Morning all.

[[Here's the Spreadsheet as always
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18CKhdQ3FlGz_8H53AA2Pqm4xmvGLHO6vBrkNWCkSO48/edit#gid=788946144 ]]

I hope everyone had a good week, and that any Mother's Day treats haven't messed things up too much Grin

So we enter our final two weeks. Still time to shift a couple of those pesky pounds - especially if you keep focused and stay strict. And a reminder, channelling my inner Shag, WATER, WATER, WATER!

Morning all. I haven't been posting, because I was honestly getting depressed with everyone's fabulous losses when I'm struggling to lose these last few lockdown pounds, but I have KOKO'd.

In addition I've cut down on the dairy, as was recommended last time, started intermittent fasting, and added in a Joe Wicks routine 5 days a week. So I was horrified to discover this morning when stepping on the scales that far from losing, I'd gained another 2.5lbs - taking me up to 10st 8.5 lbs, which whilst still within the healthy range for my height, is the biggest I've been in about 18 months and over half a stone more than I want to be.

After a few minutes of staring in horror, I remembered @BIWI suggesting moving the scales to someone who's weight was just not shifting. Moved them onto the carpet, and suddenly I'm 9st 1lb - which I'm clearly not. Try on a couple of other areas of the hard bathroom floor, and both times got 10st 5.75lb - which while more than I'd like, feels more reasonable than the other two.

So what goes on? Do I just need to change the batteries in my scales???

nowlook · 18/03/2021 08:29

Do you have the Bootcamp Renpho scales Greebo? They're really good, although they sometimes weigh heavier than your usual scales when they arrive Wink

prettybird · 18/03/2021 08:32

Scales are very sensitive to the floor that they're on - both "soft" (carpet) and uneven. Maybe your scales had moved position slightly, hence the disappointing figures.

I had found a specific spot lining up on a tile in the bathroom that I used to weigh on. When our new heating got put in, the tiles all got lifted (and is currently wooden floor boards and a runner, while we wait until we can get a whole new bathroom put in), so I no longer had a "correct" position. I now have to take the scales through to the kitchen and --carefully- line them up on the edge of the island unit, so that I know it's a consistent position. It did change my weight initially but going forward, I know I can repeat the weight if I get off and get on again.

Yes they do, by a whole kilo! I compared them to my calibrated work ones and confirmed it, so I sent them back and kept my perfectly functioning Omron ones (which have fancy handlebars to tell me I'm mostly made of fat!).
RagzReturnsRebooted · 18/03/2021 09:29

Have shoved some frozen cauliflower cheese in the air frier to have for breakfast. Carbier than I'd like considering portion size (flour I suppose), so I won't be buying it again, but to be honest my carbs have mostly been too low rather than too high (plenty of

ZiggZagg · 18/03/2021 09:31

Good morning campers!

I'm going to attempt the cheese scones today for over the weekend breakfasts.

B SLC Hot Cross Bun
L Tuna Mayo Salad
D Lamb Ribs and Cabbage

Hope everyone has a lovely day!

BIWI · 18/03/2021 09:48

@LongtimelurkerL

Today - 4 litres of water plus 2 cups black coffee and will prob have a herbal tea and/or a bovril this evening and some beef jerky

L - courgetti, pesto, artichoke, plus leftovers from yesterday’s dinner (the jambalaya)
S - beef burger, artichoke, mushrooms with garlic and butter, Mayo and guac

Seem ok? What am I doing wrong?? Also know my cals roughly as am putting into MyFitnessPal to check carbs and it’s about 1,200 and 20g carbs

Sorry @LongtimelurkerL I meant to reply to this last night, but I forgot Blush

Can I just gently point out that yesterday was only day 3 for you! You're not doing anything wrong - other than counting your carbs and calories Wink - but you do need to be patient. The weight didn't go on all in one go, so it stands to reason it won't come off in one go either.

