Week 3 - Pre-Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp - 'full' or light?

BIWI · 26/10/2020 08:57

Morning all!

Here's The Spreadsheet as per

Hopefully you've had a good second week, and have settled down into Bootcamp ways by now, and any trace of carb flu is but a distant memory.

By now, if not already, you should be well into the switch from burning carbs to burning fat. You should be finding it much easier to go between meals without snacking, and should find your energy levels picking up, maybe even feeling like you've got more energy than you had before.

So as we start week 3, you have a choice: you can continue on Bootcamp if it's suiting you, or you can move to Bootcamp Light, which means:

  • you don't have to have three meals a day
  • you can have some fruit (berries)
  • you can have some nuts/seeds
  • you can drink some alcohol

Please not the use of the word some! This isn't carte blanche for you to go mad. Just remember, all these things will add a lot of carbs quite quickly - so it's very much in moderation.

You also need to know/remember that week 3 (and 4) is infamous for being the point at which weight loss slows - sometimes even stops - so this is another good reason to go easy when you relax things

A good compromise is to stay strictly Bootcamp during the week but Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever you choose, hope the results this morning are positive, and wishing us all good luck for the week ahead.

For those that are feeling overwhelmed by the scale of their "full" target (ie where they'd ultimately like to be opposed to where they are now), someone of here a years ago (can't remember who) gave a good piece of advice she was given, when hesitating about the commitment required, iirc correctly, for a degree/extra qualification.

Whether you do or don't do it, at the end of the day, time will pass and you will be a year older. You can choose to be part of the way along that route, or you can just stay where you are.

That sounds like something I would have said but I don’t claim it as mine it is, it’s mine mine mine Grin

All I will say is it’s true, no matter who said it.

I will also suggest a poem—oh, yes, let’s have some poetry?

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost:

^Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;^

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

^I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.^

prettyscarybird · 28/10/2020 21:52

Good poem. We cover all sorts on these thread Grin

I forgot to emphasise the key bit of the advice: if you think it's going to take too long, in a year's time, the time has gone anyway but it will still take as long. So why not just start now? Smile

NigellaAwesome · 28/10/2020 22:46

Shag I love a bit of Robert Frost, he is one of my favourite poets.

I made moussaka yesterday, but as DD is dairy intolerant I did the topping with vegan cheese, eggs and almond milk. I thought it was quite nice, although the cheese was 22g carbs per 100, so quite high. It's worth it for me though as it makes a huge difference to DD to be able to eat those meals with the rest of us. I noticed I got heartburn later, which I never get, so guess it was the 'cheese'.

About mini goals, I am 196 lbs, and one more pound lost will put me into the 13 stone something bracket. Next mini goal will be 190 lbs (86 kg)

Twit · 28/10/2020 23:17

Well, silly twit that I am, I tried to read last week's thread, skipped to the end Blush (I know, I'm sorry its been a bit of a tough week) and posted on the wrong thread. 😬
I haven't properly read this one either, but I'm determined to be more present on the future. One positive is I've crocheted myself a hat.
I've lost 3lbs so far, but my winter coat feels a little looser - even though its my period, so...yay?
I've been really, really hungry this last week, and I didn't really fast, so I have bloated a bit. Hopefully I can get back into it properly again.
Take care and drink your water!

Twit · 28/10/2020 23:20

Oh, and my overall goal is to be in the 9s, but this bootcamp I'm hoping to get into the mid 11s, but I'll be ok with late 11s. (Kind of Wink )

itsmeagainagain · 28/10/2020 23:24

@twit well down with the 3lbs loss 👏 I love crochet too and have been keeping my hands and therefore my mouth occupied in the evenings instead of mindless snacking! I’m hoping for mid 11’s this bootcamp too 😊

Summery1 · 28/10/2020 23:36

Hi BIWI, thanks for the feedback.

@Jdhshekr that is really interesting about the exercise. We started full lockdown recently, which stopped my usual swimming and cycling. So I ran last weekend (twice) on the treadmill - we are actually allowed to exercise within 5k but I find road running kills me. And I did a Shred DVD for the first time in years. - Completely different workouts for me, and my muscles did feel tender after. I'll be watching that scales with a beady eye.

@fizzfridays thanks for the recipe.
@VeryLittleHowl another sugar addict here. I don't love 85% chocolate, but it does, somehow, take away my cravings for sweets. Dont know why

Food:
B: three egg, sausage thingys. Creamy coffee X2.
L: Soup and pate
D: cod, green veg, olive oil and mayo.
Followed by greek yogurt with peanut butter, mint tea and 85% chocolate.
Exercise: walked the dog. happy dog!

