Week 3 - Jan '21 Low Carb Bootcamp - time for Light?

BIWI · 31/01/2021 11:40

Well thanks to all the chat, I've had to start this week's thread earlier than usual Grin

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to declare all

You now have a choice: you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means you can re-introduce nuts and seeds, some fruit and alcohol - all in moderation.

However, also bear in mind that weeks 3 & 4 are notorious for little or not weight loss and this is nothing to do with moving on to Bootcamp Light. It's just something that seems to happen.

So it's up to you. You can stay on Bootcamp if you wish, or move on to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid - so you do Bootcamp during the week but relax into Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you decide - good luck! Here's to a good week ahead.

Thanks @venusandmars for the feedback. The peanut butter was a bit carby and I know I ate a lot more than I should have.

I’ve got plenty of salad for tomorrow’s lunch and veg for dinner. Including a tiny slightly battered aubergine as that was all that was left on the shelf. Seems shortages all around. Would love a couple bags of spring greens

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 01/02/2021 22:47

@ouchmyfeet you’re doing well to get through 5L, I have to drink 4.5 and I’m just about doing it! I’ve got some Zero tablets - they do contain sweeteners so not absolutely ideal, but allowed! One tablet a day seems to be keeping my electrolytes on track.

Finally caught up! I agree with a PP that there was chat I'd have joined in with if I'd been there in time! 1.6lbs down taking the total to just under half a stone and hitting my first mini target. Over the weekend highlights included a Beef Casserole with lovely marbled Chuck steak with celeriac and spicy roasted cauliflower with curry. Today had leftover curry from Friday night with lots of salad for lunch and marinated garlic chicken with roasted broccoli for dinner. Not good at water on the weekends and then get out of the habit. Almost made my target today,

Bestbees · 02/02/2021 07:21

Morning everyone.

After the eat more fat reminder I ate lots at dinner last night (butter in celeriac mash, fried fish and then made pesto, cream cheese and cream sauce in same oily pan) was delicious and I have woken not hungry!

Plan for today
B I am taking two boiled eggs to work to eat as I get hungry
L prawn mayo and avo salad from yesterday, but boosted by adding a tin of sardines and more mayo to up the fat and see me through to dinner
D homemade meat loaf and butter veg.

Lots of mixed posts yesterday so hoping a better day for all. @DulcetMoans I gained too and worry about fat, but advice was to increase it so might be the same for you!

StuntNun · 02/02/2021 07:44

I was thinking about making meatloaf BestBees as my DCs might like it. Do you have a recipe you can recommend?

Bestbees · 02/02/2021 07:51

@StuntNun I just fry up a load of veg that has been grated. Today's is aubergine (we have loads, sorry they are hard to get for some) carrot and courgette and a finely dice onion/leek/shallot. Add garlic/herbs/spices. Mixed with meat- I have used pork mince but you can use any type I guess, and/or inside of sausages. Mix until thoroughly combined, get hands involved so it's all squished up. Press into a loaf tin and cook for about an hour. Leave for 5 mins before serving to firm it up a bit. I have made beef with a tomato basil sauce before, I guess you could make all sorts of flavours: Thai pork with stir fry? Lamb to serve with a Greek salad? I am hoping also that left overs will be good for lunches.

StuntNun · 02/02/2021 08:08

Thanks Bestbees I remember it fondly from when I was a child but I have no clue what recipe my dad used. Ours came wrapped in streaky bacon

DulcetMoans · 02/02/2021 08:10

Oooo I made meatloaf the other day for the first time @stuntnun - ill look through my history fir the recipe as it was pretty good!

Thanks @bestbees maybe that is the advice. Always that worry that it will make things worse though!

Jollyholibobs · 02/02/2021 08:18

Hope everyone has a better day today for those who had bad news and anxieties yesterday. Flowers The worry about grown up children certainly chimed with me. When they are happy I am happy, but when they are not it’s so hard. Mine are ok at the moment thankfully.

Have just discovered my big pot of yoghurt not my usual brand is fat free not full fat. Bought by mistake at not my usual supermarket. Hate to waste it but not sure what to do. Add cream?

Plan for today
B black coffee
L cheese, avocado, shredded and grated veg salad with oily dressing.
D Shakshouka with FLGV

Shortages here are cauliflower and Aubergine, frozen kale. But I have alternatives.

Looking forward to today’s chat. And planning a lunchtime wet run.

cheeseisthebest · 02/02/2021 08:23

Morning everyone!

I was reading online about diabetes yesterday and the food advice is awful. Its saying have fat free yoghurt, no cheese etc etc. How can they get it so wrong?
Although when I did a diabetic food group through nhs the advice was low carb but I think everyone still frightened of fat.

cheeseisthebest · 02/02/2021 08:23

Meat loaf sounds really nice. Not something I've made.

Lyrata · 02/02/2021 08:34

I’ve never made meatloaf either but it sounds good. I didn’t realise it could be done with vegetables and not... some form of carb. I think because of “loaf” I assumed bread!

Has anyone ever made Japanese/Chinese steamed eggs? Apparently you whisk together egg with stock and flavourings of your choice (e.g. soy sauce, mirin, spring onion) and put it in a pot and steam it.

I’ve ordered a steamer so I can try it. I’ll probably do more anglicised flavours - perhaps just salt or maybe a little feta.

