Week 4 – Is this the new normal? Because it feels great!

Welcome to the week 4 thread of Bootcamp. I enjoyed the power of wielding BIWI’s big stick last week so much that I am staying on for another week. Grin Normal service will be returning next week.

So week three was great – as well as lots of impressive scale victories, there were loads of NSVs – bras moved to the next hook, colleagues commenting favourably, feeling as if there is more energy, along with err, some less orthodox NSVs such as smaller earlobes and re-emerging pubes. Grin

The thing that has really struck me is the number of posters who have lost significant weight over the last year, and are sticking with it and still seeing progress. That’s a fantastic inspiration to us all, and really shows how this WOE works long-term.

There are a number of posters who have committed to doing dry February (along with a few who are kicking a diet coke habit). This starts on Thursday, but it goes without saying that this is not an excuse to put as much away as possible before that! note to self

Thanks to BIWI who has been working hard on creating the Bootcamp recipe threads. There are loads of great ideas there to avoid menu boredom.

So KOKO, and good luck for the weigh in, but also remember the scales are only one indicator of progress. Here is the link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness.

Hi all,

Just checking in after being off the grid for a bit mainly due to crazy busy work week.

I managed to lose my gain from the weekend but foolishly weighed again this morning and it seems to have gone back on? Not sure if that's because I put the scales on a different part of the floor (we live in an old house with not entirely straight walls or floors), or if my period has messed with me. Anyway, refuse to let it derail me and am KOKO.

B - berries, greek yog, flax
L - pseudo chicken caesar salad from canteen - not nice but OK from a LC perspective
D - having a sort of pork belly / pak choi / asparagus / broccoli / mushroom stirfry. Stuck the pork in a bit of a marinade this morning (bit of oil, bit of vinegar, sprinkle of 5-spice, garlic, ginger and chilli) and will slow cook for a bit when I get in, then finish off in a hot pan with the veg in the hope it goes a bit sticky and crispy. Didn't put any sugary things in the marinade so not sure if I will get the sticky effect I am after, but we shall see!

Congratulations Abbey44!

It's been a good week, and am pleased I've managed to avoid relying on processed meat and cheese so much.

I bought a bread replacement type thing made from konjac (same as the slim pasta/rice) called LoDough, and it is truly bizarre. A bit like the polystyrene discs you get under a supermarket pizza. If fried in butter it's quite good as a vehicle for cheese/pate/nut butter but it's bloody expensive. Not sure I'd buy anymore.

Alwaysinmyheart · 02/02/2018 14:17

Chips, yum! I'm not a fan of celeriac either but feel like I should persevere with it, I'm a 'super taster' so lots of veg taste quite bitter to me. Just saw a recipe for cauliflower 'tater tots' which looked quite yummy ( although they did contain panko breadcrumbs which don't sound v low carb!)

TheWayOfTheWorld · 02/02/2018 14:36

Excellent news Abbey44! Star

Quick question for the old timers. I did an exercise session at lunchtime and towards the end I started to get stomach ache and had to finish early.

I've just spent the last hour and a half lying in bed in absolutely agony with waves of griping/cramping and burning - not lower down (which would suggest I needed the loo) but right in the middle (above my tummy button). I've noticed this sort of burning sensation before over the last couple of weeks but it has never been this bad. I'm now worried I've discovered an intolerance or I've got a stomach ulcer Sad

prettybird · 02/02/2018 15:27

Can't help TheWay - never experienced anything like that Confused

And I do the Shred (or Ripped) 4 days a week, plus cycle 3.2 miles to a Pilates class - and do so with plenty of energy and no ill-effects.

Have you had any tonic or were wearing tight jeans/skirt/leggings? I used to get heartburn that sounds similar to what you were experiencing and which would only go away if I lay flat or undid the offending item of clothing.

GailLondon · 02/02/2018 15:33

littleladylawyer I also got a trial pack of LoDough! I made one piece as a pizza base and will make a quiche with the other.
Yes it has a bit of a strange texture! I dont think I would want to eat it just raw as a sandwich. And too expensive to buy regularly.
The pizza actually came out really well though

BlackMozart · 02/02/2018 16:00

abbey44 that is fantastic, well done 👏
blacktea it was me asking about herring so thanks for the suggestion.
I have just spent the last three hours attacking my office at home and have filled three large bin bags with paper for burning 😮
It still looks mess but it is getting better and it is very satisfying. So far I’ve only had scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, two coffees, and water so far today. Off to get something to nibble on...

Boatsonthewater · 02/02/2018 16:02

I would like to join but could someone distill the rules for me? if it's too complicated i won't bother! I am going to Rome for a week in three weeks so it'll be impossible to do there! Don't know whether to wait or start and have a break?

BIWI · 02/02/2018 16:11

Just read the link on the spreadsheet - honestly it's not complicated! The whole thing about bootcamp is that it has been designed to be simple. Only 10 rules!

littleladylawyer · 02/02/2018 16:31

GailLondon quiche sounds like a good idea for it. I tried a pizza with it but think I'll stick with fathead in future! It made me really thirsty.

I've got a leaving party for someone at work tonight, looking forward to a prosecco but I'm too shattered to stay out long so shouldn't be more than one glass!

BerylStreep · 02/02/2018 16:49

Boatsonthewater welcome. I actually find Italian food works really well on this way of eating. It's not all pizza and pasta.

