Hopefully, the one where you get beyond the Weeks 3, 4 and 5 doldrums. Grin And if you don't, then KOKO, drink all the water and maybe post what you've been eating so we can see if there is anything you can tweak. We're all here both to support and be supported.

Also, you need to knock the diet cokes on the head. If you feel the need to drink something other than plain water while others are drinking wine, why not have a soda water or a sparkling water with a slice of lemon/lime? The artificial sweeteners can help maintain an addiction to "sweet" stuff Sad

Is lime soda allowed? Or diet tonic? They’re not sweet but I’m wondering if ok or not please?
I think the food part is pretty solid but I think it’s the drinks as you’ve pointed out. Thanks!
Also how much does the Diet Coke matter as long as I’m not having other sweet stuff? It’s not even once a week and is instead of wine etc. I’m not trying to wriggle out if it but very curious to understand. Does Diet Coke still cause an insulin spike? Someone has mentioned before monitors and I’d be interested to see how my body reacts - any links/suggestions please?

The continuous glucose monitor I got to use as part of the zoe health project trials was https://www.freestylelibre.co.uk/libre/

While I found it reassuring that none of my regular bootcamp foodstuffs cause any kind of spike, I'm not sure that the absence of a spike for any specific item would necessarily say that it's ok for any individual. It only measures glucose, whereas I avoid sweetness because don't feel good in my stomach.

I admit I'm biased - having observed the level of corrosion to be found on the pipes which deliver diet 'syrups' to the filler in a bottling plant, I couldn't bring myself to swallow them.

My favourite water flavourings include fresh lime, fresh lemon, fresh mint of fresh ginger for warm water in winter, the same plus cucumber in colder water in summer. Sometimes I push the boat out with a mixture they all mix brilliantly.

DH only drinks fizzy water so we have a soda steam. The bubbles give me hiccups so I prefer still water.

Hope some or all of those appeal.

@NotDonna a key reason for avoiding Diet Coke is that we're trying, on Bootcamp, to avoid artificial and processed foods.

Another reason is that we're trying to break the hold that sweet things have over us.

And there is some suggestion that artificial sweeteners can also spike your insulin - this is a bit more controversial though.

They can also have a negative impact on your gut biome, which can negatively impact your body's ability to regulate blood sugar.

Artificial Sweeteners Alter Gut Bacteria in Humans

When consumed for as little as two weeks, common alternatives to sugar affect intestinal bacterial communities, with some reducing the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose levels, a study finds.

It’s been almost a decade since Jotham Suez, a microbiologist at Johns Hopkins University, first started looking into artificial sweeteners and their health effects. In 2014, as a postdoctoral researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, he worked on a study in mice that suggested artificial sugar alternatives present in everything from lipsticks to toothpaste could lead to obesity and related health condition like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Those early findings sparked controversy, says Suez. Though the study wasn’t the first time scientists had looked at the link between artificial sweeteners and obesity, it was the first one to detail a potential mechanism for it: The sweeteners changed the intestinal bacteria of mice, which play important roles in regulating metabolism, appetite, and fat storage.

“The food industry went ballistic because obviously this is a major threat,” says Robert Lustig, a neuroendocrinologist at University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the work. “They came up with a zillion reasons why the study was no good, particularly that it wasn’t in humans.”

Now, working in the lab of Weizmann Institute of Science immunologist Eran Elinav, Suez and colleagues have taken an array of common artificial sweeteners—saccharin, sucralose, aspartame, and stevia—and filled that gap in the literature by testing them in humans. Their findings, described today (August 19) in Cell, suggest these sweeteners do indeed alter the gut microbiome, as was seen in prior mouse work. This, the researchers say, adversely impacts glucose tolerance, a measure of how readily the body moves sugar from the blood into muscle and fat, possibly leading to weight gain and diabetes.

“In the past several decades, there has been a massive increase in the prevalence of these metabolic conditions” that arise from impaired glucose tolerance, says Suez, who coauthored the new study. “This strategy [of using non-caloric sweeteners] has been around for a while as an alternative to caloric sweeteners, but our findings beg the question [of] whether they are producing the benefits or not.”

To test whether sweeteners impact gut microbes and glycemic responses, the researchers recruited volunteers with normal blood glucose levels who did not consume sweeteners in their diet to participate in a randomized controlled trial. Volunteers deemed eligible after an initial screening were split into one of six groups. Four groups consumed six commercially available sachets of either aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, or stevia every day for 14 days. As all four sweeteners contained the sugar glucose as a bulking agent, a fifth group received an equivalent amount of glucose (five grams), while the sixth received no intervention. All participants measured their blood glucose levels before, during, and after the treatment period using a glucose monitor that was attached to their upper arm. They also performed glucose tolerance tests (GTTs), which evaluate the body’s glycemic response by measuring how quickly blood glucose levels return to a baseline after glucose is consumed, and collected stool and saliva samples that were analyzed for their microbiomes.

When the researchers profiled the participants’ oral and gut microbiomes, they found that there were significant differences in the populations of bacteria before and after regular ingestion of artificial sweeteners, particularly for participants who took sucralose and saccharin. The control groups that ingested glucose or took no supplement did not experience changes in their microbiomes.

The participants who took sucralose and saccharin also exhibited larger peaks in blood glucose in GTTs conducted during the treatment period than those in the glucose control group, suggesting that those sweeteners may push the body towards glucose intolerance, where tissues struggle to absorb glucose from the blood. No significant differences in glycemic responses were observed for the glucose-only, aspartame, or stevia groups when compared with the no intervention control.

