Morning all.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for its final outing

I hope that this has been a good Bootcamp for you all - it's been fairly quiet and peaceful this time around! Never sure if that's a good thing or not, but at least we haven't had any public flouncing!

I know that not everyone joined us in week one, and @AlmaHart has only just started (!) but don't worry - we'll keep this thread going for general chat and ongoing support.

There are also a couple of extra columns on the spreadsheet too.

Thank you for everyone who has posted and supported - and special thanks to @Finallyhere for womanning the spreadsheet

Morning,
Thanks for the welcome @Baystard it’s so good to see some familiar names KOKOing!

FinallyHere · 19/05/2023 07:54

Me too, well, three 😁 KOKO-ing

Welcome back @NotDonna

NotDonna · 19/05/2023 11:47

I’ve never measured my waist. Had no idea what it’d be. 36 inches this morning. Sounds a lot when I recall some ideal being bandied about as 36-24-36 and especially when considering my bra size is smaller. I am a square! Albeit I’ve also no idea where exactly my waist is so went over the belly button so at least I’ll have a landmark for next time. 🤣🤣
Have just made a chilli this morning that I’ll probs have with buttery cabbage for lunch and again for dinner. I was thinking we’d have a bbq but quite fancy going to tennis tonight so chilli will be easier. I’ve not been to ‘Fri night tennis’ before as I suspect everyone is pretty good and I’m pretty dire - very much still learning. I could do with an equally dire friend to come with me.

colouringindoors · 24/05/2023 08:58

yippee 1 Stone down since I started 5 weeks ago! 😁😁😁 1 more stone to go and I'll be the lightest I've been for nearly a decade.

FinallyHere · 24/05/2023 23:06

@colouringindoors such a great feeling 😀

@NotDonna if you are looking for duff tennis partners, then I am definitely the person you are seeking 😁

I would be happy to join your Friday evening tennis. I used to play in the early 1990's ... that is a long time ago.

NotDonna · 25/05/2023 08:44

@FinallyHere I bottled the tennis.

And I’ve been shocking on the food and wine front too. Really must get a grip! Zero ounces lost. It’s the 3/4pm sugar thing. Grrrr.
Im taking my youngest DD (14) to Paris for a few days for her birthday today and just know that Low Carb will not be easy. I’ll obviously try. It’s made trickier as some of you know that she’s really low weight so I need to push the patisseries etc and keep her eating frequently.

agnesmartin · 25/05/2023 09:11

I've been on a few of the bootcamps and had some success. Not great at KOKOing so I'll probably be back on this thread soon for support but I thought I'd post about a book that you may have seen publicised recently. It's not about low carb but it is very much about ultra-processed food (UPF) which this WOE helps to greatly reduce or eliminate.

It's called Ultra-Processed People by Chris van Tulleken. I'm quite into healthy eating and felt that I knew a fair amount about UPF but there's so much that I didn't. I'm also (pretty) comfortable that he has done his research as I know a decent amount about one of the topics he covers and he read some relatively obscure but very well regarded writings on the topic. It is a really important if absolutely infuriating read and definitely supports the boot camp line on reducing processed foods and sweeteners etc.

Won't do your blood pressure any good reading it, we've basically been manipulated to help big business monetise their waste products and make a healthy profit at the expense of our health.

It has meant that I haven't touched a supermarket made biscuit or drunk any Diet Coke since reading it though ...

... but have also discovered that even my shop bought mayonnaise contains some bacterial slime (xanthan gum) so going to have to start making my own once this jar is finished.

He also discusses the inequalities about which parts of society eat the most processed foods - those that lack money and time, no surprise there. In fact on the reasons that UPFs were developed were so that workers needed shorter lunch breaks - no need for an hour or two so they can go home and get a cooked meal when they can have a pre-packaged sandwich at their desk.

agnesmartin · 25/05/2023 09:17

And just wanted to say a huge thank you to @BIWI for all the past bootcamps and big stick waving. 🙏🏼

There are so many old support threads on here, there's really no excuse for me not to get my big girl pants on and give it another go, is there?! 😉 Especially now that supermarket biscuits have no hold over me ...

