Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - which way will you go?

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So a few mixed results so far. Hopefully there will be some more good ones on the spreadsheet!

I suspect that what a lot of you are coming to realise is that this isn't a way of eating that can allow you to cheat or even to take your eye off the ball.

In this initial phase, while we're aiming to become fat-adapted, it's really important that you keep your carbs as low as you can (within sensible limits - this is not a a zero carb diet - you should be eating enough veg and salad to get good nutrition, which will mean you're eating carbs)

I know that sometimes it's impossible. I'm in a situation where tonight I'm being cooked for, by people who have no idea I'm low carbing, and who haven't asked if there's anything I can/can't eat - so I'll just have to accept it. But whilst it's within your control, you really do need to stay strong.

Now.

This is the start of the infamous week 3 (and next week, week 4) - and it's very, very, VERY common for weight loss to stop - or sometimes even for people to gain slightly, even if they're following the rules.

So. You can decide to stay on Bootcamp if you want to, to help deal with this, or you could move onto Bootcamp Light, which means you can start to add some fruit, some nuts and seeds and some alcohol back into your diet.

The operative word is 'some'! All in moderation - and not at every meal, every day - because this will mean that you won't see the weight loss you want to.

There are three options:

  • stay on Bootcamp
  • move to Bootcamp Light
  • choose a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week, Bootcamp Light at the weekend

Whatever you choose, I hope that you have a good, positive and successful week. Flowers

Well, I had the Moliere omelette which was lauded in the Guardian this morning.

It was just a fucking cheese omelette. Don't know what I expected, really. How do they get away with putting that kind of guff in recipe books?

Fortunately, had braised baby gem lettuce and cauliflower steak with it, so not all bad.

1stMrsF · 29/01/2019 21:41

I buy ready meal mashed swede it's just swede, butter salt and pepper and no peeling chopping cooking or mashing Grin

nowlook · 30/01/2019 06:33

My mother puts the whole swede in the microwave for a minute after she's peeled the bugger. And she's very wise.

Hefzi · 30/01/2019 07:57

I find the same thing as StuntNun wrt breakfast. I now have mine at work around 11/11.30, lunch mid-afternoon and then make myself leave the office to be home in time to eat and be finished by 7ish. I find it much easier at the weekend or on days I'm wfh - which I think is some psychological weirdness. Also find it easier on the water front too.

B today is cold tortilla-ish and some oily leaves
L cheese and celery
D steamed veg tossed in coconut oil and some peppery tomatoey sauce for interest

ChangoMutney · 30/01/2019 08:08

Good morning, I have a new battery from my scales so weighed myself this morning I’ve now lost 13 lbs since we started. However, I have had a really nasty cold the last few days and not eaten a great deal. It’s been very very difficult to stick t LC as I haven’t felt this ill in a long time and would normally comfort eat. I broke this morning, dh made me a toasted bagel and it was too much to resist. I know, I know I’m getting back on and not going to completely collapse.

Rshard · 30/01/2019 09:48

Hope you feel better soon @changomutney, some horrid germs around at the moment

Forgot to log my food yesterday, keeps me on track
B - avo scrambled eggs salmon
L - Greek salad, chicken
D swede topped cottage pie, broccoli

S - yoghurt and berries

BIWI · 30/01/2019 10:34

That's brilliant @ChangoMutney! But sorry to hear about the lurgy. I'm fighting something off too, although feel reasonably OK right now. But so many people seem to be poorly right now Sad

Don't worry about the bagel - at this stage, just eating something is important. (But don't use it as an excuse to jump into the biscuit tin!)

Loving the swede talk Grin

I love it as either chips (coated in olive oil, and seasoned with sea salt black pepper and crushed chilli flakes) or mash, with lots of butter. A million miles away to the watery, fibrous stuff we used to get at school dinners!

Forgot to log yesterday's food here although I'm keeping track on mfp

Today:
B - boiled egg
L - tuna mayonnaise, salad, avocado
D - steak, celeriac dauphinoise, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms

AandL · 30/01/2019 11:01

Had MRI this morning, really found it horrible :( Have to resist treating myself with carbs, wine etc as comfort /reward today now. Have a spa treatment booked for this afternoon which will hopefully bring my anxiety levels back down.

1Wildheartsease · 30/01/2019 11:30

Sorry to hear this AandL. (The airport scanner was enough to upset me!) Hope you are already feeling calmer and that you enjoy your virtuous spa treat much more than carb-comforters.

I've never liked swede( miserable childhood memories of fiber-filled orange-mush). You lot have tempted me to re-try it. This is a very healthy thread for the vegetably-challenged.

