Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - which way will you go?

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So a few mixed results so far. Hopefully there will be some more good ones on the spreadsheet!

I suspect that what a lot of you are coming to realise is that this isn't a way of eating that can allow you to cheat or even to take your eye off the ball.

In this initial phase, while we're aiming to become fat-adapted, it's really important that you keep your carbs as low as you can (within sensible limits - this is not a a zero carb diet - you should be eating enough veg and salad to get good nutrition, which will mean you're eating carbs)

I know that sometimes it's impossible. I'm in a situation where tonight I'm being cooked for, by people who have no idea I'm low carbing, and who haven't asked if there's anything I can/can't eat - so I'll just have to accept it. But whilst it's within your control, you really do need to stay strong.

Now.

This is the start of the infamous week 3 (and next week, week 4) - and it's very, very, VERY common for weight loss to stop - or sometimes even for people to gain slightly, even if they're following the rules.

So. You can decide to stay on Bootcamp if you want to, to help deal with this, or you could move onto Bootcamp Light, which means you can start to add some fruit, some nuts and seeds and some alcohol back into your diet.

The operative word is 'some'! All in moderation - and not at every meal, every day - because this will mean that you won't see the weight loss you want to.

There are three options:

  • stay on Bootcamp
  • move to Bootcamp Light
  • choose a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week, Bootcamp Light at the weekend

Whatever you choose, I hope that you have a good, positive and successful week. Flowers

BIWI the fault is not with you or the big stick - actually, you are remarkably patient and full of humour in the face of many repeated errors!

People just don't like being wrong... and snap at the stick that pokes them in the right direction.

Please ignore the whiners!

I wonder how many lives you have improved since 2012. (My whole family are happier.)

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/01/2019 20:59

Had another good day 👍hopefully see a good result on the scales
Long fast worked week this morning , some days I I wake up hungry , so will fast if I can ,and eat if I can’t
L. Ham and cheese 2 egg omlette
D sort of pork Bolognese , with courgettes, mushrooms and the creamy cauliflower cheese
Lots of water , and lots of steps ( quick steps when outside as it’s very cold 💨)
Nice to see all the food lists on here , will be pinching some of the ideas , though I didn’t like celeriac when I tried it in the autumn Bootcamp 🤢and swede smells too much like school dinners 🤢
Will try it roasted though , as I love roast parsnips , and they’re on the forbidden list

MrsKoala · 30/01/2019 21:26

Had a nice day of food. This week the food has been more thought out and enjoyable. I've put a pit more effort in and it's been worth it.

Today
B - 2 fried duck eggs on courgettes and leeks fried in butter
L - 100g smoked mackerel, 2 hard boiled eggs and black olives with spinach, rocket and watercress and cucumber salad and mayo.
D - Chicken in creamy mushroom and tarragon sauce with kale fried in butter

BIWI · 30/01/2019 21:31

Right. Thanks for all the positive feedback. It's nice to hear that, but also no bad thing for me to take a step back and consider how things are phrased, I think.

Line drawn, and we move on Smile

Celeriac dauphinoise OMG
That was heaven!!!

venusandmars · 30/01/2019 21:49

And some left for tomorrow

ShagMeRiggins · 30/01/2019 22:06

It’s lush, isn’t it venusandmars? Yay.

@BIWI I know you’ve drawn the line but I’m gonna just put my l’il bitty toe over it for a quick sec and say I think you’re ace: you tell the truth, you offer amazing support, and if you’re wrong or misinterpreted you try to clear things up.

So keep doing what you’re doing—if anyone has a problem they should a) communicate that to you and b) question why they are so affected by an unknown online entity trying to help them, for no personal gain Hmm

(I have absolutely no idea how to apostrophise (?) the word ‘little’)

WhatTheFronti · 31/01/2019 01:07

B - proscuttio & cream cheese parcels, coffee with am
L - meatballs in bolognese sauce with cheese & salad greens
D - grilled steak with zucchini & mozerella salad

My meals are meat heavy as haven't been able to get to shops until tomorrow for extras.... having no avocados & broccoli on hand makes me anxious!!!

Bungalowbeth · 31/01/2019 01:31

Hi, sorry I haven’t been posting. Just lurking, have been 💯 but am meeting friends this weekend and no doubt will have a few drinks. Back to strict after that.

I’m 7lb down but I’m still over 17 stone so a long way to go.

