Week 4 Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on

BIWI · 03/02/2014 08:28

Morning.

I see that some of us are struggling.

I see that there is a lot of cheating.

Hmm. I wonder if there is a connection Grin

Seriously folks, this is not a terribly forgiving WOE. The idea of Bootcamp Light was to give you a bit more flexibility, but not to send you spiralling into a chocolate and alcohol-fuelled frenzy!

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness or on your own personal Weight Tracker

Remember that weight loss may stop in weeks 3 and 4 - sometimes 5. It takes this long for your body to become keto adapted, i.e. to switch fully from carb-burning to fat-burning.

And if you're continually pushing up your daily carb intake, all you are doing is delaying this process

Hope you all have a good week.

I've done photos since I started last year. Newest one (not exact comparison but you get the idea)

Morning!

Cracking photos Good - look at your hips! All slinky.

Happy, I bet we're all right, because lots of us have noticed that TOTM fluctuation. Because I didn't own any scales before starting this WOE I had no idea just how much weight fluctuated during the week, during the day, overnight. Hugely. I can, apparently, weigh nearly half a stone differently in the course of 24 hours, without seeing any difference in how my clothes fit Confused. Which is why BIWI's earnest pleas for us only to weigh once a week make sense to me now.

Cheese News: after all that talk last night I persuaded myself to try some. A sliver about half the length of my little finger. Nothing, really. This morning? Blotchy bloody skin! How could I not have noticed this all my life? I've never not eaten cheese before

SteeleyeStan · 08/02/2014 10:58

Morning everyone, and thank you Sayra, LittleMiss and BIWI :)

Well done for realising your own “cheat limits” Athel :) – I think that’s the key to a lot of this actually. And it's better to find later than never if dairy doesn't suit you!

Lovecat Oooh skiving off to go to the cinema alone! I used to do that a lot in my younger days, and often to quite bizarre movies too, and you’ve made me all nostalgic.

Seri I definitely have days when I’m just more hungry, without it seeming like a blood sugar crash. I think your appetite just varies a lot from day to day depending on how much you’re doing, hormones, what you ate the day before etc. I’m at least assuming that’s how it is for most people?

Tea Yay for fitting in that dress! Grin

Crabby and Ewan I also wish I was less squeamish about the less eaten bits, as the idea of utilising the whole animal really appeals to me. So far all I’ve managed is to move onto cheaper cuts and the occasional liver. I don’t actually even like the liver, but DH loves it, and I want to feel like I’m trying… And bone broth. I’ve done that occasionally, but I think it’s tasted a bit weird – so I’ve just used it in stocks and sauces instead of actually drinking it.

LittleMiss your farmers’ market sounds great! Envy Our closest one’s not very close at all and not very good either. Must investigate what there is once/if we move actually!

Woolfey I’ll join you in celeriac hatred. Grin I’ve given it loads of chances, thinking I must’ve just cooked it wrong as other people love it, but no, it’s vile; I’ll stick to swede and turnips.

Lookslike Sounds like it’s going really well. :) My MIL is a vegetarian who doesn’t cook veggies, ie. she lives on tea and toast. Hmm Luckily she’d never give me nutritional advice – we’ve come to a lovely balance of mutual politeness in our relationship. Grin

good You can definitely see a difference esp with the love handles area – well done! :)

I have a kind of a Before and After pic HERE though I feel a bit ambivalent about that for some reason, like it's someone else - not me... Hmm The “after” picture is from last summer, so I’ve lost a bit since then, too. :) (And I actually own non-baggy non-black clothes these days, too!)

I’m a bit envious about all this talk about Waitrose goodies. (NW here too.) I think once/if we move there’ll be one c. 10 miles from us, but without a car that will still be a bit of a hassle… We’ll have M&S Food very close by though… Do they do anything nice?

Anyway, yesterday went well enough, though I did skip lunch and eat 70% chocolate instead.
Today’s plan is:
B: Fried eggs and coffee with coconut oil.
L: Avocado, smoked salmon, cheese and/or olives.
D: Black Farmer sausages, swede mash and homemade coleslaw

The whoosh fairy's been! The whoosh fairy's been!

3lbs lighter today Grin.

Happy had TOTM last week and was 1lb up with it, 2lbs down by the time it finished (1lb net loss), and 3lbs down today, so don't despair and keep at it, especially your water and fat.

Off for a walk with DS while the sun is still shining, back later.

BIWI · 08/02/2014 11:26

Thumbwitch - I read that about scales weighing heavier on carpet as well! I'm not convinced though. Although obviously I'd love to claim that 3lb loss.

