Summer Low Carb mini-Bootcamp - week 5

StuntNun · 30/08/2021 06:24

Hello and welcome to week 5 of our mini-Bootcamp. If you've had the usual week 3 / week 4 weight loss stall then the scales should get moving again now. And we've all got a couple of weeks to really try to finish strong and get the best results we can get.

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness is here. I can't wait to find out how everyone is doing so don't just add your weight to the spreadsheet; let us know on this thread.

I'll put a reminder of the Bootcamp Light rules in the next post.

Hello!
Right im back on it, today -
Breakfast - 2 boiled eggs mashed with butter cheese mayo and s and p
Lunch - cherry tomatoes from our garden cooked in butter mixed with some goats cheese on low carb toast
Dinner - roast chicken plus skin, carrots, peas and sprouts, gravy.
Just had raspberries and clotted cream.

I have a real issue with stuffing all the sweet crap so I'm really proud of myself today. Smile

Thanks @prettybird Aberdeen was indeed one of those we looked at (what subject does your DS do - DD is looking at some combination of economics/politics)? My DH was also at St Andrews (probably longer ago than you) and managed to spend 5 years there, so we did have a native guide there. And we looked at Edinburgh and Glasgow and loved the look of both (though all tours currently just self guided views of the outside of buildings - everything else still virtual for now).

prettybird · 30/08/2021 22:06

I was at St Andrews 1978-84 (one year in France and one year's change of course from Russian to Economics for my joint honours Shock).

Ds is going into Senior Honours of an MA in Politics and International Relations - so similar to what your dd wants to do. As well at PIR, he did Economics (Micro and Macro) and Philosophy (different types - but don't ask me what they are Wink), 20th century European history and Macro Sociology in 1st year. He did PIR, International Public Law and 2nd year Macro Sociology in 2nd year (had to get a dispensation as he hadn't done Micro Sociology) and I think another 1st year Philosophy to complete the required number of units.

He's really enjoying it - although of course his Uni experience has been spoilt by Covid. At least he got a "normal" 1st year and 2/3 of 2nd year.

He says Aberdeen is like a cross between St Andrews (which he hated as it felt too much like a giant Hogwarts and thought he would be claustrophobic when he went to the Open Day - to which I said astute description: I'd loved it but it's not for everyone) and a big city Uni like Glasgow (although he applied to Strathclyde rather than Glasgow as he felt its course was better suited to his interests).

He'd only gone to the Aberdeen Open Day under duress from me and he loved it.

He's also enjoying playing rugby up there (but not Uni rugby) - although that's perhaps less of a consideration for your dd Wink

PastramiNoRye · 30/08/2021 22:32

I'm a Glasgow Uni alumnus and I absolutely loved it (1998-2002). Happy memories of the West End Smile

SaSamhradh · 30/08/2021 23:07

@VeryLittleOwl sister! I was away, ate all the cake, & crisps & everything else I could get my hands on. Back a week & in the zone.

I'm down 6lbs, which I think was a bit of detox with all the water, but some fat too hopefully.
Onward.

StuntNun · 31/08/2021 07:27

@ouchmyfeet please can you have a look at the spreadsheet as we have a couple of new additions to be sorted into order.

@KateF Iceland do multipacks packs of frozen fish fillets (usually about 5 in there) that are 3 packs for £10, I’ve only ever bought the salmon which is lovely but they do mackerel, white fish fillets etc.

Andi2020 · 31/08/2021 09:40

Loving the Uni talk
My oldest is 18 and just started last year of Alevel today we are in NI
She hasn't made up her mind yet what her next stage will be.
She would like something in Security in Airport. Border control or law

prettybird · 31/08/2021 09:46

We talk about all sorts on here @Andi2020 Grin

Mimosa1 · 31/08/2021 10:28

Found you! Down 1kg for me this week, which I'm pleased with as nothing seemed to be moving mid week. Another 9kg to go.

I'm starting a new in person job tomorrow so will need to get into a routine for lunches and things. It's in a shared office so I'm not sure about the fridge, microwave etc. situation but I'm sure the extra walking to the station and to meetings will be good for me. I've been enjoying Glennon Doyle's podcasts for the train, if anyone has recommendation they enjoy, please let me know.

Bryonyshcmyony · 31/08/2021 11:00

Morning all! Scales flashed on 12.4 but settled on 12.5, which I am happy with as had been stuck on 12.5 and half/12.6 for a while

Was going to fast until lunch but was ridiculously hungry so had a bowl of stuff left over in the fridge - fried a few slices of pancetta (very thin) and had on a sliced avocado with a blob of mayo and some grated cheese on top. Then a teaspooon of crunchy peanut butter. Yum

Shopping day today so no idea whats for dinner yet.

Bryonyshcmyony · 31/08/2021 11:01

Im back to work next week [cry] I can be back home by 2.30 so I will prbably just take almond milk for coffees and a couple of hard boiled eggs chopped up with salad and mayo to eat for breakfast/lunch.

pangolinfan · 31/08/2021 14:08

Thanks so much @prettybird. Great to understand how flexible and broad based studies in Scotland can be in practice as well as in theory - that's one of the things attracting DD (also DH is Scottish and we have spent a lot of time there (not in the winters though))! And you would have overlapped with DH at St Andrews for at least some of the time Smile I know what you and your DS mean about St Andrews and I think DD may be erring on the side of a bigger city.
@PastramiNoRye we stayed in an Airbnb in the West End last week a couple of blocks from the uni campus and I thought it was a fab area - admittedly it was a warm evening but such a buzz in and around Byres Road - loved it. Also thought the campus was great, and closer together than I expected - we didn't get to see how far away any halls of residence were though - leaving that for another trip when we might be able to see the inside.