O m g 'kale crisps' !!! I just made some and they were so good. I might have gone a bit overboard with the salt but I sprinkled a bit of vinegar over and were lovely and crunchy. My new TV snack 😊

YoLoHogwomanay · 02/02/2018 17:17

theway get to a doctor or hospital. Don't mess about. This sort of severe abdominal pain is often appendicitis or very inflamed organs like liver or pancreas. Get it checked out to put your mind at rest if nothing else. Or to get urgent treatment if it's life threatening. They won't think you are time wasting. Promise.

tip: nobody should ignore this sort of pain. It's there for a reason.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 02/02/2018 17:57

YoLo thank you Flowers. It has calmed down now but still a bit gripe-y. DH is a doctor and I shall be cornering him as soon as he gets home. As long as he doesn't tell me to take some fluids, painkillers and rest Hmm

JingsMahBucket · 02/02/2018 18:34

@Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es I’m sorry you’re feeling mentally bad. I hear you. That’s when it’s the worst time to mind what you eat.

I also struggle with eating so much fat. Sometimes I just want fresh vegetables and I know I could have that but then the issue of using a lot of oil comes up for me. Also, I’m not a huge cream lover but I’m getting a bit used to it. I mostly still use it in omelettes and such. I’m still yet to make ice cream with the cream I have. I was going to do that last night before I left for my trip and realized there’s not enough room in my freezer. :)

Anyway, what helps me a bit is actually cooking real recipes. I tend to get stuck in a “pan fried meat/fish plus salad” rut so I get bored and fall off the wagon a bit. Have you tried looking up recipes that are very low carb but use spiralized vegetables, perhaps? Take a look at the Inspiralized blog written by Ali Maffucci inspiralized.com/. If anything, that might give you a way to broaden your thinking regarding substituting vegetables for pasta and rice, etc.

I hope that helps. Let us know if you need more help. Hugs and Flowers

YoLoHogwomanay · 02/02/2018 19:11

theway I PMd you earlier. Good that DH is a doctor. Sometimes!

DakotaFanny · 02/02/2018 19:11

I’m starving! Got friends coming for a curry. Planning on having the chicken tikka and salad (not masala). I THINK that will be okay??

Twoo · 02/02/2018 19:15

Hi Peeps

I gain great motivation from the thread. Thank you everyone. Ive loved reading all about the progress being made. Hopefully things will get moving for those who are stalling.

I’m a daily weigher or waily for short Grin. My weight is definatley moving in the right direction at the moment. Slow and steady. I once met a lady on a cruise who was an older person, very slim and trim. She said she weighed the same as she did when she married. She weighed daily and if it crept upwards she would adjust her food intake. She looked great.

Yesterday’s Menu:-
B - None as not hungry
L - Mozzarella, Spinach, Coffee with cream.
D - Home made bolognaise. Courgettes, sprouts & leeks sautéed in butter. All with grated Parmesan.

Today’s Menu
B - None as not hungry.
L - 2 boiled eggs, coleslaw, spinach. Grated Parmesan. Coffee with cream.

D - Starter of smoked ham, smoked cheese, coleslaw, 1/2 sundried tomato cut in little pieces. Main - bolognaise and cabbage sautéed in butter.

YoLoHogwomanay · 02/02/2018 19:18

welcome boats. We will have you converted in no time! Wink

then you will be boring everyone you know with your 'secret to success' in your weight loss.

I do warn you though. You have to commit to it properly for it to work. Half measures will not give you the results you want, whatever they are.

which camp do you fall into? A tiny bit overweight and just want to slim down a little further to look leaner? Or obese/very overweight for a long time, have tried many diets in the past and only getting fatter over time, with a penchant for disordered eating?

Plenty of the latter on bootcamp including some long termers, and a handful of the former. it works for everyone but it's not a quick fix unless you are already fairly slim.

BumbleBeef30 · 02/02/2018 19:23

B egg, sausage, lots of bacon (at a friend’s house)
L nothing (still far too full from the breakfast)
D rump steak and stir fry veg
W about 2 litres so need to drink another 1.5 before bed

velocitykate · 02/02/2018 19:38

Please could I join? I'm planning on starting tomorrow (after I've been shopping). I'm 172.5 lb. I need to get down to 140 lb. Last wine tonight

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 02/02/2018 19:47

Bit of a traumatic week for me - funeral of a close family member. At the wake I suddenly felt I couldn’t go on without a cup of sweet tea, and then had cake and crisps with it, plus a carby supper when home that night. Tried to get back on the wagon the next day, but struggled badly and again succumbed to carbs. Anyway, I think the last couple of days have been ok, but that’s why I’ve been absent - I haven’t been able to face recording my food, or indeed getting on to any scales. Will just see what has happened weight-wise on Monday and then go from there.

GrandOldDukeOfPorkiness · 02/02/2018 19:52

So today was:

B creamy coffee and bowl of kidney bean-less chilli
S olives
L reheated chicken tikka with aubergine and (hmm) some butternut squash
D bowl of kidney bean-less chilli
W barely a litre...

BlackMozart · 02/02/2018 20:16

Sending lots of good wishes to you grandold on your traumatic week. 💐💐
I think you did amazingly well with your eating considering what you are going through.

lisbapalea · 02/02/2018 20:43

Wow grandold - that does sound tough and I think you've done brilliantly to get back on track after that kind of event.

I can report back that the pork I cooked was delicious. Slow coooking it under foil in the oven meant there were loads of juices to stick into the stir fry once I fried the pork pieces to make them crispy.
