2023 Low Carb Bootcamp - THE PREP THREAD

BIWI · 02/01/2023 14:53

Happy New Year everyone! So far, we have 119 people signed up, so I think it's going to be a busy one.

As ever, I'm starting the prep thread a week in advance, to give you all the information you'll need to get started. If low carbing/Bootcamp is new to you, it's really important that you read all this. Even if you've done it before, it's a good idea to re-read!

I'm going to tag everyone, to ensure that people get good notice to come over to this thread. Previous experience tells me that trying to tag everyone in one go just won't work, so I'm doing it in groups of 20.

Here we go:

@Janieread
@Skiphopbump
@Henowner
@ZiggZagg
@TidyDancer
@Comfortablylesslumpy
@Cleanthatup
@Passtheturkey
@Lucienandjean
@Smorgs
@FinallyHere
@EmergentThoughts
@pinknsparkly
@baystard
@SpottyBumPony
@Eanair23
@Potas
@ThistlyPerf
@ListenLinda

@BIWI - many thanks. Just downloaded Google sheets and getting myself prepped so I can have a proper stab at this this time rather than fanny about

Nugg · 05/01/2023 10:28

@BIWI thank you - I tried to search the thread but couldn't see how - am not a long term user so apologies. I can access it but the tab that says Veg Carb Counter simply has this link instead of the colour coded list like the fruit, if that makes sense!

Hello all. I've only just discovered this thread ...please can I join?
I've got lots to lose. I've dabbled with keto in past with some good results but I really am determined this time. I actually started on Monday. Yesterday was a tough one...I had a couple of hours of really painful stomach cramps and diarrhea ( sorry if tmi) but all good today. I've resisted getting back on the scales yet as I can get a bit obsessed.
I've downloaded carb manager and worked out my macros with another keto app recommended by a Facebook group. I've been told that especially if you have lots to lose like me it's good practice to recalculate macros when you e lost 22 lbs, so small goals.

So having had a look at the rules for the group....I'm scrapping the counting and going freestyle as recommended.....🫥

Hmm. Thank you @Nugg - I see what you mean! Looks like somehow extra rows have been inserted. If you scroll down to around row 70 you should see the tables.

I've tried to delete the extra rows, but it won't let me - sounds like a job for @FinallyHere!

@Purpleavocado one of the things we always say on Bootcamp is to remember that breakfast is not a special meal that merits special food! The idea that we only eat certain things comes from Mr Kellogg, back in the day.

Therefore, eat anything you like! It certainly doesn't have to be eggs.

Leftovers from the night before are fine, for example!

If you're missing your cereal, there's a lovely recipe for low carb granola on the vegetarian recipe thread.

Broccoli and cauli for breakfast was such a revelation for me last bootcamp. I LOVE them and now that's what I'm hungry for as soon as I wake up. But they did seem very strange and un-breakfasty at first.

McFarts · 05/01/2023 11:44

Ok im checking in, and ill have a read through laters. Ive never done KETO and my knowledge is minimal! but i know others who have had amazing results. I am very recently diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, im hoping KETO will really help me health wise. Anyone else here also have IBD?

prettybird · 05/01/2023 11:44

@TangledWebOfDeception - yes, I remember you Smile

I didn't get any more Jensen this Christmas Xmas Hmm - although the candelabra that lovely SIL gave me years ago had pride of place on the table on Christmas Eve Xmas Smile. Ds' girlfriend won the almond prize at her first attempt - ds was most put out Xmas Wink

@DontGetEvenGetEverything - I've been known to deliberately shoogle (a technique of cooking in butter in the microwave for newbies Wink) extra brussel sprouts so that I've got leftovers to have for breakfast Xmas Grin

NotDonna · 05/01/2023 11:54

@DontGetEvenGetEverything i too love cauli & broc so wondering if you do anything special with them?

FinallyHere · 05/01/2023 12:18

@BIWI @Nugg

happy to help, though I haven't made any changes. I've attached a snapshot of the Veg Carb counter tab. I know how tedious when your tech support says 'looks OK to me' so apologies for that

@BIWI @nugg

Is it possible that the spreadsheet tab opened with it scrolled across to column G? Try scrolling left maybe? It sometimes does funny things on my phone too.

BIWI · 05/01/2023 13:25

... could also be 'cos I linked to an older spreadsheet, @FinallyHere ?

OP posts:
FinallyHere · 05/01/2023 13:27

@BIWI I checked on the current October 2022 and January 2023

katesbushh · 05/01/2023 13:32

Thank you @BIWI for adding me.

A question to some of the more experienced low carbers.
I'm vegetarian just to make it more interesting for myself.

Any must haves for my shopping list?

