Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - which way will you go?

BIWI · 28/01/2019 08:45

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So a few mixed results so far. Hopefully there will be some more good ones on the spreadsheet!

I suspect that what a lot of you are coming to realise is that this isn't a way of eating that can allow you to cheat or even to take your eye off the ball.

In this initial phase, while we're aiming to become fat-adapted, it's really important that you keep your carbs as low as you can (within sensible limits - this is not a a zero carb diet - you should be eating enough veg and salad to get good nutrition, which will mean you're eating carbs)

I know that sometimes it's impossible. I'm in a situation where tonight I'm being cooked for, by people who have no idea I'm low carbing, and who haven't asked if there's anything I can/can't eat - so I'll just have to accept it. But whilst it's within your control, you really do need to stay strong.

Now.

This is the start of the infamous week 3 (and next week, week 4) - and it's very, very, VERY common for weight loss to stop - or sometimes even for people to gain slightly, even if they're following the rules.

So. You can decide to stay on Bootcamp if you want to, to help deal with this, or you could move onto Bootcamp Light, which means you can start to add some fruit, some nuts and seeds and some alcohol back into your diet.

The operative word is 'some'! All in moderation - and not at every meal, every day - because this will mean that you won't see the weight loss you want to.

There are three options:

  • stay on Bootcamp
  • move to Bootcamp Light
  • choose a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week, Bootcamp Light at the weekend

Whatever you choose, I hope that you have a good, positive and successful week. Flowers

BIWI. It's so easy to take written text wrong but it's obvious you are doing this bootcamp with such great intentions and your experience and knowledge is invaluable. We would get nowhere if you didn't point out where we are going wrong.

I am always glad when you correct errors as we all learn from them, not just the poster you are replying to.
Also, reminding people that although they are happy cheating its unhelpful to the majority of us was a valuable point and hopefully useful to all.
Please carry on what you do. Flowers

Argh! I have had enough today I do not want to adult anymore! I have now been into school regard my 2 boys behaviours 4 times since Monday. Both have special needs and our a challenge at times, they haven't settles back into school well since going back in January. On op of this work is just very busy.

I am and always have been an emotional eater! I found myself in the shop after the latest school meeting. I am super proud I managed to resist the chocolate my usual go to product. In the end brought Burgers 0.1g of carbs per burger & blue cheese plus strawberries - to go with the cream I had at home (Weird combination I know!) I went home and scoffed the lot with a small salad.

I feel so heavy! I had 5 very large strawberries - i know we can eat them in moderation but this was not moderation. Will this destroy the weight i have already lost.

On the plus side since my last posts my tiredness has lifted may be i did just have a 10 day carb flu?!

venusandmars · 30/01/2019 14:50

Flowers for BIWI
I admit I was a bit surprised when I bounded in full of enthusiasm on day 1 and got told off for several errors, but I reckoned I could either feel hurt and flounce away, or learn about this woe. So, thanks BIWI for sharing all your knowledge, and for keeping us on the right track.

nowlook · 30/01/2019 15:13

That must smart a bit, @BIWI...it's not like you're getting paid for this!

Equally coincidentally, I googled "low carb bootcamp week 3" this morning from a different computer and ended up with one from early 2014! That makes you quite the stalwart, so don't let a couple of comments grind you down. Flowers

BIWI · 30/01/2019 15:34

Thank you all. I wasn't looking for praise although it's very nice to get it Grin, just a bit concerned. I hate confrontation and in real life I'm much more of a wuss than I appear to be here Grin

@nowlook, yes I've been doing it since 2012! If only I'd known back then what I started ...

@Methemummy

I had 5 very large strawberries

I really don't think is going to be too much of a problem, especially as you swerved all the chocolate!

I was constantly up at the school for DS2 (who didn't have any special needs, but was just a little bugger), and so I feel your pain.

