Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - Week 2 - how did you get on?!

BIWI · 15/01/2023 23:00

Evening all! I'm posting the week 2 chat thread this evening, as I know how keen everyone will be to post tomorrow. As I'm retired now, I no longer have to set an alarm to wake up, so I don't want to keep everyone waiting tomorrow morning to post.

I love this week. It's when we see how much people have lost, and it can be a significant amount. It can be a real leap of faith for anyone who hasn't low carbed before, and all those who really don't believe you can eat that much fat and still lose weight!

I'm really hoping that you've all had a good first week, and that your commitment 'to the cause' has been rewarded with a good result - be that on the scales, with your tape measure, or the currently-too-tight clothes that you've been trying on.

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

I hope very much that you've had a good first week, and that you're feeling supermotivated for the rest of Bootcamp.

However - if you haven't lost, or you have even gained, please don't be downhearted. We're all different, and there may be lots of reasons why this is the case for you. It's also really important to note that it's not a competition. We all lose at different rates - plus, anyone who is bigger will lose more/faster than someone who is smaller.

Hopefully there are other benefits to this WOE that will keep you on track - at the very least, I hope that you have been enjoying the food, and that you don't feel deprived, like you would be on a low calorie/fat diet.

That does look great @StuntNun. I had my fried eggs with mixed veg again today for the third time in a row and that's definitely enough for a good while.

Tomorrow is monthly shopping day so I can stock up properly to have plenty of options for lunches, and our veg delivery comes on Tuesday after a long break over Christmas. Can't wait to have a bit more variety!

FinallyHere · 19/01/2023 13:30

@TangledWebOfDeception

write a long, long comment with everything in it, I almost inevitably lose it

I hear you, it's so frustrating.

What I tend to do, is to write my answers in something else, like an email or 'note' on my phone , usually word if I'm on my laptop and then when it's done copy and paste into the MN thread. A bit of a pfaff but...

venusandmars · 19/01/2023 13:33

@BIWI I am usually well prepared with excuses for such eventualities. The don't have a sweet tooth / don't eat sugar / just eaten a big breakfast getting me though many social visits where biscuits are offered.

But yes, please come and deal with dh. He has been walking around looking sorrowful and self-pitying and saying "I never know what I can eat from the fridge or what you've got plans for". Poor lamb!

Savedmybacon · 19/01/2023 13:53

@tangledwebofdeception another undiagnosed ADHDer (on the waiting list for assessment) hence my impatience after the big drop in weight in my carnivore first week and I hear you too! Never normally post on things like this as my brain can't keep up and I don't feel part of the gang but I'm finding everyone's posts so helpful, so thank you all, especially @BIWI ☺️

BIWI · 19/01/2023 14:04

You're definitely part of the gang @Savedmybacon!

First day I've felt peckish between meals. I think I'm unconsciously falling back into my old low fat habits so upping the cheese rations. Also going out tonight, first night out since Christmas and into alcohol temptation zone.
B: boiled egg with butter and cheese
L: Soup (butternut squash and coconut), 2 chicken thighs
D: Pork steaks, mashed swede, buttery veg and gravy
Snacked on extra cheese and another chicken thigh already.
Can recommend Tescos steamer packs of cauliflower rice. Very convenient and quick to cook, no 'school dinner' cabbagy smell. Stays firm and not soggy. I microwave then toss in butter and pepper. Probably most expensive way to buy cauliflower though!

AllTheBlackCoffee · 19/01/2023 14:10

My eggs were happy at lunchtime. Little did they know their fate —into an inside out omelette— Yum!

Strike through fail!!

JustAPony · 19/01/2023 14:12

@venusandmars Butter chicken is one of my faves so you might be into something there. I might freeze the monkfish til next week and make that! Genius!

venusandmars · 19/01/2023 14:22

@OldandTired66 I think butternut squash is a bit on the carby side (7.4g per 100g). If you can get pumpkin it works as well in soups etc and is only 2.3g per 100g. I notice that it doesn't taste so sweet (unsurprisingly) and my dgc like roast butternut squash but not so keen on pumpkin...