Happy

I was doing really well, lost about 7lbs, not cheated at all. Today i have regained 4lbs!!! I am due on my period today/tomorrow but that seems a lot just for time of the month?

It's very common for your weight to go up before your period. Not sure why but often it's to do with water retention - drink even more water and this should help.

The only different thing i have had this week to previous is pork scratchings but they are low carb so though that was ok. Is it definitely the case that calories don't matter? In all circumstances? I absolutely have not cheated at all but know the scratchings are high calorie so thats all i can think of?

Nothing wrong with pork scratchings. The only possible issue is the amount of salt that they contain could be creating water retention - so the same issue as being pre-menstrual. Drink more water.

And we do not worry about calories on a low carb diet! Certainly not at the beginning anyway. As you get nearer to your target weight it's something you may have to consider, but at this stage, really don't worry about it.

Or should it all go again after my period? Feel very down today now

Don't be sad. This is all perfectly normal and you will see, as you get used to this way of eating, and start to see a longer term trend, that each month you may see this slight increase - but it's only temporary.

Honestly! Grin

Hi all. My God you lot talk a lot! Grin

Crabby - I too think the kinesiology is woo. Very woo! Although a new friend popped in for coffee yesterday and I mentioned it to her - quite disparagingly - turns out she is trained in it! Blush. She reckons it works. I'm not doing anything too weird though. Am taking the probiotic and Vit B Complex the therapist recommended. Am low carbing. Am drinking more water. Not sure about the so called Mayo Clinic Diet. Am tempted to print off the truth about it and show it to her!

I have manage to stick to Bootcamp yesterday and today for the first time in a while. I'm going to go light on dairy though.

Having a curry tonight which DH will make. Will have with cauliflower rice.

Pork belly tomorrow. Would love to do something different with it but DS only likes it plain.

BIWI · 08/02/2014 13:49

Hi Buda! Glad you're still with us Grin

CiderwithBuda · 08/02/2014 14:29

Hi BIWI! Thanks. It's been a struggle. All in my head. I'm hoping the counselling/hypnotherapy I'm having will help. I have some amazing incentives to lose weight for this year but that never seems enough so I need to sort that out.

CrabbyWinterBottom · 08/02/2014 15:08

Just shouting my shit as this blog post has taken all day and DP is patiently waiting to walk the dog get soaked in the rain.

This is the fish stew recipe and I tried a new thing - a chart giving a visual representation of timing for the various stages of the recipe, so what you should be doing when, sort of thing.
feastwithoutregret.wordpress.com/2014/02/08/fish-stew-with-alioli/

I'd be really grateful if you could give me feedback about whether that's helpful and whether it would make cooking it easier for you. Also, I've put some time saving tips at the bottom for those of you who wanted quick recipes.

Smile
EwanHoozami · 08/02/2014 15:44

Crabby I'm well up for trying that fish stew. I like the time management graph too (although I'd need to add extra bars for Chasing DS2 Out Of Kitchen and also Timewasting On MN Wink ) Do you reckon it'd work with smoked fish or could that clash with the smoked paprika?

Tricky day today as I've knackered my hip and am hobbling around bored at home looking for food to pick at

B - Lidl yog
S - gouda slices, pork scratchings, salami
L - none as I'd grazed too much Blush
D - sausage traybake with whatever veg left in the fridge that looks vaguely roastable

LittleMissDisorganized · 08/02/2014 15:45

Sayra very well done - I think I am on to make 11lb tomorrow - that's what it was mid week, will be disappointed if it doesn't hold! Photos monthly are a great idea, wearing similar stuff, I think I'll try that... and
goodasitgets you look brilliant, I hope you are so proud of yourself!

I feel ill, low, and tempted. We have hot cross buns - I'm quite surprised by my temptation with those - and the sweet potato fries in the freezer too. But I am full, not hungry at all, making myself plod through the water. Resisted compulsive spending yesterday which is the same head stuff really - it's making myself feel better through 'stuff' and doesn't ultimately help. But there are lots and lots of feelings Confused and not using my default coping is hard. Really hard.

I'm going to make a combined swede and celeriac dolphin pose in a bit, I'm not a great fan of celeriac but mixed together you get just the right amount of absorption and falling-apart-ness. Not in the mood really but probably just being a miserable so-and-so.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 08/02/2014 17:11

Look at you, artfully scattering prawns, Crabby Grin Grin grin]

That looks marvellous, and some day when I'm 80 I shall get around to doing it . I'm ashamed to admit I'm more of a bung-it-in-a-tray-in-the-oven-then-cover-it-in-cream-or-mayonnaise-to-cover-up-it's-deficiencies sort of a cook during the week Blush

AthelstaneTheUnready · 08/02/2014 17:14

pah. half a grin.