FinallyHere · 25/05/2023 11:54

Thank you for that ref to Ultra-Processed People by Chris van Tulleken @agnesmartin It was mentioned, and praised, by Tim Spectre of the Zoe project, so very much recognise the 'in tune with bootcamp' message about UPF.

id love to know whether there any mention in it of John Yudkin, who published pure, white & deadly in 1972, just at the time that the food manufacturing businesses were getting going? His (Yudkin's) message was discredited, actually his career was destroyed by the 'other side' who advocated the low fat, high carb message who turned out to be, colour me surprised, funded by the food manufacturers. Pure, White and Deadly strap line is the 'The new facts about the sugar you eat as a cause of heart disease, diabetes and other killers'

Lots of background on their differing approaches which continues to play out in the media.

I read it at Uni in the late '70s, when dieting was a near universal obsession. I had always been slim when living at home, put on weight at school and lost it again at Uni. The low fat message was everywhere, including in my mothers approach. I'm just so grateful to BIWI et al for the Bootcamp approach, which i have finally put into practice in my 70th decade, and really, really works for me.

Appreciate I could buy a copy myself to find out, but i have bought so.many.books which, unlike bootcamp, i was unable to put into practice long term. I have a paperback from the '70s, and a kindle version published in the '80s ....

Its tough, isn't it @NotDonna when others are eating things that you are avoiding, never mind having to encourage them to eat more.

Wish you well for your own health and wellbeing

agnesmartin · 25/05/2023 13:22

@FinallyHere I did a quick search and couldn't see a reference to him or the book. But one of the things that makes the book for me is that he uses his research background to point out which academic papers are rigorous, those where there might be innocent mistakes and those which are influenced to a greater or lesser extent by funding. So he might refer to some of the research that Yudkin used for the book.

FinallyHere · 25/05/2023 13:23

to point out which academic papers are rigorous

Thank you @agnesmartin that does sound worth reading. Shall get a kindle version 😁

Baystard · 27/05/2023 17:14

Have bought the Christ van T book, thanks for the recommendation @agnesmartin

Got on scales after a while of KOKO but without real expectations as I've been losing inches rather than weight for ages now (not complaining). Another 4-5 lb loss since April. Shock

Possibly it doesn't sound like a lot over a month but it takes me down to 9st 7lb, a weight I don't think I've seen since I was in my teens which was a long time ago.

Huge celebratory steak tonight with salad and chimichurri, and I splurged on nice cheese today too Grin.

OldandTired66 · 03/06/2023 11:24

Just back from a trip to America so wasn't expecting much on my end of month weigh-in but amazed to find I lost a kg bringing total loss since mid Jan to 19lbs and now hovering just over the 200lb mark. Also NSV; not overflowing my airplane seat was so pleasing. More or less stuck to plan in US as staying with family so main meals mostly under my control. Did indulge in pancakes for breakfast a couple of times, tortilla chips and biscuits american style (scones, delicious). Don't like american chocolate so that was easy to resist. Did get into a daily beer habit though, but stopped at one or two. Such a boost to realise I can go on holiday and not lose the plot, unlike any other holiday I've ever been on.

FinallyHere · 03/06/2023 15:09

Such a boost to realise I can go on holiday and not lose the plot

@OldandTired66

This is one of my favourite things about low carb bootcamping.

I used to use holidays and days out to overindulge and just accepted how sh*t I felt as a result.

Enjoying the good and feeling good about my choices, by sticking more or less to plan (typically doing bootcamp lite) life was transformational for me.

Enjoy holidays so.much.more

newtowelsplease · 05/06/2023 09:43

I've jumped back on the bootcamp wagon this morning after about a year off and wandered in here to see if I happened to be timing it right for an actual bootcamp.

