New Year, New Start Week 2: This WoE works!

Welcome to Week 2 - the one where many of us (especially the newbies) will see the biggest drops. For those that don't, the drops will come. We will have seen other benefits too: brighter eyes, smaller waist (with the reduction of dangerous visceral fat from around our organs) - and all without feeling hungry Smile Week 2 is also when I find that my pschological urge to snack reduces.

Remember that you still need to adhere to the Rules. This is not a forgiving Way of Eating and if you cheat, you will set back the process of getting your body to adapt to fat burning. Only one more week of being ultra strict - it is only one more week Smile If you're thinking of cheating, come on here and we will talk you down. It really helps if you are prepared and have low carb snacks with you, or drink some water when you think you are hungry.

Keep drinking the required water ( StuntNun has explained why this is important). Avoid nuts and seeds (unless you are veggie), all fruit (you can look forward to the odd treat of berries from next week) - and no alcohol or artificial sweetender for another week.

The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness is here to remind you to keep to the straight and narrow with the Rules and with resources to advise you. You can weigh-in if you choose to, but it is not compulsory. Over the weeks, your weight loss will start to average 1-2lb a week, sometimes more sometimes less .

The Week 1 Spillover thread is here.

I can't keep up with the thread at all or indeed some of your wooshes. However although i think I'll just have lost one more measly lb on Monday, I feel better in myself - really really well actually and I had shingles and then whooping cough (yes confirmed) in December.

Most importantly, my work trousers feel looser. They actually feel as though I'm 7lb less looser which is what makes the actual loss all the more disappointing. Oh, and my end of the day slightly puffy ankles have gone.

Has anyone else had this?

StuntNun · 20/01/2018 10:41

Just a note of caution on the flaxseed: I find it gives me a bellyache and I get a lot of water retention. Other people are fine with it though. I wonder whether it's the amount of fibre in it.

I got the Tom Kerridge cook book and I'm not impressed. All the recipes seem to revolve around cauliflower which DH will not eat under any circumstances the big weirdo. however I also got the Real Meal Revolution cook book on the recommendation of one of my clients and that has loads of good recipes in.

littleladylawyer · 20/01/2018 10:46

Sorry to hear about your DS BlackMozart, that's really awful.

We've got friends staying and I cooked a big chili last night. Took my portion out before I added the beans and had it with cauli rice and cheese, yum. Avoided the hm brownies they brought but did have prosecco.

Going to a lovely country pub for lunch, I've had a look at the menu and the mains aren't great, but they do tapas so I'm going to have some small plates.

Hope everyone has a lovely Saturday Smile

Scabbersley · 20/01/2018 10:49

Morning all. Still here and lurking. I've been bootcamp liting for health reasons and am happy to report that I've lost 3lbs so far in the last fortnight. Took me a while to get back into it. Most importantly I feel great and no palpitations!

Yesterday was a good example menu!
B: coffee cream slices of cheese with butter and marmite
L: corned beef and sauerkraut and cheese, plus sprouts! Amazingly no farty tummy!
D: small steak, avocado, spinach

But today I will have a protein roll. The rolls and the odd.milky tea are keeping my carbs up enough to avoid palpitations but still to slowly lose weight. My new goal is 11.7. At 12.1 this am.

TheWayOfTheWorld · 20/01/2018 10:56

Hope your son is better today BlackMozart and well done on not diving into the choc/cake/booze Flowers

Mum sounds like you did really well! I bet you feel a ton better this morning too as you are not kicking yourself for having all those chips and chocolate Smile. I am not there yet but when I did BC in May I went to a BBQ where there was lots of food and puds - my appetite had decreased so I was satisfied with a skinny burger, salad and water plus a small glass of fizz and I actually felt smug (Blush) because I watching everyone around me tucking into puddings AND I DIDNT WANT ONE! I am hoping to reach that happy place again on this BC.

prettybird yes please to the "bread" recipe.

Yesterday's food;
B: fried mushrooms and bacon, creamy coffee
L: bolognaise with celeriac rice and mozzarella
D: pan fried chicken breast with Parmesan crust and asparagus and spinach sautéed in butter
S: none (a small miracle!)
W: 2.5l

DH cracked open a bottle of pink cava and had a mini magnum for pud - was this >< close to caving on the cava but just managed to resist.

