Week 7 - Low Carb Bootcamp - Girding our loins and getting a grip

BIWI · 25/02/2019 08:51

Morning all

Having a bit of a snigger to myself, because autocorrect wanted me to tile the thread 'Girding our doings ...' Grin

Here's the spreadsheet

We only have four weeks left. I know! Doesn't time fly when you're having fun?!

There's been a bit of slippage going on, I notice - and whilst it's not all been of our own doing, sometimes it's about situations where we've reverted to 'learnt' behaviour or type.

So. Let's all pull our socks up! We have only four weeks left, but those weeks could make all the difference.

If you're worried about how the next few weeks are going to go, perhaps a return to Bootcamp rather than Bootcamp Light might help?

Whatever strategy you adopt, here's wishing us all very good luck

Good to read of successes with the scales and good eating all round. It sounds like we are getting a grip as required this week! I also showed a loss on the scales this morning, and a NSV of another notch on my belt. Now to see if I can hang onto it until Monday...

School lunch came up trumps today. I usually find it difficult to eat enough fat and therefore can be hungry when I get home from work, but the roast pork came with crackling Grin
L - roast pork, cauliflower cheese, mangetout and crackling
D - butter basted chicken breast joint probably with broccoli and a creamy mushroom sauce. It depends how I'm feeling later as I have to clear my kitchen and living room ready for the decorator to start tomorrow morning.

I think I will avoid the TV programme venus - I found myself getting very narky just reading another weighloss thread on Mumsnet last night!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/02/2019 13:14

Found another good vid, this one talking about the insulin resistance that you get on low carb diets (and why it isnt harmful) but also explains why having a carby blow out after you are fat adapted is not good (leading to a carb hangover) he also has a lovely accent :)

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/02/2019 13:15

Sorry here!

Discussion on the ineffectiveness of short term diets on Jeremy Vine right now.

Siameasy · 27/02/2019 13:24

I don’t think I could watch that venusandmars I’d be shouting at the TV
If you read Trick and Treat he has the idea that we like to create situations then solve them. So we created diabetes and here come the drug companies to resolve it (£££££). No doctor is going to stick his neck out and recommend LCHF in case the diabetic dies and LCHF will be blamed

I’m convinced the NHS want us obese, diabetic and dementia-afflicted. Reviewing their advice they are still pushing starches

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 27/02/2019 13:44

I've had a salad and apple for lunch and I just want to eat some junk food now. Angry Why can't I be all zen and focused on the end goal?

Office is awash with Cornish cream teas today. Angry Angry So far untouched by me.

MrsKoala · 27/02/2019 14:19

Yes, Venus, I found it frustrating. It spent disproportionate time on carb flu without pointing out it goes away. The way they spoke it was for the duration of the time you were eating keto rather than a few days. I'd much rather that than the discomfort of constant hunger that I get on calorie controlled diets.

Rshard · 27/02/2019 14:26

I’m going to avoid that programme after reading your assessment @venus!

Did anyone listen to Jeremy Vine, his show normally irritates me so I swerved

Ive been lurking and wanting to post for ages but...

Not sure any of you - even BIWI - can help me tbh :(

A few years ago I lost 20lbs low carbing. I dont remember finding it hard.

I'm now heavier than I was before then! :(

I've been trying to low carb since beginning of Feb. With very very little success.

My issues seem to be;
I'm older. I'm peri and on hrt. I think this could be an issue. I'm allergic to cheese and yoghurt and shellfish so they aren't an option for me on this woe.

I have no idea if its carb flu but I get incredibly debilitating migraines if I lose carb for more than 2 days. (I do get hemi plegic migraines)

I'm tired, fat and fed up.

On the plus side I've been doing yoga since Jan 1st and love it. I'm def more flexible now :)

I dont drink so alcohol not and issue.

This woe makes sense to me but I'm struggling to incorporate the tenets into my every day life.

Any hope for me? Tips? Thoughts? Obvious things I'm missing?

Thank you x

Hugs to you mrskoala

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 14:44

I should also say - against my better judgement - I've even tried calorie control for the first time.

Weighing out of food and constantly logging it makes me very sad :(

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 14:47

Oh and I'm not that keen on red meat! :)

1stMrsF · 27/02/2019 15:42

Welcome @67chevvyimpala This is my first time LC so I've not got advice to give, but I'm sure someone much wiser will be along shortly. However, just wanted to say welcome and glad you decided to post. Hope you can get some suggestions to help.