DiscontentedWoman · 29/10/2020 01:50

My fathead pizza was a triumph - thanks stuntnun. It came together surprisingly quickly and I splodged it into two 5-ish inch rounds with wet hands. I added a good dusting of garlic granules to the mix along with some Italian herbs as I was mildly bothered it might taste overwhelmingly of almonds, but it didn't. I'm going to rattle off a few more tomorrow for the freezer and to use up the leftover mozzarella.

BIWI · 29/10/2020 08:27

@Twit

Sorry to hear you've had a hard week - hopefully this has been a better one?

I've been really, really hungry this last week, and I didn't really fast, so I have bloated a bit

a) if you're hungry, then you're not eating enough/enough fat
b) no need to fast, it's not part of Bootcamp so don't stress yourself out about this
c) if you're bloated, drink more water!

Do any of the long timers on here have any experience of HRT on your weight? Are you likely to see an increase when you start taking it?

poorbuthappy · 29/10/2020 08:37

Cheese lumps were lovely.
Slightly claggy (does anyone else use that word??) but totally hit the spot.
Thanks @itsmeagainagain !!

itsmeagainagain · 29/10/2020 08:54

@poorbuthappy glad you liked them! 😊

So this is an embarrassing admission but I have really been aware of how much mindless eating I usually do. I’ve realised that I am the one in the house that eats the most junk 😳😳 stuff is lasting AGES because I’m not eating it. Biscuits, crisps etc are still being eaten but I really think it was me munching my way through them how embarrassing!!

Mimosa1 · 29/10/2020 09:00

Morning everyone!

That piece of advice about time going by was from my very first boss when I was thinking of taking the 3 yr CFA exam. He's bootcamp famous! And I didn't indeed sit the exam before I changed career. Smile he was a thoroughly lovely man and a real gentleman. I think others may have been given similar advice at different times so not sure if it really was me on here some years ago after 1st DC but I've had a lovely trip down memory lane all the same Smile

I've discovered that if I take screenshots, I can save recipes into a specific photo album on my phone. It's quite easy in case this is helpful to anyone else. You just go to "all photos" then click on "share" then "albums" (if you have an iPhone). I've taken a pic of that cauliflower pizza and I'm excited to try it! Would pre-riced cauli work or do you have to grate of yourself?

The scales are moving very slowly for me, if at all. I suspect I'm drinking enough so I'm going to try very hard this week.

My next mini goal is to get under 70kg consistently, so ideally 68kg to give me some wiggle room. I'm hovering at 70.5/.6/.7 so would love to be at 68 mid end of BC. I've also taken a before pic in some jeans that are way too tight for me so will be trying them on again mid BC!

Mybestspookyname · 29/10/2020 09:15

Help! I've fallen off the wagon and can't get back on. This always seems to happen when I get close to being a 'normal' weight, and I start sabotaging myself Shock

20bloodypumpkins · 29/10/2020 09:33

Mybestspookyname

You can't do anything about what you might have consumed over the past few days, but you can do something about NOW. So what is your plan for today? What are you going to eat and drink. Have you had breakfast and if not can you make something with eggs - cheese omlette perhaps. And drink a couple of glasses of water. That would be a good start.

Then sit down and plan your food and water for the rest of the day, and for tomorrow. If possible, get rid of any biscuits, sweets, bread that might tempt you, or at least put it somewhere out of reach. Every time you feel tempted to graze or snack, have another glass of water instead.

Busy day here with a trip to the physio to squeeze in (sprained ankle which is still swollen and tender 4 weeks later).

Brunch - boiled eggs, ham, cheesy coleslaw, salad
D - more lamb casserole, broccoli, kale, mashed turnip

justanotherneighinparadise · 29/10/2020 09:37

Sorry I haven’t commented yet on this thread. I’ve been on quite a rollercoaster!!!

I was on a stall for a month having lost over a stone on Keto. So I decided to do Michael Moseley’s fast800 12 week plan and the first week I put on four pounds!!!!!!!!!! I knew it was too high sugar for me, even though I’m sure it works for many. Thankfully I got my money back, jumped straight back to my Keto plan and I’m back to my lowest weight this year. So I’ve either lost 4lbs or stayed the same lol 🙈

Lyrata · 29/10/2020 10:04

@itsmeagainagain I have had the same realisation. At my old job we had a massive sweet bowl with Celebrations in it - it was honestly huge. I always thought it was funny that everyone liked the same ones as me because all the Milky Way bars and Malteasers went first.

