Preparing for Bootcamp - starting on Monday 9 October!

BIWI · 06/10/2017 09:06

Lots of people have signed up for this one - no doubt thinking about Christmas and squeezing into that little black dress!

So in advance, here's some stuff to think about so you can get planning over the weekend.

1- How long is Bootcamp?

Bootcamp lasts for 10 weeks, so our final weigh-in will be Monday 18 December.

The first two weeks of Bootcamp are the strictest, to help you shift your body away from burning carbs for fuel, to burning fat for fuel.

After the two weeks are up, you can move to Bootcamp Light, which is a little bit more relaxed. If, though, strict Bootcamp is working for you, you can stay on that. Or you can do a hybrid, following Bootcamp during the week but switching to Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

2 - Bootcamp should be easy to follow

There is absolutely no need to weigh anything, or count the carbs in anything. Nor do we count calories. Just follow the rules (only 10 of them!) and you will be fine.

Low carbing isn't the easiest WOE (way of eating), because our contemporary diet is built around carbs. Just take a look at any high street coffee shop or takeaway - all carb central!

And you may find the first few days tough going, until your body adjusts, but once you're into it, it's a simple plan. It's made that way because I'm a lazy arse who can't be bothered with all that weighing and counting!

3 - Foods that you're not allowed to eat during Bootcamp

Absolutely NONE of the following:

pasta/noodles
rice
bread (in any form - so no wraps, bagels, pittas, naans, chapattis, etc)
barley/oats/quinoa (or other grains)
flour
cake/muffins/brownies/flapjacks
potatoes
other sweet vegetables - especially sweet potatoes/sweetcorn (the clue is in the name!)
pulses/legumes (e.g. peas, lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans etc)
balsamic vinegar (it's made differently from other vinegars and is very high in carbs - wine vinegar is fine)

4 - Well what can I eat then?!

We're aiming to switch the ratio of macronutrients from carbs:protein:fat to fat:protein:carbs.

This is a high fat diet. This is something that blows most people's minds when they first start out low carbing. We've been told for the last 30-40 years that fat is bad for us, but this simply isn't true. It's a claim that was initially based on bad science and given further credence by politicians and the media.

Good sources of fat include olive oil, coconut oil, butter, cheese and cream. You will find that not only will your food taste absolutely delicious, but it's also very satiating. You will not be hungry on a low carb diet!

Other things to include in your diet are fattier cuts of meat and fish. Stop seeking out low fat chicken breast with no skin, and embrace the loveliness of roast chicken with lots of gorgeous crispy skin!

Buy mince with a higher fat content. It will have a much better taste than low fat stuff.

Fry your food rather than grill it, etc.

Your carbs on this WOE will come mainly from vegetables and salad. When I post the spreadsheet on Monday morning you'll see on the tabs at the bottom that there's a list of vegetables and their carb counts - if you stick to veg that's around 4g carbs per 100g or less, you'll be fine. Higher carb veg occasionally is OK.

If you've been used to basing your meals around pasta or rice - which lots of us do, especially if you buy a lot of ready meals, you'll have to re-think your approach to meals/cooking.

Here are some examples of meals that I might cook:

•Roast chicken with roasted vegetables• (e.g. shallots, leeks, fennel, courgettes, peppers, cauliflower). Veg roasted in olive oil, and oil or butter on the chicken skin

Marinated salmon fillets with stir-fried vegetables (salmon marinated for c. 20-30 minutes in olive oil, with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, lemon juice and Chinese 5 spice powder); veg could include mange tout, shallots, baby sweetcorn, celery.

... or serve it with egg fried 'rice' made from cauliflower

This is really easy and tastes surprisingly good - trust me! I resisted cauliflower rice for a long time, because I thought it would have too strong a cauliflower taste, but I was wrong.

To make this, separate the florets of a cauliflower, wash them, and then either pulse in a food processor until it's blitzed into small rice-like pieces, or use a box grater (this way is a bit messy, but works well if you don't have a food processor). In a wok or large frying pan, fry this in some light oil or coconut oil. It's all cooked through, which won't take long, push it all to the edges of the pan, and then in the 'hole' in the middle, add a little bit more oil, and then pour in a beaten egg. Let it set a little bit, and then stir it through the cauliflower, so it forms shreds

I have a new favourite very quick lunch. Avocado chips and fried eggs. It is Lovely. Another day I also fried up a patty of leftover celeriac mash, some leftover sprouts and had that with fried egg on.