AandL · 30/01/2019 11:40

Thanks @1Wildheartsease, was feeling much better till I got home to see the kids lunch boxes sitting on counter, the ONE effin morning d?h has to get them ready & out, useless twat.
And breathe.....

BIWI · 30/01/2019 12:18

Focus on the spa @AandL! Sorry it was a horrible experience. I've never had one, but not sure I'd like to go through one from what others have said.

What are you having done at the spa? DH bought me a spa day for Christmas but I haven't got round to booking that yet.

Anyone else got snow? School was open so I had to leave extra early to get dc there which meant no packed lunch so I'm heading to the work canteen to see what's there.

BIWI · 30/01/2019 12:46

No snow in SW London, but I think we're due some tomorrow.

Which is typical because tomorrow is the only day this week I actually have to go out to work!

Unintentionally started IF this week when the gastro fairy🤢 visited our home ( the night before school went back... Ofcourse... 😦) complete lose of appetite whilst nursing the sick ones But pleased with myself I didn't waver food wise (peanut butter toast is my sick person food)

I m attempting to stick with full boot camp with small addition of lower carb nuts (pecans, macadamias and almonds) in small portions (generally in salads to provide crunch) and option to have a small glass of wine very occasionally (social gatherings only).

Rshard · 30/01/2019 13:12

Enjoy your spa afternoon @AandL.

No snow in my bit of Derbyshire, plenty in the north.

m0therofdragons · 30/01/2019 13:27

I'm in the south west. It's melting now but more coming tomorrow and Friday. Even as massive chunks fell from the sky the met office weather said rain/sleet. Erm nope!

Nsv today as I'm wearing my comfy/stretchy joules dress. I'm definitely not stretching it as much as I have been previously. It's looking so much better. It's a size 12 (but a generous slightly stretched size 12). Heading in the right direction Grin

MrsKoala · 30/01/2019 13:52

@AandL MRIs are horrible. I have to take sedation before mine and still I need to do breathing and meditation exercises. You definitely deserve a nice treat this afternoon. Have a relax and enjoy it.

We had a smattering of snow here in west Kent, but the kids were disappointed there wasn't enough to play in.

I have just measured my waist as I was curious and it is 34" :( It was 29" before I had dd. I have booked a summer holiday for May half term and I am determined to get my waist back by then. I definitely need exercise. I'm also considering IF.

Mandelinka · 30/01/2019 13:59

Waves at BIWI. I’m enjoying the sunshine in the same neighbourhood Grin

Mandelinka · 30/01/2019 14:03

IF works really well for me, I’ve been LC on/off for 2 years, (did Dylan pre-pregnancy which was a torture) and LC keeps me stable between BCs.
I usually had a big mug of green tea at 7.30, try to squeeze second one before leaving house at 8 and my lunch is usually at 1.30, dinner at 7. When I used to have breakfast, I was hungry by 9.30 and proper hangry by 12 and —ready to kill clients—

Mandelinka · 30/01/2019 14:04

have mug of tea

Mandelinka · 30/01/2019 14:13

my DH had some unexpected bad news from home and had to book flight to NZ right away so is now somewhere between Bangkok and Auckland. On top of that, DS had an accident at school yesterday so had to pick him up and take him to A&E, luckily nothing serious. But stress level was def extreme yesterday - which led to me skipping the food completely (unintentionally) and only having a dinner, which was delicious chunk of fish baked with butter, lemon and some frozen spinach. With few sweet potatoes chips and mayo. It was really satisfying to sit down and have a lovely filling meal.
And the best thing, after 14 days of the same weight I’m down 2,2lbs this morning. Unexpected but welcomed.

BIWI · 30/01/2019 14:14

@Mandelinka I'm enjoying the sunshine from the warmth of inside! DH has just been for a run, but then he's mad.

You do know that sweet potatoes aren't allowed, don't you? I'm whispering this given what a shit day you've obviously had

Quite coincidentally last night I read on a totally unrelated thread a couple of posters complaining and saying they were avoiding Bootcamp because they didn't like me shouting at them. It was surprisingly hurtful.

I just want to point out that this is a Bootcamp and although it's designed to be easy to follow, it isn't easy to do - and the consequences of not doing it properly are that it won't work. So I need to always make that crystal clear, and keep people 'in line'.

It's not always easy to get the tone right, and it's clear that some/many object to it, so I'm sorry for that. It's never my intention to upset anyone (and I have, before now, sent PMs to people if I've thought I have).

OP posts:
MrsKoala · 30/01/2019 14:32

Perhaps you should start a parallel thread call Low Carb Fluffy and tell posters it's okay to eat what they want when they want. Grin