Remember - this is a marathon not a sprint Flowers

Hi. I started lurking about 3 weeks ago and have lost 5kg so far. Can i ask what people do about salt? I'm struggling with headaches this week and took a rehydration sachet this morning which has really helped so i think I might be salt deficient. I don't cook with salt, the only thing I add it to is scrambled egg, I just don't have a taste for it and never add it to sauces or veg etc. Normally, I'd get enough salt from eating processed foods but I have no idea how much I need to add to food now. I use salted butter and occasionally soy sauce if I do a stir fry, but apart from those I don't think I use any products containing salt.

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

What about how well your clothes are fitting? That's a more reliable way to really monitor your progress.

And have you been taking any measurements?

With your scales, are they the type that will work on carpet? Many don't, and you have to buy ones that specifically state that they will. It could be worth changing the batteries, just to see, but it's far more likely that it's the surface that you have them on.

Sorry you're feeling a bit low though - it is tough sometimes. Just remember that a lot of people will have felt the same when you were seeing all your fabulous losses!

You know that this WOE works for you Flowers

You can tell when you’re low-carbing from the excitement you get from a vegetable shop 😂. Sadly I cannot get celeriac within 100 miles of me, ever, and I do like it. I try not to get jealous of the rest of you who can get it!
Today’s meals: L - garlic stuffed chicken breast & salad, D - beef goulash with cauliflower & broccoli.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/03/2021 10:02

Jeans are a little tight, BIWI.

Do we think it's likely that 10st 5lb is the real weight, as I got that twice and only got 10st 8lb once? It's massively depressing if I've gained that much whilst working so hard.

LongtimelurkerL · 18/03/2021 10:13

Ok - thanks @BIWI - I guess i'm just reading the fab losses some people get in week one and thinking I might not get one at all - I am actually enjoying the food so that helps - i'm the sort that wants to see at least a tiny bit of progress or i'll give up which I know is silly! Confused

Today -
B - Black coffee x2
L - Guac with school canteen low carb something (will update later!)
D - 2 egg 'pizza' with anchovies and goats cheese (not going to put any tom sauce on it) and a side of buttered asparagus - might pinch some pepperoni off the top off the normal pizza my DD is having!

ouchmyfeet · 18/03/2021 10:15

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I had a big sulk on Monday as I put on half a pound. I'd had 2 weeks of basically no movement on the scales whilst doing all the right things and sticking to the rules. Totally understand stepping away from the thread when lots are seeing losses, it is hard. KOKO though, I stepped on the scales this morning and I've had a 4lb whoosh since Monday. Not saying that to depress you further, hopefully just illustrating the value of keeping on keeping on. You've got this.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/03/2021 10:23

I've been KOKO'ing since May 2019, I just don't understand why I've suddenly started gaining!

I exercise most days, I drink at least 3 litres of water a day, I never have bread, potatoes, crisps, rice, pasta, sweets, cake, pastry, chocolate apart from the occasional of very dark high cocoa stuff. I don't drink much apart from a glass or two of dry white or red or a gin and slim at the weekend. I eat FLGV and plenty of butter, eggs and fatty meats and have cut right back on cream and cheese - which I love.

Im still gaining. I'm fed up and angry and on the verge of giving up and letting myself get fat again.

Ninkanink · 18/03/2021 10:26

But why?

And I mean this kindly...

Why would you ‘give up and get fat again’ just because you a) may not get any slimmer or b) have had a very small temporary gain?

Examine this and really think about why.

Flowers
Ninkanink · 18/03/2021 10:28

Also, perhaps it’s time to add in a treat here and there. Never having anything is not a sustainable lifestyle choice and you will only become resentful (as you can see, as it’s happening already).

Blurpblorp · 18/03/2021 10:28

Hi everyone, hope you're having good mornings so far. Thanks for the recipe suggestions... might try the leek and fennel gratin. Also the Male Performative Cooking thread is a hoot. SO my experience with my exDH.

What was the nasty thread about?

Might be in my head; but can you feel when you're in ketosis? I had my best day yet yesterday (thanks for the encouragement) and I felt sort of sweaty, jittery but not in a way that made me feel unwell. Maybe my body adjusting to less food than I've had before plus I'm doing about 15:9 as opposed to 0:0. Be interested to know...

