'Soft' warm-up approach to next week's Low Carb Bootcamp!

BIWI · 05/01/2014 21:13

Official Bootcamp starts next Monday - here's the sign-up thread

But I know that lots of people want to ease themselves into it.

If you've never low carbed before, it can be quite a good idea to do this, and it can help minimise the chances of getting 'carb flu' - the withdrawal symptoms when you cut down on your carbohydrates.

So if you're interested, this where it starts!

My advice:

  • make sure you've got rid of all your Christmas treats
  • ... as well as other carb-heavy stuff like biscuits, cakes, etc
  • start thinking about the meals that you're going to eat in w/c 13 Jan - write yourself a meal plan (and think about all your meals, including your lunches as well as family meals, etc), and then make sure you write yourself a proper shopping list
  • have a look at hat you're eating on a 'typical' day, and see where you cut down/out on the carbs -breakfast is likely to be your most carb-heavy meal, so think about how you're going to cut the carbs here (clue that will mean ditching toast, cereals, fruit and fruit juice!)
  • if your diet is heavily reliant on pasta and rice-based meals, start thinking now about what you're going to cook instead
  • make sure you are planning meals for the whole family to eat - try as much as possible to make sure that you're all eating the same food, rather than having to cook separate stuff for you - the idea is that this is a WOE - way of eating - and not a diet. So for example, if you're planning on having meat and two veg, plus potatoes - have meat and three veg instead. No-one will die if they don't have potatoes on their plate!
  • look at how much tea/coffee you're drinking; if you drink them white, you will be consuming a lot of carbs in the milk. See if you can cut the number of cups down per day. Try and drink them black or use cream instead of milk
  • think about the fact that you will be starting to eat a high fat diet; if you have anything that's low fat in your fridge/cupboard, get rid of it! Butter, cheese and cream as well as olive oil are all now going to be key parts of your diet
  • similarly, think about all the artificial sweeteners you're eating/drinking and get shot of them. Diet drinks are not allowed on Bootcamp, so cut them down/out as much as you can
  • fruit will not be allowed on Bootcamp (for the first two weeks); if you like to snack on fruit, consider replacing it with veg, e.g. slices of cucumber and peppers

But above all, come and post on here with any of your questions, concerns and suggestions!

Good luck.

Cripes BIWI that thread's annoying. I'm a bit put out at MNHQ's reaction too. Do we all have to sing from the same hymn sheet? Or aren't we allowed to discuss genuine health issues on a thread that will allegedly support 'healthy' eating?

Rawr.

Ilisten2thesoundofdrums · 10/01/2014 17:15

Just popping in to say hello having had a quick read off today's posts.
To whoever it was who said it sounded like we weren't eating much let me reassure you that my plate is heaped. I have been eating enough so I'm full.
List nights belly pork was not great. I will have youtry again as the time taken you cook the meat incinerated the veggies around it. Oops

B yoghurt with lemon essence and linseeds.
L. Scrambled eggs with cream and smoked salmon.
D. Lamb chops with roasted veg and Swede and celeriac.
I am hoping to make cheese sauce for the cauliflower and romanesqe but have no cream left so am hoping Philadelphia might be ok?
Off now to experiment

SteeleyeStan · 10/01/2014 17:19

Face it BIWI and Plonky - we're all mad weirdos doing unspeakable things with faddy diets here. Grin

HumphreyCobbler · 10/01/2014 17:21

Goodness, DH found a photo of me hula hooping at Glastonbury. I was 27 and weighed eight stone! I am wearing a black miniskirt Shock

I have stuck it on the fridge for inspiration Grin although my target weight is a stone more than that.

LauraBridges · 10/01/2014 17:24

You can take it from me that this is the way to eat. Loads of different kinds of people are converging on the wisdom of and science behind high good fat, medium protein and low carb. If people want to disagree that's fine but it is how our ancestors ate for a million years so not likely to be wrong. It is in effect normal eating. I am virtually never ill. It is those plumping themselves up with fake artificial junk food who are the weird eaters.