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 15:45

Thank you mrsf

Dh is away with work this week in the USA and I find it harder when I'm not cooking for us both

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/02/2019 15:48

@67chevvyimpala

That is almost certainly carb flu, have you tried to stick it out to see if it ends?

I do think that the menopause can slow things down so you may be right there. Although im a bit younger i had a similar experience where i lost nearly 30lb 8 years ago low carbing in less then 3 months. its sooo much harder this time and im only 32!

What has worked for me is being suoer strict so no cheating AT ALL. im now at a stage where im not hungry and feeling good so the lack of weight loss doesnt matter so much as i feel very well. saying that i have lost 9 1/2 pounds since the start of bootcamp so it is working just in fits and starts. just come to the end of 4 weeks of plateau.

What helped me get things started again was doing some intermittent fasting and also swapping a meal a day with a low carb soup so im eating less overall.

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/02/2019 15:50

Your dietary requirements do limit you somewhat. you will be eating lots of poultry, cream and eggs!

Could you tell us a bit more about what you are eating now?

I always forget just how little i was eating the first time i did this, i just remember how easy it was, hence the frustration.

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 15:59

I eat a lot of eggs :) I like eggs!

I like salmon and chicken and meatballs.

I worry about too much processed meat.

I prefer veg to salad tbh. Enjoy soup but a lot of souls are quite carby I've found?

Love heavy cream and enjoy it with berries. I have a great low carb dark choc mousse recipe!

Don't mind nuts. Love dark choc :)

I drink herbal and green teas and water. Love coffee but have to have it white.

I remember eating a lot of egg mayo/salad/cold beef (it was summer time)

I was brought up on meat and 2 veg every day. Stews, sausage and mash, jackets, etc

Like many my age I guess?

Snacking has become a BIG issue for me over the past few months.
Boredom? Emotional crutch? Genuine hunger? No idea.

Am I a lost cause?? :(

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 16:04

My issue is - and dh often says to me - there is no way I should weight what I do for what I eat.

Most days I dont eat til lunchtime (which is ok by me)

I often graze at lunch - fruit, omelette, crisps...

Then dinner of usually a starch (potatoes or rice) and meat/fish.

Then chocolate and biscuits 🙄

Obv I know the latter is an issue 😁

As I said I've been doing yoga every day for weeks. I enjoy it. And do feel better for it.

I have no idea where to go from here.

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 16:08

And then theres the folks who tell me I dont need to lose weight...
I know they are trying to be kind but I'm 5 foot 5 and weight 78kgs!
I'm a size 16.
I do put weight on all over so I am in proportion and prob dont look as heavy as I am.

venusandmars · 27/02/2019 16:08

67chevvy can you eat butter?

Post the typical things you are eating in a day and maybe BIWI or someone will give you advice. You need to eat enough fat (add butter, or coconut oil or olive oil to salads etc) and you need to drink lots of water. The bootcamp rules will show you how much.

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 16:10

What am I eating now? It's a mess! :(

Today;

Breakfast: fruit salad for breakfast.
^ had some left from trying low cal.

Snack: cocktail sausages

Lunch: no lunch

Snack: 2 squares of dark choc and z few nuts

Dinner: no idea yet. Kids want pasta.

venusandmars · 27/02/2019 16:10

sorry X post!

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 16:11

Hi thanks for replying.

I do drink a fair bit of water.

Yes love butter :)

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 16:14

A "normal" day would be:

B: x
Lunch: omelette and bacon/veg/sausage
Snack: biscuits
Dinner: cottage pie and veg
Snack: chocolate

Drinks: water, herbal tea, coffee

Iamnotacerealkiller · 27/02/2019 16:14

hmm sounds like a good variation.
it sounds like you need to get your hunger/cravings under control. why not try the first two weeks of bootcamp which is on here to get you into ketosis and hopfully a nice bit of motivating initial weight loss. it does mean losing the chocolate and nuts though :(

I think this woe is all about finding what works for you. for me i never go shopping hungry, no treats in the house and dailey weighing to keep in track.

Bought soup often has thickeners in it. i make a g0od one which is leek, goats cheese, bacon, mushroom and chicken stock. in your case you can swap the cheese for cream. lots of garlic and seasoning and its great. i usually have a big batch in the fridge so im less likely to go astray as its low effort.

67chevvyimpala · 27/02/2019 16:35

I guess I need to find a few days where I can just hunker down and get through the withdrawal?