Oh BIWI, I've teased you on earlier threads about being scared of you shouting at me, but it was definitely light-hearted. I've thought a lot about how much effort and time this must take out of your life, and I'm grateful for it.

I've been reading that breakfast book - 99p on kindle - and have decided to go back to daily intermittent fasting. I did 16:8 for a long time and had good results (not low carbing) and the science behind blood sugars is compelling.

It's also cheaper and I won't be eating as many eggs. :D I like eggs and all, but I am often eating them at breakfast and lunch. Blurgh.

nowlook · 30/01/2019 15:39

On a brighter note, I've booked a villa in Croatia for two weeks in August.

It's for my 40th (which was in November) and is the most beautiful, decadent thing I've ever seen. Just the four of us for the first week and then friends coming to join us for the second. Once in a lifetime stuff for me! I get embarrassingly emotional every time I look at the pictures.

Great motivation to KOKO!

Mimosa1 · 30/01/2019 15:44

Oh @BIWI please don't take any notice although it must have been painful. You're an absolute heroine.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 30/01/2019 15:50

Flowers to BIWI. Unlike the objectors to your tone, I'm still juvenile enough to need the threat of a telling off.

Besides, I don't know that I'd pay any attention to "don't you think you might / perhaps you shouldn't have / maybe next time...". Short sharp NO, like I'm a puppy weeing on the carpet, that works for me.

AandL · 30/01/2019 16:06

@BIWI People need to be told if,when, how they are going awry and if they can't take it so be it. I odn't think you are mean or scary, just straight-up!

Big thanks for the support girls. My spa treatment was lovely - a hot stone back massage & facial. The girl makes & uses her own natural products and it was bliss, the fragrances were heaven. There were "refreshments" after - beautiful hibiscus tea, and a plate of biscuits, which stayed firmly on the plate :)

@nowlook Sounds fab! You should print up pic/use as phone screensaver to keep you motivated.

Todays menu:
6.20am small creamy coffee
10.30am large creamy coffee
11am - overnight not oats - frozen blueberries, raspberries, greek yog, almond butter & crunchy flaxseed. Definitely a once in a while rather than regular breakfast but was a nice treat after my morning of magnetic tunnel terror!
2pm - half an Aldi Caesar salad - had to share with poor famished child
3pm - cheese crisp + pate
5.30pm - lemon & pepper duck breast with roast broc & green beans

Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - which way will you go?
nowlook · 30/01/2019 16:12

@AandL Glad you had a lovely spa treatment- must be a stressful old time at the moment.

I'm also having duck breast for supper, but still pondering the sauce...off to browse the recipe threads!

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 30/01/2019 16:14

ah well Biwi the trick to avoiding the stick - other than being squeaky clean - is to er just not mention any mishaps on here. It's not like you can see through our screens is it? or is it? Shock

I am CHEESED off (no pun intended). Feeling lethargic (I've got something going on personally, it's not the low carbing) and just grrrrrr Bear. Total effort to get up from the sofa today, I have a day at home today and have done nothing. I was planning to make nospag bol for dinner but I just cannot be arsed. Think I will just chuck some chicken thighs in the oven for dinner.

Boiled eggs with asapargus tips cooked in olive oil for breakfast
A very lazy lunch of 2 baby bel and 2 slices of ham spread with cream cheese.

Dinner, chicken thighs with crispy skins. Is there any veg that I can roast that's allowed that I don't have to do anything to other than run under the tap furtively? I've got portobello mushrooms, chard, green beans, asapargus, carrots (not allowed), tomatoes (not allowed), butternut squash (not allowed), peas (not allowed), a limp red pepper (not allowed) swede (it can fuck off), courgette (BORING).

There ends my huffy post

duckii · 30/01/2019 16:14

Hi all, well done to all the losses! I'm new here and looking to join, am I able to join? I need the help!Smile

MrsTerryPratcett · 30/01/2019 16:16

Look BIWI some people, I am one of them, are whiney snowflakes. We are incapable of doing something like this alone and need shouted at. I didn't do any exercise three years ago and a woman with exactly your tone (you'd like her) runs the running group that got me to 10k and beyond. I still hear her saying, "pump your arms, stop whining, it's just a hill, no one has died at run group...yet".

