Week 3 - Sumer 19 Low Carb Bootcamp - Bootcamp Light?

BIWI · 27/05/2019 08:09

Morning all. Today sees the start of week 3, which is when you can, if you wish, move on to Bootcamp Light. This means you can now introduce some fruit, some nuts and seeds and alcohol in moderation.

Note the bold formatting!

However you don't have to move on to Bootcamp Light if you don't want to. If it's working for you, then by all means stay on Bootcamp. Some people choose to do Bootcamp during the week but take a more relaxed approach at the weekend.

Here are carb counts for fruit - you can see that most of them are pretty high. These are taken from Sainsbury's website and show the amount of carbs per 100g:

Canteloupe melon 4
Raspberries 4.6
Blackberries 5.1
Galia/Honeydew melon 5.3
Passion fruit 5.8
Strawberries 6.1
Watermelon 6.8
Peach 7.5
Plums 8.8
Papaya 8.8
Nectarine 9
Blueberries 9.1
Pineapple 10.1
Kiwi 11
Apples 11.8
Mango 14.1
Lychees 14.3
Grapes 17
Pomegranate seeds 18.7
Banana 23.2

When it comes to nuts and seeds, these too vary widely:

Brazils 3.1
Walnuts 3.3
Pine nuts 4 (but beware - toasted pine nuts are 10)
Macadamias 5.3
Pecans 5.8
Desiccated coconut (technically a fruit!) 6.4
Almonds 6.9 (smoked almonds are 7.7)
Monkey nuts 9.3
Peanuts (salted) 10.9
Fresh coconut (from the chilled cabinet) 15.2
Cashews 18.1

(These carb counts for either salted or unsalted)

Seeds:

Sesame 0.9
Poppy 4.7
Chia 8.6
Pumpkin 15.2
Sunflower 16.4

As far as alcohol is concerned, the best drinks are clear spirits (gin/vodka/whisky/rum) but you need to be careful what mixer you're using. Soda is by far the best option, but if you want something else, you'll need to go down the artificial sweetener route to keep the carbs low.

Dry white wine and Champagne are OK, and red wine. Avoid beer and cider.

I'm still up too late!
Has anyone subscribed to the Diet Doctor?
B: sausage rasher, egg, mushrooms tomato. Coffee with cream.
L: chicken Caesar salad, no croutons. I couldn't finish it, but it was big.
D: I've skipped as wasn't hungry.

I'm a regular weigher, and weight not moving this week. But I feel good, so will keep going.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 01/06/2019 06:36

So men Hmm. DH decided to dip the tiniest bit of toe into low carbing. Basically just having what I have for dinner. He still has cereal for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch and even had a sticky bun in the evening but once but has lost 3 lbs. What a bastard Grin.

NigellaAwesome · 01/06/2019 07:12

I am so behind on this thread, but just to pick up on a couple of things posters have mentioned (apologies if they have been raised already).

Buttermint tea - you can buy it direct from Twinings. I think if you spend £30 you get free delivery, so I bulk bought buttermint tea (It's about 15 or 20 boxes).

Feeling sad and emotional - the things about our fat cells is that in addition to storing energy as fat, our body uses them as a handy quarantine storage area for toxins and excess oestrogen in order to remove them from the blood and causing damage. So very often when people start to lose weight, as their fat cells release their contents, so too are the toxins and excess oestrogen, which can make us feel a bit meh. It also accounts for why some people have mid cycle bleeding or more frequent periods.

Right, off to read and catch up.

Good morning all. Feeling better this morning. Just having my first cup of butter mint tea. Thank you, thank you, thank you. (And my apologies for not remembering who originally commented on it). A lovely start to a (long) day at a theme park. Taking low carb snacks. However I have got cheese today (as I was running out of ideas), first time in two weeks. I will be moderate though. Dinner will be anything we can find when we get back so probably omelette. Sending sunny weekend good wishes to all.

