Stalling after a week?

MrsNoodleHead · 24/07/2013 09:57

I started LC-ing a week last Sunday and in the first week dropped 4lbs, from 9st 6 to 9st 2. I know I'm probably being impatient but since Saturday there's been no movement.

I'm also feeling ravenous - to the point of being a bit wobbly and lacking in concentration - but I think I'm eating quite a lot. This was my day yesterday:

B: total yoghurt with sprinkling of granola
L: itsu low carb smoked chicken salad with boiled egg, itsu small box of sushi (so some rice)
D: steak and mushrooms fried in butter, bearnaise sauce, salad
S: 6 baby bel, edamame beans

I know there are still some carbs in there - too many? Why am I so hungry?

Bumping becuase I'M HUNGRY and my willpower is dwindling!

Did I mention that I'm hungry?

I think you are feeling ravenous because you are including carbs: Granola (usually covered in additional sugar) & rice. So everytime you eat, your blood sugars will spike. To deal with the spike, your body will release insulin which will trough your blood sugar. The "troughing" will cause you to be ravenous.

Also, are you drinking enough water?

what else are you drinking - anything other than water will have sugar in it (or aspartamine) which will have the same effect on your blood sugar and insulin response.

I am on about week 2 also and have realised I will have to watch portion control too. However, I have noticed I am not that hungry at a meal anymore - now happy with half a steak etc. Hopefully that will kickstart some more weight loss.

Thanks for replying.

I would love some chocolatebiscuitcake (or any of the above)!

I've checked and my sushi yesterday had 26g of carbs, and according to t'interweb 2tbs of granola has around 10g carbs. The chicken salad had 7.2g of carbs. That's it for the day, so not a heeuge amount?

I nearly broke when choosing lunch today but restrained myself and had the chicken salad again, but with sashimi (8g carbs) so better.

I don't think I can go much lower carbs-wise, it's too hard!

Also have my period - could that be making a difference?

Oh and I'm drinking masses of water. Only other thing was 1 cup of tea yesterday.

Me again.

Ironically I was eating more carbs last week when losing weight (eg toast for breakfast, the odd sweet treat) and felt sated. It's only now that I've tried to go hardcore (well, for me) that I'm struggling.

Hi mrsnoodle

Well done on your 4lb loss!

stalls are really common on this WOE, so don't despair. I can go ten to fourteen days with no movement on the scales, then I'll drop 5lb in two days. Have you measured yourself? You can lose inches before you lose pounds.

However... you really, really, really CANNOT sneak in any carbs, else you will come totally unstuck. So, no more sushi, no more granola. It's still early days, so your appetite is probably still adjusting. If you're hungry, have a small piece of cheese or a handful of nuts. You'll soon find that you're naturally eating less as your appetite adjusts. Also, make sure you're eating enough fat.

I am wondering how much you have to lose, though, if you're just over 9st (I would love to be just over 9st btw!), cause if you haven't an awful lot to lose, then it will come off more slowly.

Hth
Good luck!

MrsRachelLynde · 24/07/2013 15:29

Oh yes and your period will affect water retention levels as well so try to wait until it's finished before you weigh.

BIWI · 24/07/2013 15:34

MrsNoodle - you are eating way too many carbs!

I started LC-ing a week last Sunday and in the first week dropped 4lbs, from 9st 6 to 9st 2. I know I'm probably being impatient but since Saturday there's been no movement.

That's brilliant! You aren't very overweight, so you're not suddenly going to drop a stone in a week. And you are being impatient. Weight loss isn't linear, and some days your weight will go up. If you can't accept daily fluctuations, then you need to step away from the scales and weigh only weekly

I'm also feeling ravenous - to the point of being a bit wobbly and lacking in concentration - but I think I'm eating quite a lot. This was my day yesterday:

If you're ravenous, despite eating a lot, this signals that you aren't eating enough fat and you may be eating too many carbs.

B: total yoghurt with sprinkling of granola

Was it full fat yoghurt? And granola is way too carby for a low carb diet, especially if you are already worried about the slow rate of loss!

L: itsu low carb smoked chicken salad with boiled egg, itsu small box of sushi (so some rice)

Rice?! Again - too carby. How many carbs in the salad dressing - did you check? Processed foods often use sugar in their dressings.

D: steak and mushrooms fried in butter, bearnaise sauce, salad

Lovely - a good low carb meal. But - was it homemade bearnaise? If not, did you check the carbs in it? Again, bottled/jarred sauces often have added sugar

S: 6 baby bel, edamame beans

Beans are also too high in carbs for a low carb diet.

I know there are still some carbs in there - too many? Why am I so hungry?

Not just 'some' carbs, but too many carbs.

BIWI · 24/07/2013 15:35

Oh, and your period will make a difference - often people have water retention. You say you're drinking loads of water - how much?

Have you had a look at the Bootcamp threads to see what other low carbers are eating? Lots of help and support over there.

MrsNoodleHead · 25/07/2013 22:05

Sorry for not acknowledging your help until now but I really do appreciate the fantastically tailored service, BIWI and MrsRachel!!

In fact when I weighed in this morning I had dropped another 2lbs, but I'm going to try to be better with carbs anyway. Duly noted that actually the grams have been adding up; I think because I don't have much to lose, I've not been taking it seriously enough - but then I can't have my cake and eat it, and complain that the weight isn't coming off fast enough!

Kudos to the long termers, though. I'm finding it really really difficult to find the right food for breakfast and lunch (at work, so I can't make my own food but choose from the usual chains). I've tried today though:

B: buttery scrambled eggs, cheese and smoked salmon
L: didn't get a chance to eat at work
S: 2 x babybel, chicken pieces with sour cream dip
D: roast duck leg, salad

...but I fear that in 7lbs' time I won't have the willpower to adopt this WOE.

Thanks for all the help,

MrsNH

It's hard when you're on the go to accommodate this WOE, so you have my every sympathy. I work from home, so it's much easier for me.

The best thing would be to take your own lunch in to work.

Or - do you have an M&S Food near you? You can pick up lots of low carb stuff there quite easily.

When you reach your target, as long as you don't go mad you will be able to increase your carbs - but you need to be careful. If you just return to the level of carbs you were eating before, you do risk putting the weight back on.
