Jan '20 - Week 2 Low Carb Bootcamp - How did you do?

We've already seen some fab results, especially from those who started early. We do expect a big variation in the first weigh in. Some of you will have lost several pounds, some a more modest loss. Others won't have lost anything yet either because some healing is needed before weight loss begins in earnest, or because they didn't quite manage to stick to the rules during the first week.

So please check in with us to reflect on how your first week has gone. Try not to compare yourself to others because weight loss is a very individual thing. If you have any concerns about your progress then please do ask. We have had thousands of people through Bootcamp so make use of that collective experience.

Add your weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or tag the rather wonderful ShagMeRiggins with your weigh-in if you can't access the spreadsheet yourself. If you're only just starting then please tag the very lovely AthelstaneTheUnready to be added to the spreadsheet. And to anybody that suspected they couldn't lose weight while eating lots of lovely food, and without feeling hungry... I hope you enjoyed being proved wrong!

So lunch today was a bowl of my first ever cauliflower/bone broth/cheese soup and it was heavenly!!! I also had half a celery, chunky courgette, large leek & small onion in there so max vege, max fat & max flavour.

Even better I have 3 more portions left so lunches for a few days are sorted.

I am loving this WOE - I still have "this is bloody insane" & "naughty naughty" chirping away in the back of my mind but they are slowly drowning in butter fading.

MrsB good job in the garden - sounds very satisfying & theraputic.

TheClitterati · 22/01/2020 14:20

Have you all watched Fat Heads? It is on Your Tube - I watched half last night & then fell asleep - will watch the 2nd half tonight. The guy who made it was interviewed on a LowCarbHighFat podcast is was listening to when I was looking for the mysteriously mislaid keys on Sunday - yes I do that now. It takes a while to get to the LC bit, but covers the whole history of "healthy eating/balanced diet" ethos of recent decades and its failure too.

It is on Prime I think, or you can watch on YT - my phone connects YT to my TV which is great for wathing things like this:

I realised a while ago that nearly all shop bought seasoning mixes contain sugar- I was always flinging them on chicken wings, pork belly etc., why do manufacturers thing we need 5% brown sugar?? On chicken???
So now I make my own- No added sugar!

To make Salt and Chilli wings or to spice up drumsticks, I use an empty spice container to make up my own mix, and pierce the lid so that I can sprinkle it. - 10g white pepper, 10g salt,3g garlic granules, 10g cayenne. ( this is quite hot- start with 5g, if unsure!
I always season my FLGV with garlic and white pepper, so made up a skake for that too- n salt as I use Kerrygold, which adds plenty of saltyness.
Well done Bert, that must have been amazing!
Prettybird, I hope you get a cloud free day in Skye- I’ve been a few time ( I love Plockton too), but I’ve never seen the mountains.

Struggling today for some reason, really want cake or a warm squidgy naan bread 🙈

Won't be caving as am in the zone, but it's hard.

Going to order a Turkish takeaway and have chicken shish, hallumi and a big salad (no pomegranate dressing!). Will feel a bit naughty and hopefully get my head back in the game 💪🏼

bibliomania · 22/01/2020 15:23

I had a near miss at the canteen at work today, moleeye. I won't say what it was so as not to trigger anyone/myself. I had brought in a packed lunch so I shouldn't even have gone in there.

MaureenMLove · 22/01/2020 15:37

I've not had a good week. It was my birthday on Monday and I'm having to live with my mum for 2 weeks, since moving out of the family home. I lost well last week, when I was still at home, but this week I've put 2 lb back on already. Disappointed, but determined to stick to it as closely as possible until I move into my new home on 1st Feb.

I intend to stick with the boot camp for a couple more weeks, after I move, keep up with the running and get these pounds off, as well as the emotional crap that's been with me for 18 months.

MrsBertBibby · 22/01/2020 15:39

That sounds tough Maureen.

Harveywoo · 22/01/2020 15:44

Feeling very tired and a bit headachey today so taking a break from WAH to rest and drink lots, so naturally ended up in here Smile.
B: mushroom, one egg, spinach fried in butter, tea with almond milk
L: salmon and egg fish cakes with courgette and baby corn
D: thinking a coconut milk based veggie stir fry/ soup. Adding rice for the rest of the family.
Can I get away with sesame oil or maybe a spoon of it butter to make it more satay like on bootcamp? And where do we stand in quorn “chicken” pieces as an occasional protein, veggie son loves it.

MrsBertBibby · 22/01/2020 15:46

B: some nibbles of cheese and basil tofu
L: omelette with mushy spinach and cheese
D: I have a celeriac boulangere ready to bake, but will also make a cauliflower cheese in a bit, do one of them.

MrsBertBibby · 22/01/2020 15:47

Mushies. Not mushy spinach!