OldandTired66 · 19/01/2023 15:06

@venusandmars Yikes, hadn't noticed that, though probably not too bad per portion as lots of other veg in there too. Will check and switch to a lower carb soup or give it a rest for a couple of weeks and focus on higher fat and protein lunches.

BIWI · 19/01/2023 15:07

@OldandTired66 venusandmars is right - that soup sounds very carby - is it a ready made one, or did you make it yourself?

If you're already cutting down your fat, and also upping your carbs, then this will not only mean you're getting hungry between meals, but you risk impeding any weight loss

Please make sure you're checking the carb count of things on packets/tins. Check out the veg carb count on the spreadsheet as well, as that will show you which veg you need to avoid - butternut squash is in the red zone.

Also, just because there's lots of other veg in there, it doesn't mean it's low carb - in fact, it could be making it pretty high carb!

Just came across this Zoe podcast, about how exercise can help to control blood sugar

Here

Worth a listen (or a read of the transcript, whichever you prefer)

Jenasaurus · 19/01/2023 15:51

Sorry its 48, picture is too large lol

mimosa1 · 19/01/2023 15:53

Thanks @Biwi - really interesting and another reason to get back to exercise. I loathe it but need to find something that works for me as I'm getting puffed out going up stairs these days, and that can't be good.

@venusandmars you sound like a wonderful friend and that you made some good choices under tge circumstances.

WFH tomorrow so will have some more food options. Will be making shakshuka inspired by a PP. Yum.

BIWI · 19/01/2023 16:08

@mimosa1 just going out for a 30 minute walk would count though!

I saw this film on Youtube recently which accords with my own thinking Fat Fiction.

Brassbumblebee · 19/01/2023 17:58

Just caught up with the thread, I had typed out a big message that I then lost so I'm doing what a pp suggested and typing this in my phone notes then pasting it to the thread! 😅

Thank you for all the kind words regarding me not drinking, I appreciate it 😊

I had a good sleep last night and woke up this morning feeling thinner than when I went to bed, like around my ribs feels smaller! I think I've been pretty good this week (I know we're only just over half way...) so hopefully see a decent loss on monday before moving onto bootcamp lite.

I had made a big batch of coleslaw to take to work tomorrow and Saturday, making some pork burgers to go with it so looking forward to that.

I'm getting in the mood for a curry, I think I'll make this one on Monday and will have plenty for during the week: www.foodandwine.com/recipes/slow-cooker-coconut-pork-curry

Today's menu;

B: 10% yogurt

L: mushrooms stuffed with garlic, cream cheese and parmesan. Some ham.
D: chicken wings and a huge pile of buttery kale.

Rayna37 · 19/01/2023 18:24

Sounding the next stone bracket down klaxon toot toot if that makes any sense grammatically just need to stick over a tricky weekend. The Chinese is a big old school place, cash only no website, but think I'll aim for something black bean or lettuce wraps.

B: courgette and cheese omelette
L: leftover feta and chargrilled veg
D: another new recipe inspired by my Oddbox book! Celeriac and pancetta croquettes with lots of kale. Recipe needs tweaking but was pretty good.

Perhaps a day where I don't eat cheese at every meal might be an idea?!

DryWhiteagainW · 19/01/2023 18:36

Right I’ve caught up and mad notes on a post it!!! FinallyHere your cut and paste tip is excellent!

ive also consulted the acronym list so I can understand you all, but what is EVOO? My fav is FLGV.

ThistlyPerf thank you for the pesto recipe

BIWI I agree I am prob guilty of not having enough fat in my diet, just struggling to get my head round that one. I am however enjoying being allowed home made vinaigrette -French heritage makes salad impossible to eat without-

B. Smoked salmon, 2 egg omelette
L. Brocoli and roast chicken (I know, no fat!!!
D. I’m braising kale with bacon and butter to go with celeriac mash and salmon. I’ll let you know how that tastes, love kale.

DryWhiteagainW · 19/01/2023 18:37

Damn, how do you strike through again?

TangledWebOfDeception · 19/01/2023 18:38

@DryWhiteagainW Extra Virgin Olive Oil

DryWhiteagainW · 19/01/2023 18:39

Oh and Venus my DH does the same, complains that he can’t eat anything in the fridge. I’ve even started putting post it’s on food because it disappears and drives me nuts.
