Week 5 - So-called 'summer' low carb Bootcamp - a soggy start!

Morning all.

Here's the spreadsheet

Hopefully we will all have successfully navigated the dreaded weeks 3 and 4, and can move seamlessly into week 5, where the scales should be set to be kind to us from now on. The rate of loss will be slower from here on, but a weekly loss of 1-2lbs should be achievable.

I have an interesting week, as our kitchen extension gets underway. At the same time, I have family visiting from Canada, so providing for them is going to be interesting! I suspect we'll be visiting a lot of local hostelries over the next 3 days Grin

Anyway, good luck everyone, and hope this is a good week for us all.

mother 1lb to go until target? That's exciting!

m0therofdragons · 15/06/2019 10:37

@IStillMissBlockbuster haha no I wish, I had a mini target for before family party. They're all really skinny size 6-8 so I'll still be the fat curvy one. I was hoping to be 9st 10 for the party. I want to be 9st 4lbs.

MrsBertBibby · 15/06/2019 10:48

Finally dropped below Monday's weight! Yay! Not been doing the best with water this week so pleased.

6 pounds to go and I am back to where I was last summer, at 12 6. Hoping I can manage that by the end of boot camp. And then shed some more over the summer, although there will be carb backsliding. Keeping our kids fed on holiday is hard enough without managing full on vegetarian low carbing for me.

Good luck Nigella! will you be in hospital long?

How's the building going, BIWI?

BIWI · 15/06/2019 13:50

@MumbleLumble I'm actually in favour of IF. I've been reading a lot about it, especially Dr Michael Mosley's work, and I think it's a really interesting idea.

For me, it means I simply don't eat breakfast. Which means that as I've generally finished my evening meal by 8.30pm, I then don't eat again before 12.30pm the next day - which is very doable if your appetite is suppressed through low carbing. It has the double advantage of keeping your daily calories lower as well.

In addition, I found this book Breakfast is a dangerous meal really interesting too. Basically the author, Dr Terence Kealy, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes - and he started monitoring his blood sugar during the day. He found that it rose much higher after breakfast than any other meal - regardless of what he ate.

So yes, if you feel you can manage to drop a meal, or move to TRE (time-restricted eating) then there's a lot of science to support its benefits.

@MrsBertBibby - building is going surprisingly well, thank you! Despite losing a day to the rain, the shed has now been completely demolished, and trenches dug for concrete to be poured for the foundations, which will hopefully happen on Monday.

The only issue we've encountered is that when the shed was removed, it transpires that our next door neighbour's extension (which didn't adjoin our shed) hasn't been properly rendered. Although there was a gap between their wall and the shed wall, they obviously couldn't reach to render it, so it's fairly exposed breeze blocks, which have a lot of holes in them. Our shed was there first, so when the extension was built, and for some reason they didn't build up to the party wall, the builders must have decided it wasn't a problem. My neighbour - who we get on very well with, thankfully, is still trying to decide what he wants to do - but he's going to have to make a decision soon, as the new walls will be going up very shortly, and we really don't want him to delay the build.

We still have full use of our old kitchen at the moment - probably will have for the next week - so although everything is emptied out of it, it does mean I can still go in and cook properly. Not really looking forward to having to camp out in the living room when that's gone!

Nando's current menu has some good options for this WOE. I've just had four skin-on chicken thighs with a mixed leaf salad and tenderstem broccoli for my sides. Added olive oil to the salad and broccoli as I had no idea about the carb content of the salad dressings.

m0therofdragons · 15/06/2019 17:26

Well, disastrous day. Was fine until lunchtime when I ate 4 finger rolls and some Swiss roll cake. I "needed" carbs but was unlike me. Anyway, all became clear when the migraine hit. Have slept until now and am drinking tea (tea and carbs are how I distinguish between tummy bug and migraine). Will allow today and let myself recover then back to normal tomorrow. May push me off target but I'm not going to get annoyed as life happens and I'm more good than I am bad!

BIWI · 15/06/2019 19:04

Sorry to hear you're suffering @m0therofdragons Sad

I have only ever suffered from migraines in one period of my life - when I was pregnant with DS1 - and I really wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy.

Just my food diary. Feel free to skip.Smile
B: green omelette (avocado) sausage tomato mushrooms
L: chicken, creamy mushroom sauce, greens.
D: dull chicken salad with olive oil.
Snack: pork scratching and dark chocolate. (Maybe too much Blush)

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/06/2019 02:00

Food diary just for fun. I never bother doing this but why not:

B: sausage, bacon, tomato. After a fasted run of 6km.
L: nothing really, just picking cheese, a piece of bacon
D: saltimbocca with buttery marsala sauce and buttery spinach. Low fat cut of meat so I really laid on the butter!
After D: gin with soda

readyforsunshine · 16/06/2019 07:47

Have a lovely time pizza!
Bad day for me, the last busy day of a super hectic week. Started the day starving- no eggs, bacon, yoghurt- had 2 pieces of toast & what’s more didnt particularly enjoy it as it was slightly burnt!
Lunch was a banana in the run, I grabbed a few pieces of cold chicken before dashing back out to work at 5ish then dd & I got a kebab when we’d finished our job at about 10.30. I pinched a few of her chips too.
Back to it today I hope although the fridge is still empty. No groceries until tomo st the earliest.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/06/2019 11:37

I'm sooooooo hungover. Went to a 90s indie night last night with some friends, had a fantastic time, and got really drunk.