Thank you @BIWI, I've bootcamped many times under different usernames and I've always been amazed at the selflessness of your input. I completely understand your reasons for stepping back from Mumsnet, they have been a real disappointment to me too.

Well I've had my egg-in-a-cup and 2 pints of water so I'm on my way, going to try to make this the last time I have to break that sugar dependence as I feel so much better when I can get past it. Happy Monday all Smile

NotDonna · 05/06/2023 16:38

That sugar dependence! I’ve still to conquer that beast. KOKO!
Well done on the holiday @OldandTired66

Vibing · 05/06/2023 17:08

Joining for moral support. Day 1 and craving crisps. Had a dioralyte and water instead.

NotDonna · 05/06/2023 17:34

Ugh! I’ve just eaten a blooming kitkat I found lurking in the freezer! Totally mindlessly too! Grrrr!

ditavonteesed · 06/06/2023 07:07

Testing if I can post before I write out a lengthy post and lose it

ditavonteesed · 06/06/2023 07:16

Yay it would appear I can now post again, do know why but I haven't been able to post for ages.
I need to jump back on the wagon as I have totally lost my way with eating altogether. I've had a weird few months, my underactive thyroid flipped itself and became over active. I was not hungry, losing weight and having to exercise constantly to control the wired feeling. Anyway I just ate whatever I fancied as I didn't really fancy much at all and I was trying to stop the weight coming off. I fell very quickly into unhealthy habits, why do we fancy junk when we feel like this rather than veg. I decided I wouldn't low carb anymore but I literally have no idea how to eat healthily without low carb. Plus I'm bloated, so bloated.
A couple of weeks ago I managed to get my weight to stabilise so I presume my thyroid is sort of behaving again and now the weight is slowly creeping back on despite still doing an alarming amount of exercise.
Anyway sorry for the essay, I have decided I need to get back on it, I'm trying to get fit, decided I'm doing a half marathon next year and lifting lots, I want to be strong. I won't be fit and strong eating crap.

So today it starts, if weight starts coming off I'll have to rethink but for now I'm going to give it a go as I'm bored of being bloated.

Breakfast eggs on low carb bread
Lunch/dinner garlic prawns with tomato and mozerella salad.
Snacks baby bels and chorizo.

FinallyHere · 06/06/2023 07:55

Glad to see you can post again @ditavonteesed

StuntNun · 06/06/2023 13:58

I was the same for a while @ditavonteesed I ended up having to delete the app and reinstall it to be able to reply to messages again. I hope your thyroid will be behaving itself henceforth!

Not gonna ask why you had a KitKat in the freezer @NotDonna but I wouldn't have been able to resist it either. I have to only buy unappealing (to me) snacks for my kids as I have zero willpower when I'm stressed out.

How are you getting on today @Vibing it's common to crave carby stuff at first as your body is used to carbs as an immediate source of fuel. It's the reason why we say three meals plus snacks at first. It's much easier to resist the impulse to eat carbs when you're already full.

No new Bootcamp on its way @newtowelsplease but there will be plenty of support here if needed.

Baystard · 06/06/2023 19:58

Still here, still more-or-less KOKoing (other than a dreadful day today) but I need to drop the bread, even if it is healthy homemade brown bread. I've noticed my intake creeping up and my inclination to have nuts or cheese instead creeping down. I'm sure it's connected.

SummerSazz · 06/06/2023 23:17

I'm here in the background 😄

Seriously need to lose 1/2 stone (if not more) as I go on holiday in 3.5 weeks and then end of July doing a 4 day mountain trek I seem to have signed myself up for 🤪. So need to get fitter too.

Been LC for about 2.5 months and no alcohol for the last 3.5 weeks or so (needed a weight loss boost!) and lost 12lbs. However I'm going on a 3 day conference tomorrow so could all go horribly wrong!

I know how and what I need to do but......

Nice to 'see' a few people back on here.
