The ten worst pieces of diet advice ever

Saw this article linked by a nutritionist I follow on facebook.

Number 1 on their list is "Avoid Carbs"
The reason they give for this being the worst diet advice is "eating too few carbohydrates can starve the muscles for long periods of time and reduce metabolic rate, so the body becomes less effective at burning energy."

Just wondering if anyone knows if there is any scientific evidence backing this up? Is it specifically referring to low carb with no veg?

Thanks :)

Total bollocks! The body has NO requirement for ingested carbohydrate at all!

It is not "essential" in the way some proteins are (it's essential to eat them as the body can't make them).

I'm not saying you shouldn't eat ANY carbs, of course veggies, all of which are "carbs" really, are full of nutrients, but you don't actually need the carbs as the body can manufacture sugars from the components of fat and protein.

You would literally die without protein in your diet, you would die without fat... But you won't die from lack of carb!

That is very interesting Raw and exactly what my friend/neighbour tells me. He is a Dr himself and has lost alot of weight by low carbing. He is extremely fit (long distance runner) too. He is evangelical about it. I am now doing it myself and am fascinated to see if/how it works for me.

Thanks for the info. I have been eating low carbs and am loving it. Feel like I am actually eating "normally" for the first time ever!

Well that's the thing Anchovies, you are "eating normally", or at least some approximation of the normal diet we evolved eating.

What we are told is a healthy, normal diet (the SAD diet {standard American/awful diet}) bears little relation to a normal wild human diet! And I think the SAD diet has got very significantly worse in the past 30 or so years, for a variety of reasons.

However, I think the majority of the population are just not ready to believe that bread etc is not the "staff of life" but the "crutch of doom"!