I had a really funny stomach yesterday - not painful but vaguely nauseous all day and many trips to the loo. I kept snacking all day in the hopes that something would stop the nausea but nothing really did. So for that reason not trying to fast until lunch today.

Breakfast: coffee with cream and a tomato, cheese and olive oil salad
Lunch: is meant to be chicken and coconut curry soup but I’m not sure I’ll be able to face it. My stomach still feels weird and this meal is triggering nausea. I think the coconut milk. My ex-DP has made a low carb lasagna so I might see if I can purloin some of that.
Dinner: chicken thigh with Mediterranean vegetables

LittleMy77 · 02/02/2021 08:58

Does anyone want some bare naked noodles? I bought 3 packets without realising they have soy flour in them

Happy to give them to someone so they don’t go to waste

nowlook · 02/02/2021 09:02

Yes @Jollyholibobs A friend's mum once told me (way before I had any DC) that "as a mother, you're only ever as happy as your unhappiest child". Really stuck with me over the years.

Hope everyone has better days today.

Jollyholibobs · 02/02/2021 09:15

@nowlook how true. But it makes me reflect on what impact my mood probably has on my mother! Will make more of an effort for that to be positive.

Last time I spoke to her we had a bit of an argument about LCHF. She agrees that it is healthier than what she is currently pursuing but says she could not change at her age. I innocently, I thought, asked why not and she got rather annoyed!! It’s crazy she cooks for a relative with type 2 diabetes but continues with a very low fat WOE. It really brought home to me how ingrained in the whole population this way of thinking is. In theory she agrees that the low fat doctrine is flawed but the thought of adopting an alternative approach is a huge obstacle and she said she would just continue ‘eating healthily’.

ouchmyfeet · 02/02/2021 09:15

Thanks @StuntNun and @Justcallmecaptainobvious, I'm going to try drinking less today and see if it helps

venusandmars · 02/02/2021 09:27

@Jollyholibobs a friend of mine says 'she's only ever as happy as her unhappiest (adult) child'. Even when they are grown up, it still hurts to see them hurting.

Nice ideas for meat loaf - I'm off to look our an old recipe, also one that was wrapped in bacon.

B - coffee with cream
L - left over veg (cabbage, broccoli, leeks, few peas, cauliflower rice) with fried egg
D - salmon wrapped in prosciutto, with buttery veg

Today is veg box day, so the salmon will be with whatever selection to box throws at me. There are always mushrooms, so I'm planning mushrooms on low carb toast for breakfast tomorrow.

venusandmars · 02/02/2021 09:28

X post with nowlook Grin

nowlook · 02/02/2021 09:34

I'm gutted venus: I thought the woman was a sage! Turns out, every Tom, Dick and Harry says it Grin She's probably got all those trite inspirational quotes framed in her smallest room:

"Yesterday is history; tomorrow is a mystery; today is a gift: that's why we call it the present" Envy

nowlook · 02/02/2021 09:37

Now, did anyone else's grandmother tell them that "if you sat round the table with your friends and family and everyone put their troubles in the middle, you'd take your own back"? If they did then the whole foundation of my childhood is rocked. Rocked, I tell you.

Oneborneverydecade · 02/02/2021 09:37

@LittleMy77 thank you for the kind offer, I didn't really like them but hopefully someone will be along who does

WellityWellityWellity · 02/02/2021 09:42

Good morning all!

I may be imagining it, but I feel a bit better already. I am doing daily weigh ins, to keep me in line. Obviously no massive change as i am only on day 2, but i swear I feel more energetic already.

Started today with much water, one tea with cream. Now almost out of cream and I'll want a coffee later, so I'm saving it. Switching to chai now, which is probably less caffeiney, so maybe that will be an added side effect to this WOE.

B: boiled eggs mashed with butter and an avocado

Off to shops in a bit, for lunch and dinner supplies. Will maybe peruse the recipes on here for inspiration. I actually managed to find an aubergine recently and wanted to make low carb moussaka. I couldn't get the lamb mince! Ah well. Maybe I'll try cottage pie with celeriac topping.

StuntNun · 02/02/2021 09:51

Jolyholibobs yes add cream to your fat free yogurt. You'll find it tastes a lot less nice than the usual stuff though.

StuntNun · 02/02/2021 09:58

I've never heard of Chinese Steamed Eggs before but they sound delicious. I wonder if you can make them in an ordinary electric steamer. I have one that was bought for a huge Christmas dinner years ago that hasn't been used very much ever since. I'm fasting at the moment so food recipes look extra yummy to me right now! Grin

BIWI · 02/02/2021 09:59
@venusandmars I did give in to some 85% chocolate for pudding and some Lilt Zero. I guess I hoped it wouldn't do damage! But I think the meals have been ok overall.

Today has been:

B- FF yoghurt and mixed spice and a boiled egg (every day)
L- Sausage, mushrooms, chopped halloumi and broccoli
D- Stewed steak and veg (tomato based sauce). Yesterday was omlette with broccoli, cheese and chorizo.

I am cooking in salted butter. I am frying lunch most days which is usually some fried veg in butter, sausage if I have them, some kind of cheese. That is what I am starting to question - friend food, in butter, every day!
Don't be frightened of the fat! It's very good for you and it's what will help to you satisfied.