Veryflummoxed · 08/10/2017 11:48

The the recipe thread. I can’t find a way to search it. I’m using my phone app. Do I need to be on a pc to search it? There was a lovely curried lime chicken but I can’t find it now.

blackteaplease · 08/10/2017 11:59

Veryflummoxed I don't how you search in the app. I am using the mobile browser and you can use Find on Page under more at the top near the webaddress.

I hope that makes sense

wombattoo · 08/10/2017 12:00

Here is my tip for bootcamp - take some body measurements or find an item of clothing that is tight/snug. I had a spell where the scales were hardly moving. I lost only a few pounds but dropped a dress size. It can be a real motivator when the scales are being stubborn.
DO NOT GET TOO HUNG UP ABOUT WEIGHING.

Very - sorry I can't help. I don't post on my phone.

bellalurgy · 08/10/2017 12:01

All set for tomorrow Grin

I regret not taking pictures when I first started - at least I did until I saw the pics of me taken at my daughter's graduation! I'd lost 2 stone by that point...... I was gutted I still looked so awful!

Anyway, I've now taken some more from all the unflattering angles. I know I've lost weight, I'm wearing smaller clothes but my head still hasn't adjusted. I've given it a few weeks to catch up but nope, not happened yet.

I have no idea what I'll be like when I've got to goal as my new shape has to take account of being flat chested. Might need lots of new clothes, shame Wink

Pictures done, food in (always low carb now anyway), weight recorded, decided on long term goal.... I'm ready Halo

blackteaplease · 08/10/2017 12:10

Ugh, I try to avoid full length pictures. I don't even have a full length mirror in my house so in my head I am fine and not at all overweight.

However, my dance teacher videoed our routine in class last week and I looked terrible. It's an excellent motivator.

BIWI · 08/10/2017 12:13

@Veryflummoxed - I don't know if you can search in a thread.

I'm thinking that I'll create some new recipe threads, but each one focused on an ingredient, e.g. a thread for recipes for beef, one for chicken, etc.

But is the recipe you were looking for, in this post:

Wonderful lime, green chilli, spinach, mint and yoghurt curry sauce - I did with tofu - recipe is pheasant - but would be fantastic with
Chicken:

GrumpyOldFucker - I have seen you and added you to the bottom of the spreadsheet. Welcome

wombattoo · 08/10/2017 12:18

I don't think I have mentioned on this thread but BIWI will start a new thread tomorrow. The OP will contain the link to the spreadsheet. If anyone finds that they cannot enter their name (at the bottom) or their weight - just post it on the thread. I will read through every evening and add you to the sheet.

buttonmoonb4tea · 08/10/2017 12:44

Can I sign up pls. Not even sure what weight I am but will weigh in and add to the spreadsheet.

Think low carb will work for me as nothing else seems to

2014newme · 08/10/2017 13:39

Going to harry potter studios for the day. Any suggestions for low carb foods I can take?

Veryflummoxed · 08/10/2017 13:55

Thanks blacktea. I’ve tried but can’t find the way in you suggest.

Thanks BIWI I don’t think it was that one as it wasn’t pheasant. That sounds very good though. It may not have been on the recipe thread of course, just posted on the main thread.

Putting the recipes under headings does sound good.

Veryflummoxed · 08/10/2017 14:01

Very jealous 2014. We went last year, it was fab and I want to go again.
Boiled eggs
Egg muffins
Pork scratchings
Cold sausages
Ham roll ups ( fill with cream cheese lettuce etc)
Cold chicken
Cold roasted meats
Pepperami
Exploded babybel
Cheese cheese and more cheese
Celery
Cucumber
Olives
Cherry toms

RubyGoat · 08/10/2017 14:38

What recipe does everyone use to make pork scratchings please? DH made mine last time but I'm just being nosy...