I am going to make the low card brownies tomorrow for the odd treat next week.

Wh0KnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 20/01/2018 11:04

BlackMozart - just read back up, sorry to hear about your son, that's terrible.

mrsglowglow · 20/01/2018 11:16

How awful blackmozart. I feel for your Son and all of you. You are so strong dealing with it so well.

Just Mother update on the blood donation yesterday. I don't mean to go on about it but just want to give info for anyone who might be planning on going it soon. I feel terrible - like I've been doing really heavy exercise and any little activity is a struggle. I fell asleep on the sofa last night and this morning had to push myself to get out of bed. I'm hoping by tomorrow to feel better but really feeling low. Just a warning really as wasn't expecting this.

mrsglowglow · 20/01/2018 11:17

other not mother .

YoLoHogwomanay · 20/01/2018 11:31

I haven't commented much on this bc on other people's posts I usually never shut up but 4 glasses of prosecco mumofapickle Shock . That would have laid me out cold!

If you had decided to indulge, then why didn't just 1 glass do?

hands prettybird back the BIWIstick

IamSam - StuntNun has explained the science of why this WoE is so unforgiving of aberrations in the Week 1 thread(s). I'm not going to try to duplicate her lovely clear explanation, but iirc it's to do with our bodies wanting to refill our glycogen stores and extra water.

Drink plenty of water today - and take it as a lesson learned! Shock

BlackMozart - how ShockAngrySad about your son. Hope he's feeling better and that the police and insurance are helpful. What a stressful time for you and well done for resisting the siren call of wine on the night (if not yesterday Hmm) . In these circumstances, I'll let you off the 2 squares of dark chocolate on the night and applaud you for just eating the topping of the pizza not sure I would be able to resist I will however have to get out the Big Stick for the Pinot Grigio if you're going to have wine after such a stressful week at least make it a decent one Wink

CointreauVersial - even though you could have killed for your dh's meal (you could have had the duck burger with greens rather than chips), you still ate well Grin Doesn't that say something great about this WoE, that you can enjoy food without feeling starving and worrying about the calorie count?! Smile

Titus - hope you are able to navigate the meal at your friends. Do they know that you are low carbing? Is your dh also supportive? It might help if he understands what you are trying to achieve. You can also cook some delicious fully low carb meals using the recipe thread and he'll be able to see he doesn't need to miss out on good food.

Always - there is a flat bread recipe in Tom Kerridge's book which might serve as a substitute for naan bread. I'll let you know what it's like once I've tried it.

prettybird · 20/01/2018 11:57

I'm now going to catch up with more recent posts as I had to drop dh off for some corporate hospitality at the Warriors v Exeter game.

I see that there is some Big Sticking required, judging by the most recent post! Shock

OP posts:
prettybird · 20/01/2018 12:13

Mumofapickle - as YoLo has already pointed out - four glasses of prosecco?! Shock In future, two at most if you're out and remember, your body will use the alcohol for fuel rather than the fat you are adapting it to use. I'm sure the 4 glasses of Wine are also responsible for the chocolate and jelly beans! Hmm But well done for resisting the chips and crisps. As you are discovering, this WoE is also about changing your mindset - so resisting things like that become easier. Smile

Raindrops - 1lb is still 1lb - but as we have repeatedly said, it's also about the NSVs. And as you are discovering, one of those is weight re-distribution. So not only are you looking better but you are also healthier, as the fat shifts from around your organs. Drinking more water, so reducing water retention, will be why your puffy ankles aren't happening.

The other benefit I find on this WoE is more even energy levels. I no longer have the "mid afternoon dip". I used to be notorious for obviously falling asleep in afternoon meetings Blush

Hi everyone,
Black what a horrible shock for your son and you Thanks I hope you're both feeling a bit better today.

I'm a bit cross that I went it for SIL's bday the other night at a Thai restaurant. All the currys has a tablespoon of palm sugar (the recipe was online) so I had fried chicken wings, but could tell they'd been dipped in flour before cooking. By then I was really hungry aargh so i ate them. Im cross with myself for not speaking up and sending them back.

