Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

CockBollocks · 08/05/2014 18:26

Well, my new found love of coconut oil could prove expensive!!!

My first BPC was gorgeous and now i'm having chicken cooked in it (the oil not the bpc!)with korma spices.

Yum!

wombat22 · 08/05/2014 19:08

OK from reading everyone else's menus, I think I may be eating too much Confused

Coffee and cream on waking
B egg mayonnaise and a babybel
L chicken with salad leaves and cucumber with a bit of Avocado oil as dressing
T chicken and cauliflower curry

Will probably have another coffee with cream before bed. I have had a few cherry tomatoes in my salad Blush

My stomach is less bloated but no real probs with carb flu as I've been trying to restrict carbs on and off for the past few months.

Keep up the good work everyone. I'm enjoying seeing what everyone is eating. Sorry for the long post Grin

Oh and I have had a small bowl of ff yoghurt after lunch Blush

monkeyfacegrace · 08/05/2014 19:17

I keep getting told off Sad

Fwiw, I was drinking a considerable amount more Pepsi before I started the first boot camp in Jan. I absolutely cannot cut down any more. And I thought sugar free jelly occasionally was okay? Or have we got to get through the first 2 weeks first?

antimatter · 08/05/2014 19:19

monkeyfacegrace - ultimately if you loose weight whilst drinking Pepsi you shouldn't have to worry
but if you aren't then it may be one of reasons for it

why do you have to drink it?
is it for caffeine content and keeping you awake?

Locarblil · 08/05/2014 19:21

Far from an expert but looks good to me pingu.

Having parmagiana melanzane tonight. I've had it at Pizza Express in extremis when I can't face another salad, but it has breadcrumbs in and 33.8g/carbs per portion, so lots higher than I assumed. Still my homemade one is smelling lush. Will be served with chicken (yep I'm one of those mumsnetters who makes a chicken last 3 meals...)

BIWI - thanks for that cheese sauce recipe! So much simpler than the one I did last night. Will be trying it out v soon.

Locarblil · 08/05/2014 19:24

Meant to say - I'm feeling great today (sorry all you carb flu sufferers) Except for a weird greasy feeling. As if my skin's exuding all the fat I've been eating. Odd.

trashcanjunkie · 08/05/2014 19:24

pingu green beans are not strictly ok, and chicken breast is very low fat, you could swap for thigh with skin left on? Also butter for frying/cooking is recommended. What are you drinking? It's not dreadful, but could be more efficient with a couple of small changes.... Grin

pingufan · 08/05/2014 19:25

Thank you - Ive just spent hours In Aldi label checking - now to try & turn all the things I bought into meals! x

Locarblil · 08/05/2014 19:27

Oh no, I've been eating tons of green beans!

trashcanjunkie · 08/05/2014 19:30

monkey I hate to sound harsh, but of course you can cut down more! In actual fact you can stop altogether..... If you were stranded on a desert island, or the apocalypse happened, and pepsi supplies ran out, you would not die. No one, in the history of the world, ever, has died from lack of Pepsi Grin The fact is, you're suffering from an addiction to it. I sympathise with the addiction part - I didn't choose my nickname lightly! But no-one can do this for you. Telling yourself and us that you can't is just reinforcing that you won't. Ultimately it's up to you. But do you really honestly believe that giving up Pepsi will actually harm you?

pingufan · 08/05/2014 19:41

thanks trashcan, I'm drinking lots & lots of water and about 2 teas a day with the tiniest splash of semi skimmed milk. Ive got lots of chicken breasts here that I bought in bulk so don't want to waste them - I shall use butter from now on though to cook them. Once the chicken breasts have been used up I'll start buying whole chickens and eat the legs etc and let the kids & hubby have the breasts x

Can anyone tell me if you have to have meat / fish / eggs with every meal? Would cauli / leek with cheese sauce be ok on its own?

lowcarbforthewin · 08/05/2014 19:51

I've had just cauliflower cheese for a meal, no meat or fish. Still protein in the cheese.