Another question
I have dabbled with IF for 6 months. Obviously not very well as I'm still fat but it has stabilised my weight at least.
I tend to go 16:8 and would like to get to OMAD once I'm better with this woe.
But as I've not had breakfast for over a year and can't stomach the thought do I absolutely have to start for the bootcamp? I'm thinking if I have to maybe having a coffee with cream perhaps?

Thank you.

BIWI · 05/01/2023 13:37

@katesbushh have you low carbed before? Are you low carbing now?

The reason behind eating 3 meals a day is to ensure that we're keeping our blood sugar levels stable while we transition into fat-burning and away from carb-burning, so if you're not already low carbing it would be better to do this. You don't have to have a lot to eat, but you do need to eat something, rather than just relying on coffee with cream.

If you're vegetarian, don't forget that you're allowed to include nuts and seeds (in moderation!) in your diet - and go and have a look at the vegetarian recipes here to inspire you.

@BIWI I checked on the current October 2022 and January 2023

That could be why - the one I linked to was July 22.

OP posts:
Nugg · 05/01/2023 14:19

Ah yes the link I had was for July, which explains that at least! I did find it when I scrolled thank you @BIWI

Oneborneverydecade · 05/01/2023 16:25

Can I be added to the list please @BIWI

BIWI · 05/01/2023 16:32

Of course @Oneborneverydecade! Welcome Smile

@Nugg as I said upthread, tomatoes are fine.

Not quite sure why you can't access the spreadsheet - are you using your phone? If so, you'll need to download the Google Sheets app

@BergamotMouse that's a terrible menu! It's very unusual for a menu to have nothing for low carb options, but everything there is either with bread/rice/pasta and/or with some kind of sugary sauce or glaze!

I'd go for the padron peppers, from the nibbles section, and then would ask for a steak without the onion rings/fries, and ask for a salad instead (but with a vinaigrette dressing on the side - make sure it's not balsamic vinegar), or go for a burger, without the bun/fries and again, extra salad.

@WannabeSlimSally why do you feel/think (or know!) that you can't get through the day without that supplement? Look at the ingredients list:

Purified Water, Raw Cane Sugar, Malt Extract (from Barley), Glucose Liquid (Sulphites), Honey, Glycerin, Lysine HCl, Ferric Ammonium Citrate, Flaxseed Oil, Zinc Sulphate, Acidity Regulators: Citric Acid & Sodium Citrate, Beetroot Extract, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Thickener: Xanthan Gum, Calcium Glycerophosphate, L-Carnitine Tartrate, Corn Oil, Natural Source Colour (Mixed Carotenes [Polysorbate 80, Sunflower Oil, Mono & Diglycerides of Fatty Acids, Antioxidants: Ascorbyl Palmitate, DL-Alpha Tocopherol]), Niacin (Nicotinamide), Thiamin (Vitamin B1 as HCl), Natural Flavouring (Orange Ext.), Preservative: Potassium Sorbate, Siberian Ginseng Extract, Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCl), Pantothenic Acid (D-Panthenol), Co-Enzyme Q10, Riboflavin (Vitamin B2 as 5-Phosphate Sodium), Green Tea Extract, Copper Sulphate, Manganese Sulphate, Folic Acid (as Pteroylmonoglutamic Acid), Sodium Hydroxide, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenate, Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), Vitamin B12 (Cyanocobalamin).

Sugar, in some form, is 3 out of the 5 top ingredients, so it really isn't going to help you (from a low carb perspective, that is).

Is there another iron supplement that you could choose instead?

Wow I hadn't fully appreciated just how much sugar is in it. I'm slightly anaemic and always have been regardless of what I eat. An OTC iron supplement really helps and if I don't take it for a few days I feel it. I've not tried iron tablets so I'll given them a go instead of the syrup. Thanks @BIWI 😌

DryWhiteagainW · 05/01/2023 22:38

Another idiotic question from a first timer. If I’m “on the spreadsheet” what does this mean? That we have a weigh in on pace a week and record it? I need to be accountable so this would keep me on tack.
10 yrs ago I did Dukan very successfully. I try to eat low carb but over the years my weight has gone back on (booze mainly) and I want to get back to where I was. This looks. Great.
For breakfast this week I’ve been having smoked salmon omelette which is heaven.
looking at the lists it seems I’ve been dig BC light this week.
2 ltrs of water is a lot, I’ve been sloshing around Grin

BIWI · 05/01/2023 23:13

@DryWhiteagainW on Monday I'll start the first week's chat thread, and there will be a link to the spreadsheet - which you will be listed on - and we all record our weight there. Each Monday we weigh-in and add that week's weight so we can monitor our progress

Thanks for adding me @BIWI just to let you know I'm not officially starting properly until Wednesday. I have dinners and lunches out on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 🤦🏼‍♀️ I'll try to be a bit sensible but will start properly on Wednesday.