Sorry BIWI. I await the big stick.

SittingontheSidelines · 16/06/2019 12:12

I came on to ask for the big stick. Life's a bit crap in places at the moment and it's accompanied by strong food cravings. I have managed not to go off plan but I am way overeating. Not filling up at all, ie not managing to numb the anxiety and worry with food. Any way, caught up with the thread before posting and thanks to you lovely lot am already feeling less hungry and more positive. I know I'm not over it, I just need to remember to come here and not avoid the thread like I was doing yesterday and earlier today.

@Summery1 Just my food diary. Feel free to skip. I love reading the food diaries.

@MrsTerryPratchett that sounds lovely.

BIWI · 16/06/2019 12:30

But @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal did you have a good time?! Sounds like your hangover is enough of a Big Stick! Grin

@SittingontheSidelines doesn't sound like the stick would be very helpful for you either Sad. Good on you for recognising that it's emotional eating though, and glad you're feeling a bit more positive

This might be helpful, about how to deal with emotional eating

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 16/06/2019 12:45

I had a fantastic time, thank you BIWI! Worth the hangover

SittingontheSidelines · 16/06/2019 13:43

Thank you @BIWI that is interesting. .

MumbleLumble · 16/06/2019 17:11

@BIWI thank you, I came across an article and have looked into IF a bit more. I find the science behind it interesting and It totally makes sense. I normally have dinner at 6/6.30 and never snack after dinner. Most days I find I'm fine without breakfast so I feel like it's something that could work for me.

I've never listed my food before but this is today...
Brunch was sausage, bacon, egg, spinach and mushroom. Dinner will be Tuna steak with roasted broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.

BIWI · 16/06/2019 17:49

Have no idea how much longer we'll have access to our kitchen, so I did some batch cooking yesterday. I was very excited to see that Waitrose stock frozen celeriac (don't normally shop there), so I made the tartiflette recipe that I posted up the thread.

It was perfect, as the bag of celeriac is 500g which is just what the recipe calls for.

Here's a photo of it - a tad too brown on top, but hopefully will keep it nice and crispy and tasty.

If I'm feeling a bit woozy and spaced out, is that not enough fat or not enough salt? Can't remember.

Summery1 · 16/06/2019 18:41

I was given a tip to quickly swallow a half teaspoon of salt with water. If it's salt it will resolve quickly!

Almahart · 16/06/2019 18:44

Ooh that looks lovely BIWI

Greebo I’m so glad you had a good time

I’m going to draw a veil over my camping weekend.....

It’s really interesting hearing your thoughts about boot camp BIWI. I enjoy the community on this thread too - I’ve been around since 2006 and I do miss kind of bumping into people across the board

Interesting how many people start then stop. The first time I tried boot camp I laste two days. I just couldn’t get my head round what I would eat without carbs - especially for breakfast. I just couldn’t manage the jump

The second time I did it pretty strictly for all ten weeks but I did have horrendous carb flu at the beginning

I knew I wanted to do it and part of that is because in my early thirties I had read John Briffa and had a phase of no refined carbs. I lost a ton of weight and felt really energetic. So I already had an idea that this was for me

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 16/06/2019 18:49

I was worried about a dinner party last night - had a fab time and all I ate out of line were 2 carrots, a very small raspberry sorbet and a not huge pannacotta. Had a fantastic time enjoying someone's fab cooking.

I've done this before and know if it's going to work longer term I have to have days where it doesn't quite work to plan. Cooked roast dinner today and only had 4 kinds of green veg and meat so pretty pleased with myself.

Summery1 · 16/06/2019 18:51

Thanks Sitting I'm afraid my food can be boring.

Busy weekend here, out at a blitz all day Saturday with 8yo DS. Then stuff for elderly DM today. I miss exercise! Plus hard to eat well.

Today;
B: 2 eggs, hollandaise, spinach, mushrooms, 1 sausage.
L: piece of chicken(dry++) and butter (no mayonnaise available) cabbage.
D; mackerel blended with mascarpone and g yogurt (Hmm but all the fridge had to offer), coleslaw. Mint tea and dark chocolate.

Off to read some recipe threads, before I give up due to food boredom!
