Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - at last the finishing line!

BIWI · 22/07/2019 08:23

Isn't 10 weeks a long time!

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness is here one last time

Although this is the last official weigh-in, this thread will stay up for general chat/support until the next Bootcamp - probably in October.

I hope everyone has a good 'final' result.

Every Bootcamp is different, but this one has, I have to say, been remarkably well behaved Grin. I've lost the Big Stick somewhere in the back of a cupboard!

While I know you're all here and reading because I know people don't read all the posts if you want to take the opportunity to meet @ShagMeRiggins (and me) for a lighthearted Bootcamp style & beauty event probably with gin thrown in for good measure send me a PM!

Yes - Truvia is a brand name for Stevia. DH and I were delighted to discover a chocolatier in Bruges that made a range of their chocolates with stevia instead of sugar. Both of us had terrible digestive 'discomfort' after eating some of those!

I googled it afterwards and it is a known side effect, although one that few people talk about, strangely.

From webmd.com:

Stevia and chemicals contained in stevia, including stevioside and rebaudioside A, are LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth as a sweetener in foods. Rebaudioside A has generally recognized as safe (GRAS) status in the U.S. for use as a sweetener for foods. Stevioside has been safely used in research in doses of up to 1500 mg daily for 2 years.

Some people who take stevia or stevioside can experience bloating or nausea. Other people have reported feelings of dizziness, muscle pain, and numbness

Special Precautions & Warnings:

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking stevia if you are pregnant or breast feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

Allergy to ragweed and related plants: Stevia is in the Asteraceae/Compositae plant family. This family includes ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, daisies, and many other plants. In theory, people who are sensitive to ragweed and related plants may also be sensitive to stevia.

Diabetes: Some developing research suggests that some of the chemicals contained in stevia might lower blood sugar levels and could interfere with blood sugar control. However, other research disagrees. If you have diabetes and take stevia or any of the sweeteners it contains, monitor your blood sugar closely and report your findings to your healthcare provider.

Low blood pressure: There is some evidence, though not conclusive, that some of the chemicals in stevia can lower blood pressure. There is a concern that these chemicals might cause blood pressure to drop too low in people who have low blood pressure. Get your healthcare provider's advice before taking stevia or the sweeteners it contains, if you have low blood pressure.

Lithium interacts with STEVIA

Medications for diabetes (Antidiabetes drugs) interacts with STEVIA

Reading that cauli is in short supply made it even more attractive!

There are some great meal ideas on here. THank-you.

Coffee with cream

SittingontheSidelines · 19/08/2019 14:12

Got a lovely one today. Small but perfectly formed Cauliflower that is.

Just lunched on fried eggs with cheese on. Good and filling.

Tonight is salmon with aforementioned cauliflower and FGV. Followed with yogurt and a couple of chopped up strawberries.

SittingontheSidelines · 19/08/2019 14:13

And thank you @1Wildheartsease

VeryLittleOwl · 19/08/2019 14:20

I finally got into an M&S when I took my mother down to the airport on Friday - those rollito things are a bit moreish, aren't they? Thanks to some deliberate bad decisions (yes, M&S chocolate covered butter toffee popcorn, I'm looking at you...) I put 4lbs on between Tuesday morning and Saturday morning, got back on the wagon on Saturday, 2lbs off already, hopefully the rest will go this week.

venusandmars · 19/08/2019 15:23

Had a long train journey and was very happy to find an M&S salad that didn't include staple carbs (so no wheat / cous-cous/ rice / potato salad).

The M&S Bang Bang Chicken salad is delicious. It has 3.8g carb per 100g (much of which is sugar in the dressing) and therefore about 10g carb in total. But it is delicious. Lemongrass and nuts in the salad, along with lots of green stuff and red cabbage.

Interesting about the stevia. I have a small pack of stevia / erythritol mix which has lasted me a year - I use it for the very occasional pudding such as yesterday's delicious vanilla panna cotta (visit to PILs). I use less and less as time goes on, having almost completely lost the enjoyment for anything sweet. dh rejected my rhubarb fool on Friday. To be fair it was just rhubarb, a scaping of orange rind, grated ginger and cream. I thought it was the more delicious vegetable pudding ever, his opinion was not the same Grin

m0therofdragons · 19/08/2019 19:42

I love M&S on this woe. My brain is fully focused and I managed a 5k run after work this evening followed by stir fry veg and pork.

8Track · 19/08/2019 21:01

I've just made a bootcamp cauli cheese (with sprouts too!) for the first time ever. Smells delish and way less faff than a roux.

I hope it tastes as good!!

BrassicaBabe · 20/08/2019 17:26

I left the FB LC group too BIWI. I couldn't take the...ummm, not sure...any of the fluff and noise 🤣

Aren't carbs addictive?! Once I cheat they seem to claw me in and I face plant into a massive down fall. This one lasted about 10 days Confused

Anyway, back to it!