LauraBridges · 10/01/2014 17:26

Steely s who says doctors are fine but dieticians not - well that might be that the doctors perhaps keep a bit more up to date with changes in science and be more open to new ideas perhaps .

PseudoBadger · 10/01/2014 17:47

Lol - from that NHS Choices page:

"“When people cut out carbs and lose weight, it’s not just carbs they’re cutting out, they’re cutting out the high-calorie ingredients mixed in with it such as butter, cheese, cream, sugar and oil for instance butter on bread, creamy pasta sauce,” says Sian."

Not me Sian (although she doesn't seem to realise that sugar is a carb...)

ChesterDrawers · 10/01/2014 18:01

One of my friends is a dietician and spouts the same drivel. I haven't told her what I am doing but I am pretty certain what her response would be.

Since looking into LC properly, I am astounded that official advice can be so far off the mark in this day and age. In fact, it makes me really cross that I've been following such misguided claptrap on the basis it must be true.

Suzymoo9 · 10/01/2014 18:31

These threads are really helpful and informative - I can't believe the established advice is so wrong. My husband has diabetes and was advised to carry jelly babies around with him in case he had a hypo when he was put (wrongly) on insulin by a specialist diabetic nurse. Since then he sorted himself out via low-carbing and changing medication.

It was him who has been nagging me for over a year to go low-carb but I have only just come round to it after reading Briffa. I thought it would be a lot of effort but am finding it is easier than i thought and lots of ideas from others is so motivational.

I am not needing to snack between meals - unbelievable!

A good day for me (no toast!)
Still having nuts & berries with my yogurt, will have to stop that on Mon - I don't want to be shouted at!!

teaandthorazine · 10/01/2014 18:34

Oh fgs! This kind of misinformation would be funny if it wasn't, y'know, making people fat and sick. I'd love to see Sian's face when I eat coconut oil (waaaaah, saturated fats!!) straight off the spoon, though...

CrabbyWinterBottom · 10/01/2014 18:43

Chipping I weighed myself a few weeks before Christmas, having been only a bit of a carby twat for the month or so before, and was Smile to see that I’d only put on 4lbs. I really did give myself carte blanche to eat every forbidden crappy pile of sugary fatty rubbish that came my way over crimbo though, so I don’t think it’s going to be great this time. I’ve even caught myself thinking ‘well that’s all the better for seeing a big dramatic loss the first couple of weeks then!’ Hmm Grin

Oh Rup Sad hope it feels better soon.

Eva olive oil is monounsaturated, rather than polyunsaturated.

Bewitched...
OK questions, do I have to eat if I'm not hungry
No.
why is it bad to pee more (re the herbal teas)
It's not bad to pee more, in fact it's good for your kidneys to flush them through, it's just that it's very important to stay hydrated on this way of eating, and if you've taken a diuretic then it's good to bear in mind (you'll notice anyway!) that you're excreting a greater volume of water and that you might need to drink a bit extra to make up for it, iyswim.
am I supposed to be constipated on day 3/4 blush.
Drink drink drink the water! I can find I get a bit constipated low carbing. I use flaxseed (linseed) as a very gentle bulk laxative. Very important to have lots of water with it.
And, if I don't actually want to lose much weight - half a stone - am I barking up the wrong lettuce. I just want to lose the tum and a bit off the thighs. So I can wear a something surprising as mum of bride in May.
I find that my tum disappears the most of all on this way of eating - bread and pasta really give me a tummy, and last year people were commenting on how slim my waist looked when I was low carbing. Congratulations on your daughter's wedding! Flowers

Ilisten here's how I do pork belly. It's one of my favourite roasts!

