HFLC and cholesterol

Fourarmsv2 · 26/03/2015 18:42

My cholesterol has fallen after one year on a HFLC diet (Harcombe).

But why has it? Struggling to find any research as to the mechanisms behind it.

Results for anyone interested:

Total cholesterol: down from 4.9 to 4.8 (Total cholesterol should be 5.0 millimoles per litre (mmol/L) or lower. The average in the UK is 5.6 mmol/l for women).

HDL: up from 1.6 to 2 (HDL level should be above 1 mmol/L)

Total to HDL ratio: down from 3.1 to 2.4 (should be below 4).

Hello Fourarms I was thinking about you recently. Have you managed to stick to THD? I know you lost loads of weight.
I've really struggled with low carb and have piled weight on since Jan.
Sorry can't help with the cholesterol Blush

Still on THD. Lapsed a little too much and too often over Feb half term and gained about 6-8lb. Stuck to plan this week though and it's back off. Lost 5 stone all together.

Been at target for 8 months now.

What's changed for you since Jan?

Just can't seem to get into the groove again. I agree with the woe and it all makes sense to me but I can't seem to stop binging on carbs and sugar. And I mean binging. It's making me miserable but I can't stop it. Don't know what's going on really

Wombat22 · 27/03/2015 20:13

You've done so well. I was on your first Harcombe thread

Try reading Gary Taubes' book "The Diet Delusion" - it's a bit of a weighty tome, but there's a lot in there about cholesterol and how low carbing can improve your levels.

Thanks BIWI. Off for Easter now so will see if that's available on kindles.

Wombat - sorry to hear that :( I've been very lucky in that I don't really suffer from carb cravings. But I do still have treats. So naughtiness to me would be a whole bag of nuts, a block of feta, a ball of mozzarella, raspberries and extra thick double cream. Very dangerous to mix with carbs though!

Could you stock up on LC treats? Eat lots of fat - I'm always most likely to snack when I've had a neutral breakfast e.g. Scrambled eggs.

Funnily enough I've been having scrambled eggs.
I've given myself a kick up the backside and am determined to get back on track. Got a holiday coming up at the end of June so that's my goal.
Thanks for the advice Smile

It's tough, isn't it, Wombat? Your head absolutely has to be in the right place, because it's not an easy WOE to follow day in/day out.

But a really good idea to have something like a holiday to focus on.

Why not get your holiday clothes out to try on (not ones that you really know you'll not fit in to, but ones that you're close to fitting into) and try them on each week? Then you'll see your progress.

That's a good idea BIWI thanks. I'll be back on course and ready for the May bootcamp. See you there Wink

Oops! Blush