I'm vegetarian/vegan so bit bummed how many carbs are in some meat substitutes. Anyhoo, today's plan is:

B - two veggie sausages, two eggs
S - rhubarb yoghurt
L - broccoli and cheddar soup
D - vegan Pukka pie chicken and green beans fried in garlic and butter. I know this isn't on the plan but it's in the house and needs eating. Plus I've already done a power walk this morning and will do another on way to pick my DD up from school.

StuntNun · 18/03/2021 10:53

Blurp I used to feel a bit rubbish and jittery when my carbs were too low and I went into deep ketosis. Funnily enough I don't even notice any more. I suppose that means I'm more metabolically flexible than I used to be.

Don't give up Greebo. Weight loss stalls are inevitable. KOKO some more!

@Blurpblorp

Nasty thread was basically a poster called Cormoran who is a bit of an evangelical vegan (are there any who aren't? Wink), who posted that

  • I gained my knowledge only from YouTube and Instagrammers/bloggers rather than actual science
  • Bootcamp is a high protein diet, which will give us all cancer, despite it being pointed out several times that it's a medium protein diet
  • I recommend processed foods, again despite it being pointed out that this couldn't be further from the truth

Whereas there were some interesting links provided, the tone was unpleasant, and it was becoming more and more a personal attack on me (note said poster doesn't go on the Fasting or 5:2 threads to make their points ... Hmm). Anyway, eventually I asked MNHQ to delete the thread, which they did.

So. Now to deal with your post!

If you're feeling sweaty and jittery it could well be that you're in ketosis, but it could also be a sign that your electrolytes are imbalanced - you need, in particular, sodium, magnesium and potassium.

Sodium is the key one - so you need to make sure that you're cooking with salt and adding it to your food. With all the water that we drink on Bootcamp it's important to really up your salt intake.

Food sources for the others include salmon, avocado, spinach and full fat natural yoghurt. You could also try using LoSalt, which is a potassium-based condiment (although this shouldn't replace actual salt).

In the short term, try a hot drink made from Oxo, Bovril or Marmite - or add salt and lemon juice to a glass of water.

You can also get electrolyte supplements, if you start to feel more unwell (e.g. Zero, by High5 - from the High5 website or places like Holland & Barrett)

I realise you're a veggie/vegan, so your carb intake is going to be higher than those of us who eat meat/fish, but watch out for those meat substitutes, as they can be very, very processed - which isn't what Bootcamp is all about.

A couple of particular things - rhubarb yoghurt?! Fruit not allowed on Bootcamp (the first two weeks at least) and this also sounds like it would be sweetened, either with sugar - not allowed - or sweeteners - also not allowed!

And the pie? Why? If it needs to be eaten, couldn't someone else eat it?

You've also this week, your first week! had fruit juice - which isn't allowed - and a baguette - also not allowed.

If you seriously want to shed the weight and follow Bootcamp, you really do have to knock fruit, sugar, bread and pastry on the head. Otherwise it simply won't work. Worse, if you're upping your fat, you'll end up gaining weight!

Morning all

GreebolsMySpiritAnimal I could have written your thread. This bootcamp I have managed to loose my Christmas gain and have then been up and down the same couple of pounds. I wondered if a bit of it for me is that I am just not as active through the day as I normally am. Therefore I decided my March challenge would be a minimum of 10 mins on my exercise bike plus a dog walk every day. Am now up to 30 mins each day and yes like you I have gained a couple of pounds, but I don’t think it is fat, if I had fancy scales I suspect that my body composition would have changed.

However, I am totally with you on how disheartening it is. All I can do is koko, and hope that eventually it will even out, but if this is my weight for the time being I can also live with that. I have also noticed that lots of people seem to be stalling on this bootcamp and I wonder if it is lockdown related, as we are not moving as much if we are not popping here and there out of the home.

Sorry I can’t remember who it was who said they are getting a puppy 🐶 but we got our first dog 3 years ago, a Springer Spaniel. I adore having a dog and wish for many reasons that we had got one years ago. I agree that the boards on mumsnet are a great source of info. Also totally agree with the advice given here. Just to add that we used a crate for ours which was brilliant, he now sleeps in the utility room. To begin with he had the crate inside a play pen.