While these findings are alarming, says Lustig, the “slam dunk” came when the researchers used mouse experiments in the study to prove cause and effect between certain sweeteners, gut microbes, and glucose intolerance.

Suez and his colleagues took microbes from the feces of participants with elevated blood sugar levels and inserted the bacteria into germ-free mice by feeding them a slurry. After a few days, when the microbes colonized the animals’ gut, the researchers looked at the glycemic responses of these mice. They found that the animals’ ability to regulate blood glucose levels were also inhibited.

“This is fundamental because it proves causation, not just correlation,” says Lustig. However, he notes that this is a medium-term study that doesn’t follow the weight or glycemic responses of human participants over six months or a year. Doing so, according to him, will better answer the ultimate question about the effects of artificial sweeteners on weight gain and the development of health conditions like diabetes.

Daniel Garrido, a microbiologist at Pontifical Catholic University of Chile who was not involved in the work, also notes that the mechanism that connects changes in gut microbiome to glucose intolerance is still unknown. “But the study will get researchers thinking about it, which is an important step in the right direction,” he says.

Suez says the team is already working on this. The group wants to develop algorithms that will help identify which microbes in the gut make people susceptible to glucose intolerance after drinking or eating artificial sweeteners, information that could eventually help people make the best dietary decisions for their personal microbial makeup.

I just had my sea bass it was absolutely heavenly, had it with courgette in the end as all the other veg in the fridge had gone rank.

Can we talk about a major non scale down side? I'm so cold, I was fine, shopped, wrapped etc then suddenly I went freezing and my feet turned white, couldn't warm up for hours. I never used to get cold and I remembered all last winter having cold feet.

We've got a Phillips Saeco (small) bean-to-cup machine that gave up the ghost months ago, having been used a lot over the years. We keep on meaning to see if we can get it fixed but haven't got round to taking it to a repair shop (there is a local "repair cafe"). If we do and it can be fixed, we'll give it to ds' girlfriend who likes her coffee (ds doesn't drink it).

@ditavonteesed - I've always suffered easily from the cold (have Reynauds syndrome where my fingers and toes will go yellow and numb if they get too cold). I know how to manage it through (ski in silk socks and silk linnet gloves, for example) but I notice I feel the cold more when I'm on this WoE Confused It's one of the few negatives Sad

I don't know, though, if it's simply because I'm losing weight and literally have less fat to insulate me Wink

Even though my hair is longer, I wear scarves a lot to keep my neck warm - that seems to help Smile

We well DH's uses it for fizzy rather than still cold drinks.

As for feeling the cold, the last few years I have been permanently overheated and a tad embarrassed to admit to it. I've always taken it as a sign of oversupply of adipose tissue Blush since it's a tad late for me to blame the hot flushes of menopause

Now I'm proudly wearing M&S heatgen plus thermal leggings indoors

Even the gentlest of exercise still warms me up: there is a long way for me to go yet to reach the middle of the green BMI range. Would be glad if exercise without my face going bright red would be a benefit of discarded weight

Busy few days, relieved to make it to Friday!

I had an unusual thing yesterday as I was genuinely really hungry and a bit carb cravy in the evening, even after eating well, and I ate some scottish oatcakes with huge wedges of butter. Can't get worked up about it, listened to my body and it's shown generally good judgement recently. Belt still fastened up on the smallest hole today though (NSV!), and I don't feel any ill effects like bloating. All fine appetite-wise today again, satisfied by good LC food.

@ditavonteesed yes, im sure that less heat is generated in LC diets. I'm permanently layered in thermal layers at the moment, I've even gone from normal thermals to the fleece sort. Last week I was in thermal leggings with tracksuit bottoms over the top! @FinallyHere I use feeling cold as a sign that my HRT is working!

Not been well here and have eaten everything!
Im striking this week off as a "my body needed it" kind of week! Feeling slightly better today so will be back on BC strict from tomorrow.

On a positive note, Iris has got my steps up (sick or not, this girl demands treatment of a princess) and not long until we can go for long peaceful walks together. She's getting so big now and feisty 😈

I went to a catered event the other night and had soda for the first time in weeks and it tasted a bit weird. I mean I love soda so it was still a treat but it tasted SO sweet and a bit metallic. I'd forgotten this effect from the last time I did keto.

I have discovered how much of an effect my anxiety has on my eating, since starting the propranolol I have had no trouble sticking to eating well, yesterday I felt really anxious and over thinky again and my headache was back and I could not control my eating, I was good all day and then in the evening as dh was out I ordered dessert takeout. Line drawn and back on it.
I feel like since doing this woe I have learnt so much about how my body works which is important but I hadn't really seen the direct link between mental state and food before.

@Backstreets just plain soda, like fizzy water?

I have no idea what Mondays weigh in will bring I've been so up and down this week on the scales.

Ds, completely unprompted, gave dh a lovely photo of the two of them (dh and our friend) sitting on the patio enjoying some bubbly in the sun, which he'd got off Facebook, got printed in Boots and put it in a lovely photo frame he'd bought in John Lewis Smile

I had thought it was strange when he went in to town for a quick recce after work last week, because when I've asked him for ideas for Christmas, or what he was thinking of getting for his girlfriend, he's replied "It's not December yet" Wink

I've been very restrained today: the wee wine company that our friend ran with another friend of his had its annual wine tasting today (coincidentally on the day that would've been his birthday today) so dh and I helped at it.

I had half a glass of bubbly at the start, after finishing setting up, to toast the birthday of our absent friend and then spent the afternoon on "my" table pouring wine, describing and advising on the wines that I hadn't actually tasted myself and drinking lots of water Halo
