Keto - hair falling out

I’ve been doing keto pretty rigidly for about three months to try and tackle my grim menstrual migraines. The good news is that it has made a dramatic difference to my headaches (so I don’t want to stop it unless I have to) but the bad news is my hair is now falling out.
Has anyone else had this? Can you suggest anything I could try?

Mine did a bit too and my hair is so fine as it is I noticed it breaking even though I wasn't using any heat on it
Apparently it is one of the side effects, I thought it would be good for my hair with all the protein.
I didn't do it for long, just to drop a few for holidays and it has gone back to normal now

YES- mine did this too!!! Angry

About 3mths after I started keto it started and I'd read its very common from losing weight/keto diet. I normally lose hair when washing or brushing, but this was coming out at the root and FAR more than normal. Fortunately, I have very long, thick hair, and it didnt leave balding patches as it was just from all over. It did feel thinner though.

I think the shedding lasted a month and finally stopped. I was taking a multivitamin and had bood tests beforehand. It can sometimes be from anaemia or thyroid issues also. I stayed on keto about 3mths after the shredding and I didnt get any more issues.

Is your from all over? From the root?

PlayerOneReady · 07/08/2020 18:32

Yes - it’s definitely from the root. I did wonder about the thyroid thing. I’ve started taking iron every day, but is there anything you can do about the thyroid? Should I get it checked at the doctor? It’s good to hear yours wasn’t permanent!

And also all over!

@PlayerOneReady, my long hair comes out a lot as it is - in the shower especially. We always find loads in the carpet when hoovering. But I don't think I have patches.

I've been doing keto/LCHF for nearly two months and haven't noticed it worsening, but I was talking about hair falling out with some other mums the other day, and one mentioned that it can be linked to lack of protein in the diet.

This may seem odd when thinking about keto, but actually, for me it would be possible. I struggle to eat 'enough' protein, not being a massive meat-eater, and of course keto is about high fat more than high protein (too much protein can kick one out of ketosis anyway). So I'm trying to up my protein to what would be considered normal/healthy levels, for general health, but also with this in mind.

This could be completely irrelevant to you, especially if you're eating plenty of meat, but just in case you're more of an eggs-and-cheese-and-a-bit-of-fish keto-er, I thought I'd share.

Hope it sorts itself out.

Thanks so much Eggbound - any suggestion appreciated. I don’t think this is my problem as I do have some meat most days, but I’ll try upping it - can’t hurt can it Smile

Have you tried introducing some of the ''good'' carbs that are good for women. Beetroot, Celery in limited amounts of course. I know that beetroot is a root though... And maybe take liquorice root capsules and Yam root capsules if you can afford them.

@PlayerOneReady

this might be helpful

The other thing - how low are you keeping your carbs if you're doing keto? It might be worth upping them for a little - obviously not too much, especially if the headaches come back.

PlayerOneReady · 16/08/2020 17:31

Thanks so much @BIWI - that is really informative and really reassuring.
Yes I was thinking maybe I’d add in some low GI carbs like brown rice gradually.
Thank you so much for your help!

Oh and PS my carbs are pretty low (I think) less than 30g a day.
