KETO & High Cholesterol

Not looking for medical advice (unless you’re medically trained) but I am interested in other people’s experience of being on a Ketogenic diet.

I’ve been eating low carb high fat for about a year. Last year my Cholesterol was bang on so I was told by the GP. Generally I feel great eating this way!

I’ve recently been referred to Rapid Response Cardiac Department due to chest pain. In the interim I’ve been prescribed a spray and have had a blood test and blood pressure test (bp up!) Surgery rang this morning as my blood lipids/cholesterol are raised too and I need to see a GP.

Contrary to what was previously thought, resent research suggests that it isn’t high fat that raises cholesterol but insulin. There is even info about this on the NHS website. On other parts of the NHS website it contradicts this and promotes low fat diets to help lower cholesterol.

I don’t have any added sugar, am low carb but do have heaps of fat & oil. So confusing and I’m dreading seeing the GP for fear of what he will tell me to eat.

Do any of you ladies and gents have any experience of cholesterol becoming raised after starting a lchf way of eating. Thanks in advance.

I'm not a medic at all, but I do know that cholesterol is a bit of a minefield.

@StuntNun is hugely knowledgeable about this so hopefully she'll be along in a while.

But it's important to note that there isn't just one measurement of your cholesterol - there should be several different 'scores'.

In the main, however, both blood pressure and cholesterol profiles should improve on a low carb diet, which suggests that there might be something else going on with you.

Sorry to hear that, as it must be worrying Sad. I'm sorry I can't help more.

It's difficult to say without knowing your results and whether or not you're overweight. I'm happy to look at your test results if you want to PM me about it. It's definitely worth reading around the subject as there is more evidence that statins aren't the wonder-treatment they were thought to be. Definitely do go and see your GP though because blood pressure usually drops on a low carb diet so if yours has gone up then there could well be some underlying health condition that needs to be addressed.

I’m not medically qualified, but i’ve Just had a full blood lipid profile done after being lchf for a year just to be on the safe side asCholesterol issues run in both sides of my family. I am 42 and going through an early meno. My BMi is about 24

My total cholesterol was way below average, triglycerides too. HDL levels was above average and ldl levels normal. HDL to ldl ratio better than ideal.

Everyone is different though.

Doc was pretty impressed...

Only just seen your replies. Thank you BIWI Stuntnut & fatandlumpy.

Yes I’m am scared about all the implicationalso i don’t know what’s safe to eat any more. Even though the surgery rang me and said I needed to see a gp they wouldn’t let me pre book an appointment. Yesterday by the time I got through they had all gone for the day. I’ll try again today.

Yes StuntNun I will PM you. I’ve got a few numbers for cholesterol as well as thyroid that are all abnormal. It will be later though as I have to copy them from my screen shot.

Thank you again ladies.

Good luck Flowers

Not sure where that info was from re insulin raising cholesterol? In diabetics perhaps....experiments in diabetic mice have found insulin increased cholesterol and heart attacks.
A LC diet lowers your insulin needs...
Hope your results turn out ok.