Also, has anyone successfully managed to convince their OH of the benefits of this WOE? I think that meal planning etc would be a lot easier if DH & I ate the same but he's stubborn (keeps stealing MY pork scratchings though). He needs to lose about 4 st & isn't doing anything about it, mainly because he's a sugar addict.

2014newme · 08/10/2017 14:40

Did you feel ill when you first started this?

ShastaBeast · 08/10/2017 14:45

Oh gosh just in time to join in again. I've totally stalled despite being reasonably well behaved. I need a push and some inspiration food wise - I'm getting very bored of my current food and it was better suited to summer. Low carbs stews and casseroles are needed, especially to take into work.

Yoghurt and raspberries for breakfast (no fruit tomo I promise) with creamy coffee. Pork belly in the oven for dinner. Having a cup of tea and will have plenty of green veg with the pork.

I need a stern lecture on drinking water as it's possibly my weakest point.

BIWI · 08/10/2017 15:12

@2014newme some people do feel ill for a couple of days - it's called carb flu. The Diet Doctor calls it induction flu.

This is what he writes about it:

By far the most common side effect is called the induction flu. It’s what makes some people feel really poorly 2-3 days after starting low carb.

Here are the common symptoms:

Headache
Fatigue
Dizziness
Light nausea
Irritability

These side effects rapidly subside as your body adapts and your fat burning increases. Within a week, they are usually gone.

The reason for this is that carbohydrate-rich foods may increase water retention in your body. When you stop eating high-carb foods you’ll lose excess water through your kidneys. This can result in dehydration and a lack of salt during the first week, before the body has adapted, resulting in the symptoms above.

You can minimize the induction flu by drinking more fluids and by temporarily increasing your salt intake. A good option is to drink a cup of bouillon/broth one or two times a day. This usually keeps the induction flu minor or even non-existent.

Alternatively, drink a few extra glasses of water and put more salt on your food

I usually advise a hot drink made from Oxo/Bovril or Marmite, as I really don't know what he means by 'broth'!

The other reason you might not feel great for a couple of days is that your electrolyte balance is disturbed - as well as sodium, you need magnesium and potassium.

Good food sources of these include salmon, spinach, avocado and full fat natural yoghurt.

Oncewaswho · 08/10/2017 15:12

Well, after thinking about it a bit more, I am out, it's too hardcore for me. I can cut out the bulk of the carbs (already doing so) but it's the little things like the milk in tea, the bit of flour to thicken a stew, salad dressings or a few nuts, not being able to try the DCs baking. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to answer my questions and good luck to you all.

BIWI · 08/10/2017 15:15

@LegoCaltrops - the best way to persuade him is to show him that it works! When he sees you losing weight, yet by eating lots of lovely food, that should make him stop and think.

OP posts:
poorbuthappy · 08/10/2017 15:21

Well I’m 6/7 weeks in. I can’t remember when I started. Confused

poorbuthappy · 08/10/2017 15:22

Sorry posted too soon....

And I’m 10lb down.
GrinShock

So bring on BC to get me off the wine!!

wecantallbeperfect · 08/10/2017 15:22

Newbie here 😬 I lurked on the last thread and managed to get from 12 stone to 11 stone. Need a push to get back on and get back to 9st 7ish. Biwi can I ask a question about high cholesterol? Mine is off the scale according to bloods last week 😕 Can I still do LCHF?

Veryflummoxed · 08/10/2017 15:28

Lego my dh does it with me, (actually* he does the cooking). Men loose much faster than women on this way of eating which may be a persuasive point. Otherwise hide your pork scratchings till he comes on board.* Wink

2014newme · 08/10/2017 15:34

I think I'd have to start next week it's dts birthdays this week. I suffer with migraine so I can't afford any triggers which would set that off.

Veryflummoxed · 08/10/2017 15:38

once* I think if giving up the milk in tea is one step too far you could keep the milk and do the rest. Nuts are only out for the first two weeks. If you need to thicken stew make sure there’s a low carb root veg in at (swede, turnip, celeriac) and mash it down a bit. You should be dressing your salad; olive oil, vinegar (but not balsamic) mayonnaise herbs, mustard. The children’s baking is a tough one. No answer to that. Any way good luck with what you decide