She always says if someone doesn't like it, she'll refund their money. Run group is free Grin

Other people may need a different approach and that's fine. But it's nothing to do with you. Your way works for us.

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/01/2019 16:28

@Slinky
Roast cauliflower is lovely , broccoli ? chunks of cabbage
Brussels sprouts roasted with butter and garlic are a taste sensation

nowlook · 30/01/2019 16:32

@SlinkyDinkyDoo

If you've got Portobello mushrooms, take the stalks out, whack in some cheese (I use cream cheese and grated parmesan) and bake for 20 minutes. There are other adventurous things you could stuff them with, but it doesn't sound like today's the day for that Wink

nowlook · 30/01/2019 16:35

@duckii How tempted were you to say "well done to all the losers"? Be honest, now.

Just jump in! @BIWI's looking for fresh blood Grin

AandL · 30/01/2019 16:45

@Slinky
I've got portobello mushrooms, chard, green beans, asapargus

I'd put the greens above in a roasting tray with evoo, lemon juice & salt & pepper, roast the thighs along side or in separate dish but when they are nearly done, put the chicken on top of the mushrooms so they get roasted in chicken juices?

AandL · 30/01/2019 17:02

I have got a hankering for this recipe
www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/tournedos-rossini-recipe
which I ate in a restaurant many many years ago, now my restaurant had paté , not fois gras ....so any ideas of how to adapt recipe for LC? Is the Marsala sauce a no-go?

1stMrsF · 30/01/2019 17:06

Been in London at a conference today. I can tell you that there is NOTHING LC to snack on at the coffee stations in a Holiday Inn, no cream or lemon to go with hot drinks (and the selection of herbal tea was rubbish too.). But I resisted the biscuits

L - Roast beef, chorizo mac cauli, broccoli, salad with olive oil (boring and not very tasty but on plan)
D - Ginger, chilli and lime chicken breasts with courgettes
Water rubbish (also tricky today) will catch up a bit at home.
Exercise class tonight

Dropped below 14st on the scales this morning Grin Beyond thrilled as that is my first goal achieved!

@BIWI If people don't like the boot camp treatment they can go find another diet thread that suits them no? That is surely the point of something like MN - you find the group of people that works for you. I am loving it.

MrsKoala · 30/01/2019 17:17

People are so different with how they like to do things especially with diets. That's why there are so many out there. The name Bootcamp should really give you a clue of the style of the thread.

I don't need 'support' as such I just like having someone I can ask questions of and joining in general chat/food ideas. I would hate WW - the thought of people clapping me and being all 'woooohooo' is so weird. I do everything 'on my own' in my mind. I never cheat. I have never cheated on a diet ever. If I get to the point I want to cheat I give up. I'm very black and white. Which is why this has been the only diet which has worked for me so effectively - it's all about rules, which I love.

Someone telling me off makes no difference to me. But the rules 'changing' frustrates me. So planning on eating cheese and then being told I am having too much irritates me. Not because of the person telling me, but I get annoyed with my rigidness.

MrsTerryPratcett · 30/01/2019 17:21

@1stMrsF conferences are the worst. I spend half my life at conferences and trainings and it's a carb fest.

As someone who facilitates and speaks at conferences, the last thing you want is tired, sugar crashing people!

MrsKoala · 30/01/2019 17:25

@AandL That's one of my mums favourite meals. Iirc she uses a slice of smooth pate. I'm sure the sauce could be made with red wine. I'll ask her how she makes it.
Maybe you could do a mushroom and red wine sauce and have it almost like a beef wellington without the pastry?

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 30/01/2019 17:28

Thank you all for your suggestions and I do have a cauliflower that I completely forgot about.
