Welcome everyone! We have over 160 people signed up this time, so things are going to move quickly.

Here's the link to The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness which has been carefully and lovingly curated by the very lovely @FinallyHere

There are a few bits of admin that I need to post before we get going. The first of which is the usual disclaimer:

I am not a medic, a scientist, a dietician or a nutritionist. Everything that I post here is based on my reading and my own experiences of low carbing gained over the last 20 years. You follow the guidance here at your own risk - although I very much hope that there are no risks!

Very importantly, though, if you are on any kind of long-term medication, please talk to your GP/nurse about low carbing. This is especially important if you're on drugs for hypertension, cholesterol and/or diabetes, as a low carb diet should have a positive impact on all of those conditions, which would mean that your dosage may need to be decreased, if not removed altogether.

The second is about etiquette:

Please, please, please read all the posts on the thread before you make your own post. These threads work so much better when we're all here interacting with each other, as that means we can offer help and support when it's needed. Don't just jump on the thread to plop down your meals for the day, your weight that day and then just fuck off. That doesn't help anyone.

More than anything else, it's incredibly irritating when someone posts a question which has already been answered early in the thread. I, and lots of other Bootcampers, spend a considerable amount of time responding to people's questions and concerns, and it's pretty insulting when it's obvious that these haven't been read.

(Oh, and it's very obvious if you haven't read the thread, so take that as a warning Wink)

@Mercedesbenz2022 Yes the spice mixes can be sugary. Someone upthread mentioned taco/fajita mix and they can be carby too.

I like the pinch of nom spice blend recipes (about the only useful thing from doing SW) we like the Greek one mixed into Greek yoghurt for marinading chicken.

Star* I*nspiration has struck Star

I think we need a yogurt thread in the bootcamp area, photos front and back to show what you're looking for and what the nutritional content is! I will start ...

Sad, but honestly I could have suggested a spreadsheet so it could be worse Grin

Another day under the (hopefully loosening) belt.

Water - on my last glass now. I find once you get into the habit it's easy to sip all day.

B: boiled egg with garlic Mayo
L: celery and pate
D: beef chilli with mushrooms shallots and green peppers. Massive portion of home made guacamole on the side. Probably ate more than I needed to, as on the wrong side of comfortably full if I am honest. Need to watch that!

Feeling rather tired so will probably go to bed soon and watch something on my iPad. Anyone else feeling tired? Not sure if it's because I'm coming off the back of a viral infection or the switch to low carb.

On the plus side - morning weigh in showing just under 2lb weight loss.

Find your full fat yogurt soul mate here http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/lowcarbb_bootcamp/4718643-find-your-full-fat-yogurt-soul-mate-here

Stokey · 12/01/2023 19:38

Will be heading over to the yoghurt thread soon @Rayna37 . I tend to have posh yoghurt - M&S or Waitrose - but tried Lidl a few weeks ago and it was yummy.

I haven't felt like snacking today but am still craving chocolate after a meal. It's not because I'm hungry, it's just taste. Am having a liquorice tea instead.

A friend has just said he's in town for the evening tomorrow and wants to go for dinner. I've booked somewhere that has lots of meat and fish options, and figure I can avoid the fries. He's a big drinker though and I'm considering having one glass of white. DH may take one for the team and drink on my behalf.

B: Greek yoghurt and cream
L: Scrambled eggs with cream, spinach & bacon
D: Tuna steaks with loads of veg - cabbage, courgette, shallot, green beans and broccoli

prettybird · 12/01/2023 19:59

The challenge with the Lidl Authentic Greek yoghurt is that they mix No-fat, Low Fat and Full Fat yoghurts on the same tray AngryConfused

So make sure to find a tub with a lid with dark blue writing on the lid and not the ones with light blue or pink writing (not sure which is which but one is low fat and the other is zero fat).

Speaking from experience Blush the lower fat ones are not as nice and I ended up throwing it out Hmm

Jenasaurus · 12/01/2023 20:08

Well I didnt have to worry about how to cook the chicken, someone has scoffed them both!!! So instead I had 2 fried eggs, some grilled tomatoes, and a whole bag of sprouts topped with a little grated cheese. Feel quite full actually.

I have one thing though which I don't know if its connected to the eating or not, I nearly passed out when I got out of the bath on 2 occasions this week. Luckily I grabbed the basin and steadied myself but I felt dizzy and really week. I do love a hot bath, especially since my Diabetes Nurse told me it lowers blood sugar, apparently an hour in the bath is as effective as an hours walking in getting your blood glucose down, I tested this with my glucose meter and it went from 7 to 4 from before and after my bath. It may be worth me having warm as opposed to superhot baths and not wallowing for so long.

On a positive note my belt is loose so gone to the next notch. Not measured my waist for a while but I can see its getting smaller, I had a team meeting online today and my manager messaged me to say how tiny I looked which was nice and a boost.

Thank you for all those recipes on what to do with chicken I am going to try each of them when I get some more breasts.

Hope everyone's doing well.