Ewan, not to tar you with my rubbish cook brush, but I too am having bits and pieces sausage traybake tonight...

Sorry about all the feelings, LittleMiss - they're a bugger to get through. Starting to prepare the mixed dolphin pose may distract you a little, but moods appear to come and go according to their own whims, unfortunately.

Lighthousekeeping · 08/02/2014 17:15

My neighbour has just knocked on the door with some butter chicken. She assures me it's just chicken, nutter, cream, tomato paste and Indian spices. Smells divine. I've put garlic celearic chips in the oven to go with it. Last bloody night. I have a horrible pain in my lower right side. I had it all night as well. No idea what it us. Does anyone know if low carbing has an effect on fibroids? I'd love it if it helped shrink them. They are more noticeable as my bloated stomach goes down.

I have steak in the fridge for my finishing nights treat. I have loads of mushrooms and a tubby of philidelphia so I'm going to google how to make a sauce for it. I long for chilli with loads of kidney beans. I can't lie.

PseudoBadger · 08/02/2014 17:30

chicken, nutter, cream, tomato

:o

BIWI · 08/02/2014 17:47

I went shopping today, and tried various things on in M&S - one of those changing rooms with mirrors on all walls so you can't escape seeing yourself.

I have had to realise that I really need to get my act together and shed some bloody weight. I know I have already, but it was just all too obvious that I'm not talking about losing another couple of pounds Sad

I think I've been deluding myself that because I'm wearing size 10, sometimes size 8 clothes, that I haven't got far to go.

Someone needs a big stick to hit me with.

OP posts:
CrabbyWinterBottom · 08/02/2014 17:49

Lighthouse if you've got double cream and a slosh of sherry/brandy, you could make this. I'll put the recipe up on the blog now if you like. It's dead easy and very yummy.

Week 4 Low Carb Bootcamp - Keep on keeping on
Lighthousekeeping · 08/02/2014 17:53

Lordy, if I buy a bottle of sherry/brandy I don't know where it might end with me on the floor

That butter chicken was out of the world. My mouth is on fire. I love that feeling.

daisychicken · 08/02/2014 17:54

Well Done Snowie!!!!

Have just done Crabby's roast pork belly with fennel spices.... 'twas lush! DH and I gobbled our tea down and even better.... we still have 1/2 the meat left which I'm going to be hiding and eating all to myself Grin Thanks Crabby!!!!

daisychicken · 08/02/2014 17:56

DC wields BIWI's stick for her!! Are you really really needing to loose that amount of weight or is it your view of yourself? I'm hovering between a size 8 and a size 10 and I'd really like to be a total size 8 but I am aware that to other people I look fine and that my perception of my body is not the same as theirs...

Notsoskinnyminny · 08/02/2014 18:01

Lighthouse my staple is sliced mushrooms fried in loads of butter then stir in the whole tub, add a handful of grated cheese and when its all melted serve. Its even nicer with a handful of lardons fried with the mushrooms.

Crabby that looks delicious but DH has banned me from making any more of your recipes as they involve every pan and electric gadget we possess - he came in when I was in the middle of preping tonight's kashmiri chicken and was not impressed with the bombsite. But he admitted he liked your cauli cheese last night.

BIWI M&S sizes have gone to pot, don't beat yourself up.

Suzymoo9 · 08/02/2014 18:15

Just catching up with the threads.

Steeley and good - fantastic photos - really gives me inspiration.

Went for a VERY blustery beach walk today here in South Devon - the dog found BIWI's stick - we quickly put it back, hope she doesn't notice.

On that note BIWI it is so good you fit into a size 10, sometimes 8 even - I am only short so should be that size too (once was) - hoping for it soon.

Lots of temptation at home today but I have been good and honestly haven't cheated - it was a misunderstanding about the bits of fruit.

Today:
B sausages, cooked tomato, scrambled egg
L Salad with olive oil/wine vinegar, pate, cheese
D Reheated beef casserole, Suede mash with butter

Trying to cut out cream and cut down cheese - hope this helps.

MrsHughJarse · 08/02/2014 18:20

biwi changing room mirrors are EVIL Angry .... The work of the devil in fact .
My personal favourite is the bathroom mirror as i can only see myself from waist up and not see huge arse !

I don't think my bare skeleton without any flesh at all would fit into a size 8 - but I am very tall , so I guess it's all relative ...