Pretty good day yesterday foodwise though. Pret does a nice tuna niçoise salad with under 3 carbs, under 6 with the dressing with has lots of fat in it so I've been having it on days when I'm working out and about.

All the best,
T

I'm struggling to keep up with the thread and I'm sure this has been on here already but struggling to find it (wish we could search the thread) 🤔 but after two bootcamps I am finally ready to try these sprouts of deliciousness......can someone tell me the best way to cook them please xx

Also I hadn't seen this mentioned before - but I have just been to Aldi and found 3 types of frozen cauliflower rice (plain, with parsley and Mediterranean with courgette tomato and peppers), though the last one is 4.4g per 100g.

Hope everyone has a lovely weekend free from carby twatiness 😍

prettybird · 20/01/2018 13:25

There's no point in beating yourself up for things you don't have control about when you're out Mimosa Smile Unless you are coeliac/genuinely need to be gluten free, then it want worth sending them back. You were otherwise making good choices. Smile

Right, I am tidying up my room and tried on my ski trousers Blush

The white pair I wore two years ago, when I was just under a stone lighter. The grey pair I can just about squeeze into but they are uncomfortably tight. The coral pair fit fine.

I go skiing at the end of March so I would love to fit in the white ones again, but at the very least I am aiming for the coral ones to be baggy and the grey ones to fit comfortably. Wish me luck!

Lizard - if you're on a laptop/PC you can search, but one of the disadvantages of the Talk app is that you can't search.

Buttered Microwaved Brussels: trim base off brussels, put in bowl with slabs of butter on top. Cover with plate/cling film. Microwave for c2 minutes. Shoogle technical term . Microwave for another c2minutes. Season with salt/Lo-salt and pepper.

Leave to cool slightly or you will burn your mouth .

Exact timings depend on the strength of your microwave and how many brussels you are doing.

Enjoy! Smile

You'll be wearing the white ones TheWayOfTheWorld Smile

I have every confidence! Grin

Thanks @prettybird, really tasty - just tucking in now 😍

headoutofthesand · 20/01/2018 14:29

Black Mozart how is your DS doing today? It will take him a while to get over that. And for you & the rest of your family.

Wayof I might take some pictures of myself in different outfits so I can compare & contrast. We're away just after Easter and I really want my summer dresses to be looser than they were in August.

Pretty I am in awe of your skills at answering everyone.

Pleased to hear that I'll have some fellow hard core boot campers. I just want my brain to realise that green veg is going to be my staple food going forward and that will involve with continuing to play with a few more veggie recipes. I like Cherries suggestion of not adding things like carrot but not picking them out either. I may also have a G&T once a week.

prettybird · 20/01/2018 14:31

I've started a new recipe thread with the "recipe" it's really just a cooking method for buttered brussels Smile. I'll link to it when I'm back on the laptop.

I probably need to stick to Bootcamp rather than BC Lite. I also find substitutions such as high protein rolls too psychologically challenging, and end up bingeing.

BerylStreep · 20/01/2018 14:48

WayoftheWorld We're also going skiing at the end of March. I haven't tried on any of my salopettes yet. I have 2 pairs - a skinny pair which I love and have owned for 15 years! and my fat pair.

The coral ones you have look lovely!

BlackMozart · 20/01/2018 14:49

Hi everyone and a massive thank you to all of you who have sent your kind messages. I can’t remember everyone so please accept a general thanks.
The good news is DS’s teeth are going to be ok without it costing a fortune and more importantly for him they will be done on Wednesday. The next thing is his car but that is still being examined for forensics. We’ll get there with it all.
prettybird you made me laugh out loud with your Pinot Grigio comment 😀😀 you are so right! I think I might just pour the rest down the sink and I will comfort myself with the thought that if I had opened a really nice bottle of wine (which I do have) I would be drinking the rest.

BIWI · 20/01/2018 14:49

Afternoon all! Am back from Oz. Landed very early this am, and didn't get that much sleep on the last leg of our flight (I had the Mumsnet nightmare of a small child constantly kicking the back of my seat!).

I'm trying to keep going and not go for a quick nap this afternoon, although it's a very tempting prospect.