When I went on a diet I noticed that this ‘unusual phenomena’ stopped happening.

itsmeagainagain · 29/10/2020 10:08

@Lyrata 😆😆 so funny!! I’m glad I’m not the only one! There is an unopened box of chocolate fingers in the cupboard and also a half finished box of posh chock some friends brought round a few weeks ago when they came for a takeaway... Every time I see them I’m amazed they’re still there!! 😂 The old me would have opened the chocolate fingers that I bought ‘for the kids’ let them have a couple as an after school treat and then scoffed the rest over the course of the day by taking 5 or 6 every time I opened the cupboard 😳

NotwatchingSpooks · 29/10/2020 10:11

Morning love the poem, maybe we should have a poem a day....

For those wondering about small losses, each pound, becomes 2lbs to your knees on the stairs, as your single knee takes all the weight as you step.

Re HRT , I’ve not had any weight gain and feel much better, am sleeping, not achy and so able to exercise, no longer want to shout at strangers for breathing , saying hello, smiling , family for asking me to pass the butter...... 😀 etc, please feel free to ask any questions.

Today
Greek yogurt
L celeriac soup, with sprinkle of cheese and a slice of ham
D spicy beef, in lettuce cups, salad and homemade coleslaw

3 litres of water and 2 coffees

AWryGiraffe · 29/10/2020 10:50

Hi all, just checking in. Going to attempt the famous cheeseburger pie this week I think, though with vegetarian mince as I don't eat meat or fish.

I like the idea of interim goals too. I'm 12'3 at the moment. My interim goal is 11'7, and my overall goals is 10'7. Ideally by July as that's my rescheduled wedding. That will bring me into the healthy BMI category, and will see how I feel then!

Tonight is the day before the weekly shop arrives so it's a takeaway for my other half, and probably something from the freezer for me - spag without the Bol I think!

StuntNun · 29/10/2020 10:53

I'm full of the cold this week but managed to find Chicken and Vegetable Broth in Sainsburys that is only 2.7g carbs per 100g so I'm self-medicating with chicken soup. It's really low calorie though, only 107 cal for half the pot, so I lobbed a fair amount of butter into it to make it suitable for this way of eating. It was pretty nice and even better not to have to cook when I'm under the weather.

Lyrata · 29/10/2020 10:59

@itsmeagainagain I know! I’ve never been able to enjoy just one biscuit or chocolate - it’s always more. Especially at that old workplace, I’d find myself eating two in the kitchen and then one on the way to my desk and then two more at my desk - so nobody saw me eating five or six at once. Thinking back it was such addict behaviour.

Even when I was younger I once remember my sister trying to hide the biscuits from the weekly shop and accusing me of eating them all too quickly. (Although she would always eat all the crisp flavours I liked first because she knew she wouldn’t need to share the others, so she wasn’t purely the victim in this story).

itsmeagainagain · 29/10/2020 11:04

@Lyrata this is me exactly!!! I used to sneak food as a child too and I have no idea why! Even now as an adult I will do the same thing scoff more than people can see almost as it it doesn’t count.... this WOE is really making me see the bad habits I have and make me determined not to fall back into them. Wishing you all the success too 😊

Takingontheundead · 29/10/2020 11:54

I've just bought some size 12 jeans and active wear. Ill go home in a min and try on so they can be my new goal as i didn't have anything that i didn't fit to joined in last thread! Bit scared. My tits are huge so no chance on the tops especially

ShagMagicRiggins · 29/10/2020 11:55

That piece of advice about time going by was from my very first boss when I was thinking of taking the 3 yr CFA exam. He's bootcamp famous!

Aw damn Mimosa, here I was claiming credit. I wanna be Bootcamp Famous! Grin

Great advice, though.

itsmeagain and lyrata have made me laugh with the revelations about crap food strangely being untouched these days. Definitely an odd phenomenon. Wink

Notwatching I love the 1lb being 2lbs on stairs. It’s proper “thinking outside the box” and a wonderful NSV for the knees!

Giraffe I don’t know much about vegetable mince but am wondering if it will deliver any beefy flavour and—if not—is there some sort of cube you could crumble or paste you could squirt that would deliver a more umami sense to the fish?

Actually looking forward to your experiment without my dopey suggestions. Please let us know!

Oh, and WATER y’all!