CrabbyWinterBottom · 10/01/2014 18:47

I'm properly revving up for Monday now. I'm all ready for the brand new me! Grin

Made a shallot and blue/goats cheese tart today on an almond pastry base, to ease back towards the low carbing. Am having butternut squash bake tonight though, just cos I love it, and will have to finish off the chocolate truffle mixture I made last night (just 70% choc, double cream, butter and a splash of port). Shock

MrsHughJarse · 10/01/2014 19:32

Anyone logged in at the min? Just staring vaguely at a bag of spinach and hopping it will tell me how to cook it ! I have planned spinach on bed spinach with hollandiase - do I just shove in a saucepan with butter ??.. Any gurus out thereWink

MrsHughJarse · 10/01/2014 19:32

Hoping, not hopping !

encyclogirl · 10/01/2014 19:38

Roast chicken and creamy kale for dinner. Dh and ds13 practically licked the plate! Dd17 just asked for pasta lol. She has SN and lots of sensory issues around food, so I didn't push it.

Really full and satisfied now :)

PseudoBadger · 10/01/2014 19:47

Fry it with butter MrsHugh and then season?

MrsHughJarse · 10/01/2014 19:55

Thanks Badger ..... It's looks like a picture on the good food website :-) I'm diving in .....

ziggiestardust · 10/01/2014 20:18

Would anyone mind critiquing my intake today? I'm taking it one day at a time, right back to basics;

B: 1 small pot ff plain yoghurt
Snack: 2 babybels
L: 2 skin on chicken breasts chopped over a salad with ranch dressing and bacon.
Snack: ff latte
D: scrambled eggs in butter with bacon, mushrooms fried in garlic butter and 1/2 tsp encona hot sauce.
Snack: hogbites pork scratchings, chunk of cheddar

Drinks: 4 pints water, 5 cups strong tea with dash semi skimmed milk, 1 can diet coke.

Okay. Hit me with the improvements. Thanks

ziggiestardust · 10/01/2014 20:20

encyclogirl how did you do the creamy kale? I have a big pack in the fridge Grin

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 10/01/2014 20:26

Ziggie- I'm new at this so I'm not going to put my money where my mouth is, I'm sure someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

I've had a bad day today; lots of dairy and got caught out by some dessicated coconut and paneer, which were much more carby than I thought.

B: total yog with orange essence and ground vanilla
L: 2 black farmer chipolatas and celeriac boulangere
D: paneer and coconut masala and cauliflower rice
S: salami and marinated artichokes
Three coffees with cream- decaf

ziggiestardust · 10/01/2014 20:32

Oh no, I've eaten way too much dairy then! Yoghurt, cheese, milk in tea and a latte Sad

And now I've written it down, I've eaten LOADS SadSad

heliumheart · 10/01/2014 20:33

I'm a lapsed 'expert' ziggie but I would say watch your milk. A whole latte and 5 teas, you'd be surprised how much milk that is. I have been drinking my tea with milk this week and then yesterday measured how much I put in to make it how I like it (which is strong and not very milky!) and it was 50ml each time. I think s/s milk is 5g carbs per 100ml, so 5 cups of tea could be 25g carbs right there.

Other than that I reckon you haven't done too badly!

I felt like crap today, don't know if it was carb flu, but was just utterly exhausted, I could hardly keep my eyes open this afternoon.

Today I've had:

Breakfast - leftover beef bourgignonne
Lunch - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon
Dinner - steak and cheese/leeks
Drinks - 2 x coffee with cream and 1/3tsp sugar Wink

Think wine is on the menu tonight, although am so shattered I'll be in bed soon!

heliumheart · 10/01/2014 20:34

SarahBeeny - what is the orange essence like? Can you recommend a brand?

DurhamDurham · 10/01/2014 20:41

I think I have done better today.
B- black coffee, scrambled eggs with tomatoes.
L-avocado, anchovies, Parmesan cheese, red onions
D-beef and onions cooked in slow cooker, mashed celeriac, cheesy leeks, followed by some Greek yoghurt.

Lots of water. So what's the verdict? Grin

ziggiestardust · 10/01/2014 20:42

Ok, I'll defiantly cut down on the tea then, I put about 1tbsp in each time; I don't know how much that is in ml. But then, it wouldn't do me harm to switch to black coffee, which I also enjoy.

Am I allowed a full fat latte in coffee shops, or should I just stick to black coffee there too?