PastramiNoRye · 31/08/2021 14:12

@pangolinfan it's fab isn't it!

I did my first year at Wolfson Halls in Maryhill, which is (was?) one of the furthest away halls. Although we weren't as close to the uni as some of the other halls, there was a great sense of community and the wee shuttle bus was always an event in itself!

I was in a flat on Byres Road for the rest of the time and it was an amazing time!

recreationalcalpol · 31/08/2021 15:06

Hi all, I have been very quiet for the last week or so as I have been away on hols. However, I really made great efforts to stick to plan - didn’t eat anything carby at all (I even resisted a cream tea and an ice cream that were bought for me 💪💪)

Have maintained this week (well, lost 0.2lbs but that’s hardly worth reporting!) but am putting that down to eating more calories in general whilst on holiday with cooked breakfasts and the like. I also only have 14lb to lose now, so it’s going to be a bit slower.

Anyhoo, today:

B: berries, Greek yog and keto granola
L: egg mayo salad with tomato
D: still in the planning. I have chicken breast to use up, but don’t fancy a curry or anything with sauce. So am pondering on that.

Well done to everyone on their losses!

recreationalcalpol · 31/08/2021 15:09

Oh, and my 3 year old starts pre school next week, so I’m going to be doing a bit more walking back and forth for pickups, which will hopefully help.

prettybird · 31/08/2021 15:37

@pangolinfan - you can tell your dh that I stayed in the Atholl the whole time I was at Uni (except for my year in France, 80-81) - he'll know where that was Wink (although I believe its nickname is now Jeebs or JBS). Our local was the Dunvegan. Many a misspent hour after 10, after I'd finished studying of course Wink was wiled away in there Grin

Aberdeen has an ever broader base than St Andrews in that you need to do four subjects in 1st year (St Andrews is, or at least was, 3. Not sure about Glasgow). But the great thing is that you can choose to take any of them on provided you pass the subject Wink to subsequent years to do as your degree subject and aren't constricted to the subject that you applied to do (the same applies at all Scottish Unis).

StuntNun · 31/08/2021 17:15

I'm a St Andrews alumnus as well, 1994-1998 studying Biochemistry as you might well expect. In my time there I also studied Chemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, French, Russian and Old Testament Studies. The four-year course in Scotland lets you really branch out from your degree subject. One of my friends graduated with joint honours in Biology and Geology which can't be a common qualification!

Mandate · 31/08/2021 19:06

I don't often post, but another St Andrews grad here, I was there from 1993-97 so we overlapped @StuntNun! I thought I would go to Glasgow Uni like my parents did but when I visited it felt too large and St Andrews felt a better fit for me. It can feel claustrophobic after a while, I definitely agree, by the end of the 4 years I was ready to go somewhere larger.... and I moved to London!

pangolinfan · 31/08/2021 19:13

Gosh, thanks to all for excellent Scottish uni intel. What an erudite bunch on here. Now feeling very positive about DD potentially going so far away from her soft Southern home. Just the small matter of applying, getting some offers and exam results now Grin

FusionChefGeoff · 31/08/2021 19:48

I feel a bit deflated that I have nothing to add on Scottish unis..... my primary school best friend went to St Andrews... does that help?!

My weigh in was not good. Didn't expect a loss but I'm definitely more than I thought I was.

But that is it now for holidays / family reunions / generally being massively out of routine so I need to get a handle on snacking!!!

I was STARVING this morning but DH has just had a positive lat flow so was sorting out PCRs then builders arrived to do the gutters then play dates had to be cancelled, physio slots rearranged, work calls etc etc so it was 1pm before I ate! We've all come back negative but waiting on him - so he's isolated up in our bedroom and I'm run ragged now trying to do everything.

Anyway, he's fine - a heavy head cold so far so keeping everything crossed. He's got asthma and is overweight but is double jabbed.

L: small (for me!) Salmon and avocado salad with boiled egg with mayo
D: sausage, braised cabbage, small freezer portion of cauli cheese and swede bake.

Last piece of 'holiday' cheese
Dark choc mini bar

And that is it - kitchen closed!!

FusionChefGeoff · 31/08/2021 19:50

Oh and I am carrying a recurring knee / IT band injury which means I'm not running at the moment which may also have contributed to my gain as I usually run 15-20 miles a week so I'm going to have to be careful

pangolinfan · 31/08/2021 20:08

I'm off running too atm and miss it. Is cycling an option with your injury? I've recently joined a club for first time ever because they started a women only ride which I thought might be less intimidating than a sea of Lycra ninjas, and it's lovely - sociable, supportive and a great way to discover new routes locally. Now joining mixed rides as the ninjas turn out to be friendly too.
BestIsWest · 31/08/2021 20:19

Nothing much to add on Scottish Unis except to say that the 4 year course sounds a marvellous idea. I do have a niece at Strathclyde if that counts.

Having terrible indigestion at the moment, cheese induced I think.

FusionChefGeoff · 31/08/2021 23:25

@pangolinfan yes I can cycle - but I'm not a fan of road biking I'm too nervous. We've got a trainer in the garage so was using that last week but DH has taken the bike off and is too poorly atm to put it back on and I don't know how to do it!! Hoping he recovers soon!!
