We've reached the end of the Low Carb Bootcamp so how did you do overall? Add your weigh-in to the Spreadsheet and let us know your plans. Would you like to keep losing weight over the coming week and months? Are you thinking about giving weight maintenance a go? Have you considered introducing intermittent fasting? This thread will continue until the next Bootcamp starts so there will be plenty of support for you.

(((hugs))) cheeries. It's horrible isn't it. Not just those evil turnips. I'm not a crier and I've sobbed heaps too. Prayers for inner peace for you and all fellow BCers x

BrassicaBabe · 01/05/2020 20:13

Rats. Can't even spell cherries

... need to be a bit more consistent as am just STS endlessly but will have some wine this weekend. Probably in about 26 minutes in fact.

Loving the timestamp associated with the intent on drinking statement. Grin

Drinking in general...

Most of you know I’ve had my issues with alcohol abuse. Things are much, much better for me now.

But it occurs to me that a lockdown environment is absolutely perfect to enhance opportunities, as in many families both adults are home full time to look after children, there are no pick ups and drop offs to stay sober for, so day drinking—especially in the first 4 weeks for much of the country—becomes inciting and pleasurable, like the cheeky white one sips at lunchtime on holiday.

Luckily, I’m now drinking for pleasure rather than for an emotional crutch. That’s HUGE progress for me. But I have found myself, a few times, day drinking in the holiday mode or—worse—out of sheer fucking boredom.

It’s just something I’ve been thinking about and wondered if anyone else was. It’s certainly not good for this way of eating to be increasing alcohol intake, and it’s certainly not great for general health. And I’m certainly not judging anyone. I don’t have a leg to stand on, even if I did it would be hollow.

If anyone else is having a moment about this, feel free to chime in and say howdy.

ShagMeRiggins · 01/05/2020 20:22

Aren’t turnips virtually paramount to swedes? Not bad BC wise, are they?

Let me comfort you, cheeries

ShagMeRiggins · 01/05/2020 20:23

Flowers for moussaka

AthelstaneTheUnready · 01/05/2020 20:28

I have ishoos, Shag. Sometimes I'm on top of them (no booze for two months!); sometimes I'm not and crack something open mid-afternoon (not very often these days though).

Most definitely linked to stress. Not drinking is a breeze when life is a breeze. Not drinking is a breeze when I've not been drinking for a while.

Drinking is a pig when I get into a habit - finish work, train travel, free evening, had an argument, etc. I find it fiendishly difficult to break those habit ones.

I know not everyone experiences this, but I find it so easy - like your boredom drink - to have a glass or three of wine as a default if there's nothing else going on. Am trying very hard still to see drinking as a treat, not as an activity.

ilovecherries · 01/05/2020 20:45

I quite like the idea of cheeries. It’s aspirational at least!

Since 31 December 2016, I have had one drink. I rarely give it a thought. 6 weeks into lockdown, and if we had any in the house I’d be sucking it through a sweaty sock. Fortunately as we can’t do our own shopping just now, we are unlikely to be able to get any, so temptation is being kept out of my way. At the moment, can’t even remember the reason I bothered stopping, never mind the benefits.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 01/05/2020 20:49

That's a shame, Cheeries, I was going to ask what prompted you.

I've found once I've stopped it's easy and I don't think. It's the on-off I find really difficult.

ilovecherries · 01/05/2020 20:55

It was more driven by DH if I’m honest. He felt he was drinking a bit to much, too often and there’s addiction issues in his family. He decided to do dry January in 2017 and to support him, I said I would as well. After the 31 days we decided we’d do 100 days, and by that time it just seemed pointless to start again. We have never said it was forever, but once the habit was broken it just seemed a bit pointless. Have never missed it till now. I think I just want the anaesthetic affect!

ilovecherries · 01/05/2020 20:55

Ignore all grammatical errors!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 01/05/2020 21:05

Well, that's hammer on the nail - all my drinking desires come from "not wanting to be here/doing this anymore".

An anaesthetic/oblivion thing. Which written down, does not sound so fantastic really. Grin

Am dead impressed you both changed your views. And like this WOE, a reminder to see if I can't stop and think what is really bothering me when I crave the wine, crisps, etc.

SophieRay · 01/05/2020 22:51

So is red wine ok as it's 2.6% carbs or not because it's alcohol?? Confused

ShagMeRiggins · 01/05/2020 22:53

The drink talk is useful I think. Gets us all at least considering it, in the same way we consider food.

I used to mock this word but now appreciate it—mindful.

As stated, not judging anyone. Thinking in terms of how I want to care for myself and what I want to do for body, health, life, etc.