NigellaAwesome · 01/06/2019 08:19

Ok, I've finally caught up! What a great thread

@MrsFionaCharming I put berries in water and it gives it a lovely flavour. Also Taylor's sweet rhubarb tea bags are good. That dress was amazing on you, you have a lovely hourglass figure at both sizes.

@AthelstaneTheUnready Arf at pretending to be Steve McQueen as a distraction.

@BIWI if you also have a bbq it can be useful. We had just a microwave and bbq for 5 months when our kitchen was being done. It's a right pain getting building work done, but such a joy to have a new kitchen.

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

Re almond milk in coffee shops, I find that most of them use sweetened stuff. I sometimes bring a carton of unsweetened with me, and most places are happy enough to use it. I did bring it in a little plastic bottle once, and when I asked if they could use it to make a latte the staff looked horrified. I think they thought it might have been breast milk I think I will start carrying a little container of cream which I can add myself. Did I mention I was in Valencia last week? Apparently the phrase for pouring cream is nata liquida (pronounced LEEKida). I discovered this after an extended conversation with a very lovely and patient waiter.

@Heartyhooker how does the lemon juice in water prevent kidney stones? My DM is plagued with them.

NigellaAwesome · 01/06/2019 08:21

That should have said Thanks for @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

m0therofdragons · 01/06/2019 08:22

Gah, still dancing around and refusing to drop under the 10st. Was 10st yesterday and am 10st 1 today but period has started and I'm about to do park run. I want 9st 13 to happen this week!

Bbq today so will stick with meat and salad!

Nameusernameuser · 01/06/2019 08:36

Upthread I mentioned id gained a random 4lbs at the beginning of the week, it's gone! I wonder what I ate to bring that on, or perhaps I've ovulated late and that was the spike in weight? No idea. If I lost 3 quarters of a lb by Monday I'll be on track to have lost 2lbs a week. If that carries on for bootcamp I'll be pleased!

Flowersandthorns · 01/06/2019 08:42

Thank you everyone for your advice. I only add the fish - no batter or chips! It was easier as it was in a box so I could just shut the lid! The only other thing I had was some cheese - no alcohol, doughnuts or ice cream! I'm very proud of myself!

starsky22 · 01/06/2019 08:56

Well done flowers

Thanks hearty I'll definitely try the roasted almond milk

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/06/2019 09:12

Thank you all for your kind thoughts. I am feeling a bit better this morning.

MumbleLumble · 01/06/2019 09:33

Well done flowers, food is so much harder to resist when it's right in front of you like that.

I REALLY struggled last night. I made burgers and chips as a Friday night treat for DH and the DC. It smelt sooooo good. But I resisted!

This week has been quite hard as I've been off work so I'm kind of looking forward to getting back into routine next week.

What's everyone's plans this weekend? Normally we would eat out over the weekend but I'm trying to avoid that so that what I'm eating is definitely LC.

Notwatchingtvtoday · 01/06/2019 09:41

Morning all
Flowers for all, to cheer us through the day but especially for (mrssad)
Family gatherings are so hard after you loose a loved one, I have to admit I have not been to any for a couple of years, since my darling son died, but slowly we are rebuilding and starting to do things that I thought would be impossible in my early grief. To anyone grieving or feeling sad, my advice is always minute by minute, hour by hour and just find an excuse to leave if it all is too much.

and well done (flowers) I find being out so much harder than when you are at home doing your own food or eating a packed lunch

I am on the last day of 2 week boot camp and have lost 6lbs in total, really pleased, hopefully I can get 2 more off before we go on holiday next week.

