2015 January Low Carb Bootcamp - the questions thread!

BIWI · 18/01/2015 19:24

Evening all!

I'm setting up this thread this evening, because I have to be up and out early tomorrow morning.

So, here is the thread for you to ask any questions that you might have about low carbing.

The chat thread tends to move really quickly in the first couple of weeks, so if you post questions on there you're not always guaranteed to get an answer, as it just might not be spotted. So use this thread to post any questions.

Stunt - great tip about grinding up pork scratchings!

janx · 20/01/2015 20:37

Am going to have a fair few evenings out this week -mixture of celebrations and seeing family I didn't see at Christmas... So I am going have to really be strict with myself. We are going to Belgos one night which seems to have a few options. Anyway care to advise me on menu? Was thinking Pork Belly without the mash and sauce?

I went to Belgos a couple of weeks back. The goats cheese salad is lovely and you could have moules with veg or salad rather than chips.

janx · 20/01/2015 20:46

Thanks Olives -love goats cheese. Don't think I could have moules with chips and bread Hmm

Bootcamp Light isn't about adding more dairy!

It means that you can eat slightly more carby veg, some nuts and fruit, in the form of berries. Along with occasional alcohol.

If you're breastfeeding, I don't think you should be doing Bootcamp - it's too severe.

I'm trying to wean him. But perhaps that's why I'm not loosing much weight. I'll revise the bootcamp light rules. Ive just bought some macadamia nuts, and have blueberries in the fridge.

Can you loose weight just doing Bootcamp light?

BIWI · 20/01/2015 23:07

Yes - just don't go mad with the fruits and nuts!

Mootime, i only did bc lite last time and lost weight fine :)

For breakfast i'd have a handful of (frozen) berries and ff yoghurt, or coconut porridge
Lunch and dinner normal bc food, handful of nuts as snack in the evening or a line of dark choc

StuntNun · 21/01/2015 09:14

I lost 30 lb on Bootcamp Light Mootime, I started while breastfeeding a 7mo.

I think the problem with caffiene on a low carb diet is it can trigger an insulin release which can lead to fat storage. I seem to remember reading about in Zoe Harcobme's book. I think as long as you are not mainlining espressos from dusk till dawn, the odd cup will not do much harm.

mootime · 21/01/2015 10:20

They sound like very nice additions to my diet! What is coconut porridge?

StuntNun · 21/01/2015 10:36

Both decaf tea and coffee have improved drastically in recent years. I buy Tesco own brand decaf tea and it tastes exactly the same as the 'real' stuff. I'm pregnant so I restrict myself to three cups of tea a day and the rest is decaf or herbal. If you like bulletproof coffee then even decaf BPC gives you a boost because of the coconut oil.

yongnian · 21/01/2015 11:45

mootime I'm another who did bc lite whilst bfing and lost 28lb Smile

yongnian · 21/01/2015 11:47

Oo thanks for that sayra

mootime · 21/01/2015 12:04

I'm wishing I started earlier! I'd always heard you couldn't low carb at all when BFing... Oh well, better late than never. And I sneaked on the scales this morning and it seems to be working again.Grin

BIWI · 21/01/2015 12:16

That's good to hear, mootime!

Opinions vary wildly regarding coffee/caffeine. Research keeps changing the goal posts with some saying it triggers insulin rise and others saying it doesn't. Some plans ban it and others actively encourage it. Its a bit like the dairy thing where you have to find your own path.

I've tried dropping off coffee but it made things worse for me as I tend to rely on the caffeine to enhance my pain killers. Also, I find it far easier to do without a pudding if I can have a nice coffee after a meal. It seems to have no effect on my blood glucose. That said, I don't add anything to my coffee and sometimes, if you are blobbing in cream, it can add up in a day.

Almahart · 21/01/2015 13:05

Aaargh! So confusing, should I be eating cream for the fat or avoiding it cos of carbs Grin ?

BIWI · 21/01/2015 13:12

Not many carbs in cream - but also you may need to avoid because it's dairy! Grin

So a sort of trial and error? And..... When I ate butter and olives in desperation at work at 11am, was that an okay snack?

Amaxapax · 21/01/2015 17:23

How can I know if I'm in ketosis? I've done low carb before, but I've never had the funny taste in my mouth. I had an ongoing headache for the first several days, but now I feel fine. Not amazing...just fine. Is it possible to be in ketosis without really knowing it? This is a question I've been pondering for about three years, by the way.

BIWI · 21/01/2015 20:11

Butter and olives are perfect!

Don't worry about being in ketosis - you don't need to be to lose weight.

And if you're drinking plenty of water, it can mask the symptoms like the funny taste and bad breath anyway.

As long as you're losing weight, that's all you need to worry about!

I found out today that I possibly have gallstones Sad

The doc didn't mention anything about diet at all and I was so relieved that it wasn't anything heart related that i forgot to mention low carbing

Now I'm wondering if I need to stop BC or at least limit the fat intake a bit

BIWI · 21/01/2015 21:50

Oh dear Sad I'm sorry to hear that. Are you in a lot of pain?

It is commonly said that if you have gallstones that you need to cut down on fat, which obviously means that this WOE isn't going to be good for you.

YoureMyWifeNowDave · 21/01/2015 22:27

I had a lot of pain on saturday (hence the visit to A&E) but have been fine since then and generally I have felt so much better since starting the last BC much less bloated and no IBS type pains after eating which used to happen quite a lot before i cut the carbs

I'm reluctant to go back to eating like I did before but I'm off on holiday next friday and really don't want to get the gallstone type pain while i'm away Sad