Jenasaurus · 12/01/2023 20:10

@BIWI after the initial 2 weeks are we allowed alcohol like gin and slimline tonic - asking for a friend me

AllTheBlackCoffee · 12/01/2023 20:11

@naemates Grin at your guacamole covered child. I'd give 'em a lick as it's all BC compatible!!

I'm a Sainsbury's gal when it comes to Greek yogurt. Their finest one is nice and 4.1g per 100 so not too bad. I've also used it in place of sour cream in the past and agree with PP (sorry can't remember who) that it makes very little difference taste-wise.

I've survived the day and am ready to make the most of my DH-free house and hit the hay. Need to wait for DS to finish his game of fifa though - ah the joys of having an almost teen who wants to stay up later than you do!

Baystard · 12/01/2023 20:30

That sounds lovely @prettybird, thanks, I look forward to trying it!

Baystard · 12/01/2023 20:43

@Jenasaurus that's really interesting about the bath, I didn't know that. I too have to be mindful of not making it too hot or I get a bit wobbly and light headed when I get out, but I love to wallow in a hot bath.

@prettybird Lidl also do that same thing with chorizo - the regular and spicy are mixed up.

amispeakingintongues · 12/01/2023 20:48

Hiii... newbie here 👋
First day on the low carb, all was going well until 8pm struck and all i can think about is CHOCOLATE. Pray for me.

Pleaseandthankyou · 12/01/2023 20:56

I cooked minced lamb tonight with loads of veg and spices. Sautéed with leeks, turnip, cauliflower and broccoli . I took a big spoonful of a local Greek yoghurt with it and it was vanilla natural instead. The carton must have been mixed. It was absolutely gorgeous but 10% carbs so a no no. What a waste.

katesbushh · 12/01/2023 21:08

Another decent day today.
Slipping on the water though. I'm fine when I'm at home, but at work I often hold back on drinking as I can't go to the toilet as much as I'd need. I work clinically. I have managed 2lt and will try and get some more in before bed.

Breakfast was a coffee with cream.
Lunch chilli and cauliflower rice
Dinner I really wasn't hungry but had some cauliflower soup and added some olive oil as I didn't fancy cream.
I bought a snack bar of cheese at work too as I was peckish.

BIWI · 12/01/2023 21:12

@Jenasaurus are you on any medication for your diabetes?

And yes, you can have the occasional G&T when we move on to Bootcamp Light!

So today:

L: fried up large spoonful of leftover celeriac and leek mash, with two rashers of streaky bacon, a few slices of leftover courgettes and a fried egg.

D: salmon fillet, marinated in sesame oil, lemon juice, garlic, ginger and Chinese five spice, served with cauliflower egg-fried 'rice' (as described up thread!), and stir-fried vegetables: coconut oil, onion, garlic, ginger, chilli, carrot, baby sweetcorn, celery and broccoli, with soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil.

Another good day. Breakfast was Greek yog with a splodge of cream and a little cinnamon - not for me but at least tried it. I had a few bites of cheese after to take the taste away

Lunch was meatballs again as I had made enough for a couple of days. Tea was pork belly with broccoli which was fried off in butter.

Water seems to be going down surprisingly well and thank god the toilet trips are starting to settle!

Spin today and again in the morning. Potentially tomorrow I'm out for brunch - fab little independent place I've been dying to try. I think the best option on the menu might be an eggs Benedict type of thing but will ask for a bit of bacon instead of the sourdough - am hoping this will not be too out of scope. Going to double check menu though and see what specials they will have that might fit better

No, managed with diet alone.

Im not alone with this then, I guess its similar to a sauna which can make you feel a bit shaky too if you stay in too long, I love my baths even with the cost of energy going up it was my daily treat, maybe showering alternate days may be good,

prettybird · 12/01/2023 21:30

@MuthaHubbard - if you didn't like the cinnamon I happen to love it Sad, you could try vanilla powder (I believe that you can get it in Waitrose) or simply some good quality cocoa powder with your yoghurt Smile

QforCucumber · 12/01/2023 21:35

I bought a celeriac! Never had one before and aren’t they rather odd looking. Going to try the airfryer one and maybe the mash too 😀

prettybird · 12/01/2023 21:43

@QforCucumber - my tip for dealing with the celeriac is to use the biggest sharp knife you have and cut chunky chip width circles from the less knobbly end initially. Then just use the big knife to cut the "skin" off from around the edge - don't try to be delicate.

MuthaHubbard · 12/01/2023 21:43

@prettybird ooooo thank you, didn't even know vanilla powder was a thing!

Nugg · 12/01/2023 21:44

@Jenasaurus exactly this happened to me - I wondered if it was somehow related. I was on a call to my daughter and started feeling very sick and dizzy so got out and laid on my bed. Was horrible. I'd already had to get out and open the door to allow cooler air in as I too like a scalding bath! Was drinking water all the time too. Interesting!

prettybird · 12/01/2023 21:45

Sorry, posted too soon. Then cut as appropriate: diced/cubes for boiling (to make mash or purée), long strips for chips, thin slices for dauphinoise.