Doilooklikeatourist · 31/01/2019 07:10

Ouchy ouchy !
Woke up with horrid cramp in my calf
First time this has happened to me
Will be adding some salt to my water this morning ( after my coffee )
Salt and a squeeze of lemon ?
Will check back on the thread to find the electrolyte drink

Rshard · 31/01/2019 08:36

Ouch @doilooklikeatourist! Have you got any bouillon? That’s good for restoring electrolytes, I’ve grown to quite like it as a drink too.

BIWI · 31/01/2019 08:54

You could also need magnesium, @Doilooklikeatourist - if salt doesn't help, try getting hold of some Zero tabs (made by High5, from their website, or Evans, Holland & Barrett.

Doilooklikeatourist · 31/01/2019 09:16

Thanks @BIWI and @Rshard , I’ve got stock cubes , so I’ll give those a go ( bit more inviting than cold salty water this morning )

m0therofdragons · 31/01/2019 10:05

Breakfast - Greek yoghurt and coffee
Lunch - cauliflower cheese and Palmer ham (double cream and cheese)
Dinner - spinach with chicken, halloumi and peppers

Down 1lb today since Monday so hopefully stick to my steady 2lb a week. May stall a bit but I've stayed on full boot camp rules so fingers crossed.

This article came up on my msn this morning, which is about a new study into the benefits of skipping breakfast.

www.msn.com/en-gb/health/familyhealth/breakfast-may-not-be-the-most-important-meal-of-the-day-after-all/ar-BBSYvMS?ocid=spartanntp

GuyMartinsSideburns · 31/01/2019 11:27

Hello everyone! I've had the lurgy too but feeling much better today, hoping to be tip top tomorrow!

B- scrambled eggs, butter and small amount of grated cheese on top
L- either fish with a butter sauce and oily watercress or a bowl of creamy cauliflower soup
D- whatever I don't have at lunchtime

Still can't handle coffee with cream in, I really dislike it. So I'm still having coffee with milk but trying to keep that to 2 a day minimum with the aim of dropping back to one or none. I hate fruit/herbal/green tea too unfortunately!

Looking forward to the weather eventually warming up so I can be out walking/running/gardening in the sunshine. Daydreams

Have a good day all :)

nowlook · 31/01/2019 11:39

@GuyMartinsSideburns
Have you tried unsweetened almond milk in your coffee? It's working well in my tea and very low-carb (0.1g per 100ml). I'm drinking as much as I fancy on that basis. It's cold enough to freeze nitrogen in Derbyshire today!

GuyMartinsSideburns · 31/01/2019 11:42

@nowlook yes I have - I like it by itself but not keen on the taste in hot drinks. I’ll see what else is possibly available next time I’m out shopping. Smile

KiteMarked · 31/01/2019 11:46

I have slacked on my water intake the past couple of days, and it has quite the obvious effect; constipation. It's definitely worth guzzling down as much as possible just to alleviate that issue!

ShagMeRiggins · 31/01/2019 12:12

Good reminder, KiteMarked.

I haven’t struggled with water consumption in the past but now that I’m working again, and, crucially, out and about more, I find myself holding back in case I can’t get to a loo!

Most days are normal, must remember to push through it in the awkward days. All. Day. Long.

Rshard · 31/01/2019 12:32

Was also going to suggest almond milk in coffee, haven’t tried in tea though. Didn’t like the idea but I might give it a go.

Freezing in my bit of Derbyshire too @nowlook. And of course, today is the day that the plumber came to fit the radiator in the extension so I’ve had not heating all morning.

nowlook · 31/01/2019 12:39

@Rshard It doesn't give you the right colour tea, but if you can get past that, it's bearable!

The plumbing system is antiquated here and we're on oil...only a matter of time before either the boiler stops or we run out. Happens every winter and neither of us learns anything of value. Definition of insanity right there.

Haworthia · 31/01/2019 12:40

Yesterday’s roasted cauliflower was a success, and today I had the leftovers with a serviceable cheese sauce made from creme fraiche, water and grated cheese. Sounds gross but it worked! Thinned the creme fraiche with water then heated in a pan with cheese until melted.

This is the recipe I bastardised if anyone’s interested: www.deliaonline.com/recipes/collections/easy-meat-free-recipes/cauliflower-with-two-cheeses-and-creme-fraiche

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 31/01/2019 13:11

Would that work with cream do you think?

BIWI · 31/01/2019 14:31

Yep - 300ml double cream, bring it to the boil, add in as much grated cheese as you want/like/to taste, and heat gently till it melts into the cheese. Season with black pepper and add a squeeze of lemon. Sounds odd, the sharpness really helps!