Some great losses above. Well done folks at a difficult time of year. I've screen grabbed a couple of the recently posted recipes. The pimped cauliflower cheese looks particle good. (Married to a cauliflower farmer!! Grin)

1Wildheartsease · 20/08/2019 17:46

Now that is a cunning way to corner the cauliflower market Brassicababe! You might find you have an unusually large number of LC friends this year :)

B: scrambled eggs, and coffee and cream

water

L2 baby bels and spinach
Water

Dinner: Hallumi curry (with lots of cauliflower in it) and buttered cabbage.
tea
Water

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/08/2019 17:52

Can I join please just for some moral support as I know it is the end of this boot camp. I need to start right away though as weighed myself and I weigh more now than when I had my last baby 3 years ago. Went to a wedding at the weekend and it was awful - couldn't find anything to wear and hid away from all the photographers. I just need to start now as I seem to be putting on a frightening amount of weight very quickly.

I previously lost weight for my wedding by following what I realise was a sort of low carb/keto devised system of my own. I only needed to lose about 20 lbs but it was very successful!

Have decided to follow a keto plan and started today. I ideally want to lose 5 stone

Sorry for the mad brain dump but just needed to get it out!

ValancyRedfern · 20/08/2019 19:10

Hi Goblin. I'm starting afresh today as well. Managed a low carb tea then fully on the wagon tomorrow! Good luck!

BIWI · 20/08/2019 19:12

@Gobbolinothewitchscat you're very welcome! Make sure you've read Bootcamp rules (one of the tabs on the spreadsheet that's linked to at the top of this thread)

Obviously any questions, just shout Smile

1Wildheartsease · 20/08/2019 19:17

Hi Goblin - I'm here following the plan between bootcamps as this is long-term for me. It is great -much more fun than a diet -and the company is really good too.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 20/08/2019 20:54

Hi all and thank you for all the info on stevia, I felt so awful after it that I just threw it out.
Much better day today, am busy with work this week , following rules, but will get back to proper boot camp in September.

8Track · 20/08/2019 21:15

Hey Gobbolino, I've only just started too - it sounds like we might be coming from a similar place. I am planning to lose just over 3 stones. I'm a week in so far and highly recommend this WOE - I'm finding it so much less restrictive than every "diet" I've been on before.

Also I can report the bootcamp cauli cheese was bloody amazing!

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 20/08/2019 22:04

Thanks for the welcome. I'm already feeling a lot more positive after just a day of starting. This will have to be a way of life for me as I can't go back to eating sugar and carbs in the way I have in the last two years.

Will have a good look at the rules and then will be ready when the next bootcamp kicks off as hopefully I will have had a few weeks to get used to eating like this

m0therofdragons · 21/08/2019 00:06

I'm looking forward to trying the cauliflower cheese recipe on here - thanks for sharing!

Salmon and stir fry veg for dinner tonight was lovely and I just added noodles for dh.

My running friends (the ones who drag me out) are all on holiday so I'm pretty pleased with myself as I did 5k yesterday and then a 10k today. I'm definitely feeling it so might not be able to move in the morning!

I'm not a runner at all but I don't hate it and have seen how quickly I've improved week on week. I can see I'm more toned too so the benefits are convincing me to keep going. I'm probably more boot camp lite now but I know the rules I need to stick to. Before boot camp I had no moderation skills or willpower but now I can have 1 biscuit then not spend the next hour obsessing over having another before I finally give in and have it. I did have a biscuit today and that was it, it was nice and enough. Not something I do everyday. I'm hoping to lose another 7lbs but I'm hoping that lite plus running will be enough. If not I'll get stricter.

VeryLittleOwl · 21/08/2019 07:21

Back down to where I was before Mum's visit :) Onwards and downwards!

Welcome, Gobbolino :)

BIWI · 21/08/2019 09:11

FFS. I'm now being slagged off on Reddit for how I do Bootcamp as well.

Makes me wonder why I bother.

BIWI · 21/08/2019 09:15

Sorry. Ignore me. That was a self-indulgent post. I know some people don't like it, and I've posted about it before. Must remember I can never please everyone Smile

As you were ...

Married to a cauliflower farmer!! )
So jealous, and it does explain your name.

@1Wildheartsease I read that as drinking cream water and spinach water. Gave me momentary pause for thought.

@BIWI no idea what Reddit is, excuse my ignorance, but you have helped so many people and in such a clear non judgemental way. It would be a much poorer MN without you. (Not self indulgent, but even if it was we all do that on here at times).

1Wildheartsease · 21/08/2019 09:44

It is hard to see what they can criticise BIWI.
They really must be struggling to find subjects for venom.

I am very grateful to you - and so is my family :)
The longer you have gone on with this - the more people you've helped. We then spread the word further. (I lent out a book on this way of eating just last night.)

ShagMeRiggins : cream and spinach water sound quite interesting actually!
