Bootcamp - the questions thread

From experience of past Bootcamps, in the first few weeks the chat threads move really, really quickly and it's difficult sometimes to see/answer everything.

So this is a place to post any questions that you might have. Those of us who are old hands at low carbing will check this thread regularly and make sure that we answer you as soon as we can.

oh and another question (sorry) i have scanned lots of the previous threads but cannot find the answer...

Which coconut oil do i need to get? Went to holland and barrett yesterday and they had a jar of solidified coconut oil for 9.99 but when i looked at the back the carbs were really very high - can someone please let me know which brand / shop they get theirs from please....

thanks

It's gogglebox and 2 bottles a glass of wine here! Oh well water it is Sad must get it into my head that eating pizza and drinking wine has got me to 14st 7ish! And at 5ft 2ins, that's pretty big!

I have casserole in the slow cooker but doesn't seem to be thickening and obviously can't use flour. I'm planning cauliflower cheese with it, I have no idea if I even like cauliflower but everything tastes better with cheese!

Sending you a virtual, carb and sugar free Wine doineedhelp

doineedhelp · 06/06/2014 20:01

Thanks therewearethen good luck with your friday night sans wine.... hope the casserole turns out well, I adore cauliflower, I hope you enjoy

SayraT · 06/06/2014 22:30

doineedhelp I think that your meals look fine, but maybe post on the main thread as its much busier so you'll get answers quicker.

doineedhelp · 07/06/2014 16:05

I am also wondering about calories? I am feeling very pissed off this morning. I have been sugar/carb free for almost 5 weeks now and for the past couple of weeks, been watching more carefully the amounts I eat.

I feel much healthier and I feel lighter. I never weighed at the start of this but I weighed this morning and I am the heaviest I have been in years! I am averaging I reckon between 1500-2000 cals per day.

Over the past couple of weeks, have cut back on the amount of cheese I was having and the nuts.

What am I doing wrong? I know that this way of eating makes me feel a million times better, full up and has stopped my massive bingeing problem but I want to get back to around 10 st (nearer 11 at the moment).

Am 42 by the way-if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

BIWI · 14/06/2014 08:07

pudding - how much do you weigh/how much are you trying to lose?

List out for me what you've been eating and drinking over the last few days and let's see if we can help

OP posts:
pudding25 · 14/06/2014 08:52

About 5 weeks ago, I decided to finally go sugar free after my bingeing getting out of control again and putting on weight. I went sugar free and low carb but didn't limit portions/nuts/ cheese etc and didn't weigh.

About 2 weeks ago, I started to cut back on the amounts.

I feel a million times better and definitely slimmer. I weighed this morning and am far heavier than I have been in years. I don't get it. Maybe I am eating too many calories?

Any advice on calories? Thanks

pudding25 · 14/06/2014 10:25

Thanks biwi. Not sure what happened as looked like my first post didn't work.
I weigh, as of today, 10 st 12. I was about 10 st 3 until about 6 monthe ago when my bingeing got away with me.

A typical day would be something like this-
B- protein shake made with 300 ml almond or soya milk, tablespoon of sugar free peanut butter and tablespoon protein powder

L- spinach cucumber and pepper salad wwith salmon, egg a bit of feta and mayo

Snack- half an avocado with mayo or chicken Alice's with mayo or a few nuts

D- tofu broccoli mushrooms cooked wwith butter or olive oil or veggie sausages with the same veggies dinner is usually veggie
Then I might have a tablespoon of full gat Greek yoghurt mixed with some tahini.

I also drink tons of eater plus one coffee with soya milk and about two decaf teas with soya milk.

There have been some days where I have eaten more cheese and more peanut butter.

BIWI · 14/06/2014 14:03

How tall are you? Do you have much to lose (realistically)? Weight loss can slow down as you get near to your target.

Your day looks pretty good overall to me, although (personally) I'd be avoiding the protein shake in favour of real food at breakfast time. Eggs would be a good substitution.

Are you eating enough fat? If your protein sources are salmon and tofu/veggie sausages, they are relatively lean - so you might need to up your fat.

And the water - you say 'tons' but how much is that? You should be drinking a minimum of two litres a day.

On Bootcamp it's usually eating too little fat and drinking too little water that can cause issues. Oh, and also eating too little.

JanuaryKat · 14/06/2014 14:21

Hello,
This is my first day of low carb Smile
What are the allowed sources of fat? I don't eat butter.
I have just made some mayo (yummy!), could that be a substitute?
I also don't like pork or lamb, but love fish.
Thanks for any help!

pudding25 · 14/06/2014 14:38

Ha ha- me eating too little- never happened in my life! I drink more than 2 litres a day so it's not that. I am 5 ft 6 so not over weight, just feeling chunky now and I look and feel much better around 10 stone.

I think I overdo it some days on cheese and peanut butter.

I with lunch I have mayo, I cook veg at dinner with butter or olive oil or coconut oil. U eat peanut butter and Tahini so that's my fats.

Been feeling so pissed off today and eaten a ton of cheese...

lowcarbforthewin · 14/06/2014 20:30

Fat - there aren't allowed sources per se.
Mayonnaise, coconut oil, butter, ghee, olive oil, avocados, tahini in small amounts are all good. Coconut cream is good too.

BIWI · 15/06/2014 14:12

JanuaryKat Any fat (apart from horrid trans/hydrogenated fats) are essential on a low carb diet. Why don't you eat butter?

pudding two things: first, you're close to your ideal weight, so weight loss will be slow. It does probably mean that you will have to keep an eye on your portion size/calories. Second, try to separate what the scales say from what your body looks like. How well are your clothes fitting?

It's also possible that your body has a different idea of the weight it wants to be from the weight you want it to be!

OP posts:
JanuaryKat · 15/06/2014 15:49

Thanks lowcarb & BIWI, that is very helpful.

I don't eat butter because the taste & smell makes me feel ill, been like that for as long as I can remember. Cheese used to make my mouth itch, but all seems ok now.

pudding25 · 15/06/2014 20:29

Thanks biwi. I was around the 10 st, at most 10 4 mark for ages so that's why I know I should be around that weight and it's when my clothes fit properly.

I do feel less bloated than I did a few weeks ago and clothes are starting to fit a bit better.

I definitely think it is now keeping an eye on the calories unfortunately! Also, going to cut right back on the cheese and not let extra cups of tea sneak in as that adds on the calories.

Will see how that goes.

antimatter · 16/06/2014 08:25

JanuaryKat - start using animal fats for frying, to replace oil as you will e getting enough of oil eating mayo

januarycat · 16/06/2014 18:19

Thanks, antimatter. I just had a flash back to the 1970s & there was always a pot of 'dripping' in the fridge,it was topped up with the fat from the sunday roast. Is that what you mean? Blush

antimatter · 17/06/2014 05:57

yes januaryKat - we are consuming a lot of omega 3 and 6 from vegetable oil sources (on this WOE in form of mayo) and animal fat is very good for you

BIWI · 17/06/2014 07:33

Lard is also another good fat to use, along with butter, of course! You can also buy jars of goose/duck fat. And try coconut oil too.

Can I ask about coconut cream? I am struggling to find anything in the shops in the US here (have not tried my favorite Korean supermarket yet, but that is a longer drive), as everything I find seems to be called coconut milk. Generally the carbs are ok, and it certainly adds nice taste to things. What is the difference to coconut cream? Are they the same thing under different names?

By the way, I figure that creamed coconut is not the right thing - as that has way too much sugar, carbs, etc...
