper starts on Monday. We are supposed to be having a dry January, but I think if I don't have a little bit, it will end up derailing me in the long run. Just hope it doesn't do too much damage.

ChesterDrawers · 11/01/2014 09:36

Sorry, bad juxtaposition with Plonky, didn't mean to sound like I was gloating, just hadn't read the previous messages before posting.

I'm a novice, but from what I have read, a stone is totally doable on this WOE in two months, just stick at it, use the threads for support and you'll be fine.

Plonkysaurus · 11/01/2014 09:42

Don't feel that way Chester, 7lbs off is fantastic! I'd be shouting from the rooftops if I were you.

Support works both ways, we're all here to cheer each other on.

captainmummy · 11/01/2014 09:53

Plonky - weight loss is not linear, and 2lbs is fantastic! That is a sustainable loss, and is not likely to be water/glycogen stores emptying, but actual fat loss. Keep going.
Also BIWI warns of a 3rd week stall -when the water/glycogen is gone and things slow down. If you've been lcing for a few weeks it might be a result of that slowdown.

flucketycluck · 11/01/2014 09:56

I've been lurking for almost the last yr Blush on these threads so finally decided to join Smile
At my lowest weight on 20th Dec I'd lost 5 1/2 stone since July 2012, 1 stone ww (miserable! ) then the rest low carbing.
Managed to put on 10lbs in the Xmas/NY period but have lost 7.5lbs since 2nd Jan getting back on track & doing Dry Jan.
Now around 9lbs from goal.
Onwards & downwards ladies Grin