Had a good day, lemon olive chicken for supper (Sarah Raven recipe, amazing!)

I was really really tired at tea so had a handful of almonds but I'm not going to best myself up about it.

wombat22 · 08/05/2014 19:53

Thank you minty

costababe · 08/05/2014 19:57

Good to read all the posts, for ideas for meals, thanks everyone.
Today B. Two boiled eggs mashed with butter and loads of black pepper, yum cup of tea splash of ss milk
Mid morning snack, 1oz cheese and 4 cherry toms
Very late lunch. FF Greek yoghurt cup of tea
Dinner. Chicken balti homemade no rice
Loads and loads of water!!

Doing ok, just need to think of snacks to pack for work, don't like celery and no fridge at work!
Any ideas gratefully received!!
Happy BC everyone!!

trashcanjunkie · 08/05/2014 19:59

pingu the idea is to eat a ratio of fat:protein:carbs - I can't remember the exact measurements. Cheese can be a staller for some people, so I guess you can try it and see. I for one have to be mega careful with cheese, and quite restrictive with veg. I weigh myself in order to 'tweak' what I'm doing. Well done!!

pingufan · 08/05/2014 20:07

It turns everything you know about losing weight on its head! I've been on another plan for 7 weeks (Terriann123) but that's low carb (around 50-60g/day) high protein (at least 250g meat at every meal) and low fat so I was allowed low fat yogurts / cheese etc - no oils or butter at all.
I was drinking a protein whey shake every day and was allowed 1l of diet drinks

Ive lost 1st 1lb on this but felt that I wanted to ditch the sweeteners - the weight loss was incredibly slow for a lot of effort and big expense buying so much low fat meat and the shakes at £25 a tub.

This way seems healthier - the good thing is that Ive got part way there with lowering the carbs anyway so hopefully will avoid the carb flu.

I just need to get my head around the fats and not be scared to add them x

Seri77 · 08/05/2014 20:10

Still haven't tried the BPC.

My suggestion for those who want toast and butter: just eat the butter. A slice of yeo valley salted straight from the fridge is delicious. I have 1-2 thin slices per day. I'm trying to cut down snacking on dairy so having that instead of cheese.

Constababe when I had no fridge at work I made egg & sausage muffins, froze them, then took them to work straight from the freezer. They were defrosted but not warm by lunchtime.

Still eating too much dairy but really enjoying some posh olives that were on offer.

B: 1 bacon rasher, 2 fried eggs, coffee with cream
L: small prawn salad w ff mayo, posh cheese & olives, small Greek yogurt, coffee with cream
D: chicken and leek soup with cream
S: cup of tea, slice of butter

My fourth day without chocolate. Last bootcamp I ate chocolate every day Shock.

feesh · 08/05/2014 20:27

Thanks for all the tips for dealing with my DH's cynicism. But we are fine really. He said his piece, I told him at least I wouldn't be overweight any more and anything had to be healthier than that, which shut him up as he is overweight too! But he's not the sort of person to keep going on about it, and he is LOVING me doing all the cooking and the very indulgent meals he is being treated to, so he's happy really. I think that my weight loss will speak for itself soon and I can see him getting on board in a few weeks. He's the sort of bloke who has to come round to things in his own time and you have to make him think it was all his idea in the first place Wink

I have major head fog right now (it's 10.30pm here and I really should be in bed, but I need to do a few things first).

I'm finding it hard to know when I'm actually hungry though, which sounds weird. It's a different kind of hunger to the dizzy, foggy feeling I used to get on carb lows. Sometimes I think it might actually be thirst, but it's hard to tell.

Best1sWest · 08/05/2014 20:31

Checking in for day 3.

B - Greek yoghurt with teaspoonful of coconut cream ( my new favourite thing)' eggs in a cup with butter.
L Prawns with little gem, spinach, celery and mayo.
D - bacon, egg, mushrooms cooked in butter.

3 cups black tea, 1 black coffee, 2.5 litres of water.

Feeling ok so far, determined to do this.