Currently sipping a G&T while playing jackbox.tv with the husband and Hormoaners. Great fun. They all make me laugh. That’s the best thing in life sometimes. Just laughing.

Happy Friday, y’all.

Ps—weighed in today and still Overweight. Yay!!!

ShagMeRiggins · 01/05/2020 23:02

SophieRay always remember that even if you’re drinking lower carb alcohol, your body will “burn” that first, the get to the fat. So whatever alcohol is consumed, it’s a hindrance to weight loss.

As for red wine, it’s slightly more carb than white, and the carb-free best is vodka/soda or any other clear spirit (gin, whisky).

Some prefer vodka or gin with slimline tonic, which is fine, but remember the idea of not using artificial sweeteners or fizzy drinks as a general guideline for this way of eating.

I take my vodka or gin with slim, I’m slowly working my way to soda but don’t want to be hypocritical with my advice. Just being honest.

In my experience, two vodka slims gives me the same pleasure as an entire bottle of red used to. That might just be me.

SophieRay · 02/05/2020 09:39

Thank you Shag I think it's that bit about burning through the alcohol before the fat that I need to remember - if I wasn't drinking the alcohol I would therefore be losing weight quicker which is what I want really. I drink red wine because I enjoy red wine, I take on board about the spirits but I feel if I moved on to say vodka, which I can drink but isn't something I get enjoyment out of drinking - I'd be drinking it just to get alcohol in me and not because I'm drinking it because I enjoy the drink if that makes sense??

I have one bottle of red left which I'll consume over the weekend and then I think I'll quit again, like I said before I think it makes me anxious anyway and I definitely don't sleep as well. I think I need to change my evening routine - I use sitting down with a drink to mark the end of the day, like a treat for getting through it - I need to change that routine really.

Congrats on still being overweight Smile

DietChic · 02/05/2020 09:42

Much enjoyable pork scratching chat - DH went off to the supermarket yesterday but couldn’t find the salt and vinegar ones but got the crunch ones which were great! I am also going to order those cheese snacks too!

This will help a lot!

I think I agree that being “mindful” of drinking is a good thing. It’s fun and delicious but when it stops being fun, then best not to drink. And I hate waking up in the night. My sleep is precious!

I stick to under 14 units a week and usually come in about 10 - mix of G&T and white wine. I have been a much heavier drinker and felt rough for it before but abstinence has reset my reasons for drinking for now.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/05/2020 10:02

Amen to hating waking up in the night.

I can live with periods of having a few drinks between about 5 and 7pm, but I stop by that time and go really heavy on the water. I HATE that hot, sweaty, poisoned, thirsty feeling you wake up with if you've had a drink just before bed, so just don't drink anywhere near bedtime.

Progress, progress... I've regained a lb of my 4 lost, but I washed my jeans yesterday and although they're a bit bulgy this morning, it wasn't a struggle to zip them up!

Did the big fortnightly shop last night, and bugger me, prices have gone up Shock. Nonetheless, have the most gorgeous fatty red steak for tonight - haven't had steak in a long time!

I will have earned it too - two asparagus trenches to dig out, one potato bed, and one runner bean patch. I don't even like digging particularly... Grin

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 02/05/2020 10:43

Hi everyone. I know ive been quiet.
I have pleurisy.

On a brighter note I've had no appetite so I'm another 5lb down

ilovecherries · 02/05/2020 12:57

Oh no, carby Sad. Was that a covid complication or very shit luck? Are you feeling any better?

ilovecherries · 02/05/2020 13:01

I ordered another veg box from somewhere else today and begged them not to put turnip or potatoes in, even if that meant I got less. It’s currently decontaminating in the sun, and is much better: spinach, broccoli, celery, lettuce, cucumber and a brown bag of peas in their pods. Which I know isn’t LC but a)it’s green b) it’s not a turnip c) bizarrely makes me feel hopeful.

ilovecherries · 02/05/2020 13:02

Oh, and a basil plant! I am so missing fresh herbs.

StuntNun · 02/05/2020 13:31

These are the salt and vinegar pork scratchings I get from Sainsburys.

Just very shit luck.
I'm still really run down, and in lot of pain, but I'm managing.

DietChic · 02/05/2020 14:20

Thank you so much for that pic Stuntnun - I’ve just ordered a multipack from Amazon.

DH can never find anything I need on a shop yet insists on doing it. Apparently there were no maris Pipers either (for him, obviously) or walnuts. Don’t believe a word but no point in saying! Redcurrant jelly as a sub for mint sauce. I am LOW SUGAR DAMNIT! And no, peanuts are NOT the same as macadamias carb wise.

Anyway. Ahem. Apart from that, nothing to complain about otherwise.

I will report back - I’m very excited about them!