Notwatchingtvtoday · 22/01/2020 15:49

Hi Hagbeth sorry about the cream, I love it too but it definitely stalls my weight loss.

Very damp and dismal day here, not salad weather 😀

B total Greek yogurt
L scrambled eggs and 1/2 avocado
D shepherds pie with celaric topping

3 litres water ....

StuntNun · 22/01/2020 19:00

Waspfig pins and needles can be due to magnesium deficiency. Magnesium stores are depleted during pregnancy and breastfeeding so a possible issue for you. Also the form of magnesium used in most supplements isn't very bioavailable. I prefer magnesium glycinatee* which I take for pins and needles/muscle cramps and insomnia.

Stock cubes and liquid vary in terms of carb content so check labels. The best way I've found to thicken sauces and stews is grated swede which forms a lovely base when cooked for a long time.

MonaChopsis · 22/01/2020 19:19

That's interesting StuntNun, do you have to grate cooked swede or do you put it in raw? And, equally important, can fussy children taste it in there?!

Back on plan today, creamy scrambled eggs and butter fried mushrooms for breakfast, Greek yoghurt with raspberries and chia seeds for lunch, courgetti with a smoked salmon and cream cheese sauce for dinner. Hoping to lose my conference weight in short order!! Really need to drink more today as haven't focused on this enough.

waspfig · 22/01/2020 19:27

Thanks @StuntNun that is something to look at for me then. I've read it's less effective to take supplements than get vitamins from food.

Great tip for the swede thanks. I went with cream sauce again this time anyway as the turkey needed some added fat but will use that trick in future.

Think I must've eaten lots of salty food yesterday as I was soooo thirsty through the night. So I aced the water today - at least 4L plus a couple of herbal teas.

MsAwesomeDragon · 22/01/2020 19:30

I've had a good day today.
Yogurt for breakfast (ate this at school break time, wasn't hungry before work)
Creamy mushroom soup (Morrison's the best mushroom soup is delicious and only 2.7g carbs per 100g) for lunch.
Babybel and pepperami for snack
Broccoli Bolognese for dinner, with tons of cheese (last night's leftovers)

There were biscuits and stollen in the staff room today as people are trying to use up their Christmas stash by bringing it to share at work. It is very difficult to avoid eating it, but I resisted!

Rayna37 · 22/01/2020 19:55

B: Greek yogurt after 30 mins swim (should have been boiled eggs, but forgot last night to prep breakfast to eat at work, so just increased the yogurt portion I would have had at lunch)
L: chicken Caesar salad, babybel
D: pesto chicken and frozen green beans caked in the oven, sautéed spring greens with butter
half a 25g bar of 85% dark chocolate

Very good at water this week.

ilovecherries · 22/01/2020 19:59

I’m still full of the cold AND have earache, so a bit sorry for myself. On the plus side, I’m now another pound down since Monday.

Doilooklikeatourist · 22/01/2020 20:04

I’ve still got a cold and earache too , ( apparently this cold bug lasts a month , so be warned ) @ilovecherries
B 2 boiled eggs mayonnaise
L homemade celariac and cauliflower soup with grated cheddar and cream
D home baked ham , buttery greens
Lots and lots of water

DiscontentedWoman · 22/01/2020 20:07

Woke up with a headache.
B. Eggs
L. Subway Turkey and bacon salad and added avocado oil
D. Gravadlax, cheese. Not really v.hungry tbh

Doilooklikeatourist · 22/01/2020 20:14

You can thicken sauce ( slightly , a fine gravy type , not cheese sauce thick )
Is to add small cubes of cold butter to a boiling sauce , whisk like mad and it will form an emulsion , making a much richer , and more filling ( ie fatty ) sauce / gravy / jus

StuntNun · 22/01/2020 20:39

Mona I let the swede cook in the sauce but I mainly use it in the slow cooker so it has plenty of time to cook. Obviously you couldn't use it to thicken a gravy.

Summery1 · 22/01/2020 22:11

B: eggs, bacon, hollandaise, tomato, mushrooms. Creamy coffee.
L: Chicken, coleslaw, leaves+, pickled artichoke.
D: HM stock with cream HM crackling!
S: greek yogurt with spoon of peanut butter. 25g of 85% chocolate.

Summery1 · 22/01/2020 22:15

I'm loving these energy levels though! Swimming and running feels great.
Big NSVs!

TerpsichoreanMuse · 23/01/2020 05:42

Lost 2.4lb last week which is good as I'm short and fairly close to goal too. Puts me at 9st 5.9lb, goal is 8st 7lb.

Calves' liver and roasted cauliflower tonight if I'm up for it. Will almost certainly make chicken and mushroom soup for lunch. Breaskfast is always just coffee and almond milk.

Came down with a cold yesterday, so may miss CrossFit, which would make it just two sessions this week.