Think about how you want your dog to be, ours does not go upstairs for example but will sleep on a blanket on the sofa ( I blame DH , if I had time again it would be no sofa) DH likes to have him sit with him though 😀.

He has never been allowed to jump up, it only takes a tiny dog to knock a frail person over. I was very firm about this due to ageing fil and mil, who at the time thought I was being OTT (fil has since become far more frail) and the fact that we (in normal times) have dd2s friends visiting who have additional needs. Also try to take them to as many different places, experiences as possible, eg we took him to dds drama group for young people with additional needs, so he got used to wheelchairs etc.

Before you get your puppy it’s worth sorting out pet insurance, we have pet plan lifetime cover and also investigate which vet others recommend. Also think about how you are going to transport your puppy in the car. We go a small crate for the boot. It may be worth thinking about puppy training classes or 1 to 1. Also just to say we got ours at 12 weeks, he was virtually house trained and after about a week he slept through the night ( or I just didn’t hear him).

Hope that helps.

Oneborneverydecade · 18/03/2021 11:07

@MrsOmelette do you want me to post you a celeriac? I'm happy to

@Bestbees sorry you're having a tough time. I hope today goes better. We're in the transition stage with DD where she should probably drop her nap, and would sleep better at night BUT I'm not sure I have the mental capacity to parent her for 12 solid hours in lockdown

BIWI · 18/03/2021 11:12

Thanks for your post @NotwatchingSpooks

I think the best advice I can give to you and @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal (and anyone else who feels that the scales aren't rewarding their work), is to step back a little and stop worrying (or obsessing!) about the number on the scales.

First, it's not the most accurate way to measure progress. That's why we recommend taking measurements and/or using your clothes as a more tangible method.

Second, just think about the way you're eating. Are you enjoying your food? Do you feel deprived? Are you eating more healthy food than before, or if you were on a low fat/low calorie diet?

Third, examine what you've been eating. Well and truly and dispassionately - as if you were being asked to critique a newbie to Bootcamp. Are you really following the rules? Are you really eating enough fat and drinking enough water? Have you allowed carb creep?

It can be all too easy to allow the occasional to become the more frequent to become the regular! (And sadly, believe me, I speak with the bitter voice of experience here Blush)

Finally, remember, the nearer you are to your target the slower the loss will be. So also have a look at your portions. Are you eating too much? Do you need a 3-egg omelette, or could it be 2? Do you need 2 eggs, 2 rashers of bacon and 2 sausages, or could it just as easily be one of each?

OP posts:
Blurpblorp · 18/03/2021 11:21

@BIWI yeesh sorry that happened to you. Anyone forcing their ideas onto others about anything winds me up. Thinking about the evangelical stret preacher who looked my 10 year old daughter in the eye and told her she'd go to hell if she didn't repent Hmm

Thanks for all that info and I know I'm not following the plan properly yet. I've got food I need to eat and no, no-one else in my house will eat it. I'm feeling better already so am going eat low carb where possible and up my exercise and cane the water whilst I finish these carby items. Can't tell you how much my diet is already less carby than it was before! And being here is great inspiration for me.

prettybird · 18/03/2021 11:22

I still haven't got back to my pre-Christmas weight Hmm

But in an NSV, lovely SIL, who'd popped round to pick up a loaf of freshly baked sourdough I still enjoy baking them even though I don't eat them Confused (which I laid on the driveway for her, so as to maintain social distancing), asked me if I'd lost more weight. Last time I saw her properly was on Christmas Day on the patio, so technically I was 2.5lb lighter then Shock

Mimosa1 · 18/03/2021 11:23

@Dreamqueen what about a shakshuka and just dropping the yolks in?

I'm sorry you're frustrated @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal are you on maintenance and Is this just normal variation or do you think something else is going on?

I've started the fitness challenge and DD is a martinet so she's keeping me on the straight and narrow. She finds it very amusing to call out the exercises. Clearly a future PT/torturer!

I've discovered the most ambrosial baked cheese dish from M&S called a "Cornish cruncher cheese bake" It comes in a little terracotta pot and is basically cheddar, cider and creme fraiche. Highly recommend !