1 cup of tea with milk
B Greek yogurt, teaspoon of Marsacapone, teaspoon of Linwoods flaxseed, sunflower and pumpkin seeds (3.8g per100g) and 1 frozen raspberry crumbled on top
Coffee with teaspoon of butter whizzed with stick blender ( I really can’t tell the diffference between it with butter or cream) and it leaves me some wiggle room for if I’m out or desperate for another cuppa
L 2 Rollitos, smoked mackerel , celery, lettuce
D salmon, celeriac mash, green beans

Lots and lots and even more water 😀, I am tracking using the water part of the Fitbit app, 2.5 litres of water or herbal tea

Hope you all have positive and gentle days

ShagMeRiggins · 01/06/2019 10:12

Really well done flowersandthorns. I had meant to suggest it might have been possible to ask for a salad instead of chips, not sure if they could have accommodated that but always worth asking, and it gives more food at least.

We were all too exhausted from our day to cook last night so my husband did a kebab takeaway. I might have swallowed a bite or two of pita bread but generally left it. Next time I’ll just pull the bloody thing off my plate, duh. Hmm

Funny that no matter how long one has been following this WoE it’s still easy to get lax about the most basic things that make it easier to follow. Like simply taking bread off a plate, or not ordering the bread in the first place.

Tonight’s dinner will be much better—skate fried in garlic and salted butter with capers, plus FLGV. Can’t wait, the perfect Champions’ League Final dinner, ha!

In other news, my back is revealing a rib or two. How exciting. But my arse! Where’s it gone?

For those who know—what are good ways, other than taking up cycling or figure skating, to build and lift the necessary muscles for a heart-shaped bottom? I yearn for a heart-shaped bottom, kind of like Kim Basinger’s in 9 1/2 Weeks when she was doing the strip to You Can Leave Your Hat On. Sigh.

Preferably something I can do at home without specialist equipment. Stair steps, maybe? Confused

Ninkaninus · 01/06/2019 10:13

All you need to get a nice round bottom is lots of weighted squats. Buy a kettlebell and you can do it at home no problem at all.

Ninkaninus · 01/06/2019 10:15

I know what you mean about kebabs. I think that’s one thing that undoubtedly is nicer with the addition of pitta bread. So I’d have to do the same - get it off my plate damn quickly, or I’d have to have a bit.

m0therofdragons · 01/06/2019 10:25

OMG park run was hard... so hot and really didn't think I'd complete it. Had a couple of mini walks but made it and was faster than last week. I've decided I need to make myself do 5 before deciding I hate it. My forehead is pink despite the factor 15 sun cream!

Ninkaninus · 01/06/2019 10:29

Well done m0ther! I loved running, it’s so good for the mind (never mind the body!)

Rshard · 01/06/2019 10:31

Glad you’re feeling a bit better this morning greebols

Kebabs - one of my fave takeaways. Both our local chippy and kebab shop will do them just with piles of salad so perfect for this woe.

Think we’re also barbecuing today although the weather here isn’t as nice as promised - hotter than Ibiza I was told.

Rshard · 01/06/2019 10:32

Well done m0ther!

m0therofdragons · 01/06/2019 10:48

Wish I loved running @Ninkaninus

I do like the smug feeling that I can spend the afternoon not moving much in friend's garden without feeling guilty! I have to remind myself that I take around 35 minutes to complete it so it's only a tiny bit of my day then it's over.

Ninkaninus · 01/06/2019 10:52

I don’t think many people love running while they’re doing it! But there’s nothing like it for mental cleansing, and it’s pretty much free!

Flowersandthorns · 01/06/2019 10:54

Thank you everyone. It so much easier now I'm back home! Today will be a BBQ which is easy on this WOE.

Rayna37 · 01/06/2019 10:57

I had a much better parkrun today too despite a long slow climb on this course you do three bloody THREE times. Off to shops now for a mini shop of LCHF weekend treats.

Tinkerbellx · 01/06/2019 11:00

Thank you so much for replies/ lovely welcome and quick and easy meal ideas .
Have spent an hour meal planning and will shop online too .
Had no idea you could buy low carb ready meals . Never bought a ready meal in my life until I was single .... but hey ho needs must !
So my starting weight do I input that into the spreadsheet myself ?
Only have 10 lbs to lose but I cannot shift it and not one of my summer hol dresses or swimsuits fits so hoping this works .
