Bootcamp - the questions thread

From experience of past Bootcamps, in the first few weeks the chat threads move really, really quickly and it's difficult sometimes to see/answer everything.

So this is a place to post any questions that you might have. Those of us who are old hands at low carbing will check this thread regularly and make sure that we answer you as soon as we can.

I'm bit sure whether it's allowed, but I personally don't bother with all the low carb bread/ cake alternatives- you soon find alternatives. It was my birthday a couple of weeks ago, ( I've been low carbing for a couple of months) and I thought I would have some lie carb bread with my boiled egg. It was disappointing. I much prefer straight egg in a cup now! Just concentrate on clean eating :)

JaneParker · 14/05/2014 13:31

My view too. If something is a bar, a protein shake, a paleo bread or whatever it is basically a processed junk food product which is not natural and not good for you. Stick to real food.

BIWI · 14/05/2014 13:41

According to this site blackcurrants are 6.6g per 100g, which makes them a bit carby for Bootcamp.

I would also say to avoid flax meal during Bootcamp. Even on Bootcamp Light, as lots of people report that it can impede weight loss.

nappyaddict · 14/05/2014 14:25

How come almonds are allowed on Bootcamp light at 6.9g per 100g then?

JaneParker · 14/05/2014 16:00

I have no nuts as I cannot eat them in small numbers.

I do think they have a much less of an effect than any of the fruits at all actually though. Avoid fruit.

BIWI · 14/05/2014 17:22

nappy - we're not doing Bootcamp Light, we're doing Bootcamp!

OP posts:
BIWI · 14/05/2014 17:23

Sorry - I missed that your original question was about Bootcamp Light Blush

In which case, yes they are allowed but, as with the advice about nuts, only occasionally/in moderation

I'm home alone this weekend and I usually make the most of it with a film I like and an Indian takeaway so I'm hoping I can still do this but obviously without the naan which I think I'll miss but never mind. So how about if I have chicken tikka masala and saag paneer? Would they be ok? I'm undecided between saag paneer and paneer korma but I just think I'll be disappointed in the spice in the korma.

BIWI · 14/05/2014 20:16

I'd avoid korma, as it's often sweetened. Similarly tikka massala.

Your best bet is to go for a dry curry - (chicken) tikka or tandoori is by far the best option. Or a shashlik - chicken tikka kebab with onion/pepper/tomato.

OP posts:
NeverHadANickname · 14/05/2014 20:26

Lovely thanks, I did wonder about the sweetness. I'll probably go for chicken tikka and I can always add a drizzle of cream if I want to sauce it up a bit Grin

Hello! Im starting out this week - can anyone please help me with this question about hangovers when low carbing

HolgerDanske · 15/05/2014 17:33

Yes I've found that my tolerance to alcohol has gone down. I can have maybe a glass or two and be ok, any more than that and I feel a bit rough the next day. But I don't mind that. I think of it in terms of having completely reset my body to expect a better level of health overall.

antimatter · 15/05/2014 21:35

I think our livers are working very hard if we low carbing and can't cope with filtering alcohol out of our blood system.
I think if you had lots of water between sips of wine it would have been easier.

nappyaddict · 20/05/2014 14:17

BIWI have got all confused now. do you mean the blackcurrants or almonds (or both) are allowed in moderation on bootcamp light?

also do you know carb contents for marrow, turnips, kale and cavolo nero?

also where in the supermarket do I find celeriac? I couldn't find it by potatoes, parsnips etc.

BIWI · 20/05/2014 21:29

nappy - you really need to get yourself a book of carb counts!

On Bootcamp Light you can have fruit like blackcurrants and almonds, but only occasionally and only in moderation.

Celeriac will be alongside other root vegetables. In Sainsbury's it's usually next to the swede and parsnips.

Marrow - boiled, 1.6g per 100g, raw 2.2g per 100g
Turnip - 2g per 100g
Cavolo nero 4.2g per 100g
Kale 8g per 100g

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 21/05/2014 14:11

What book do you have BIWI

Am surprised about the kale!

BIWI · 21/05/2014 14:14

Yes, I was surprised too.

I have the Collins one, and another one the name of which I forget. I also Google for carb counts, and use the carb counter on this site

Uplateagain · 21/05/2014 14:57

Could someone clarify this for me please?
I'm working on the basis that as we're lcing, we don't have to worry about calories; ie calories in butter, ff yoghurt etc etc. But then every now and then when people are complaining about stalling or very slow weight loss - they are advised to 'watch their portion sizes' and not eat too much...
Is there a calorific limit as to what is 'too much'??

Parsnipcake · 21/05/2014 15:27

On ocado, kale is 1.4g carb per 100g. This seems more likely?

BIWI · 21/05/2014 17:01

It's definitely much lower than that, nappy, but conflicting carb counts. I'd take it as under 4g carbs per 100g

SayraT · 25/05/2014 16:56

uplateagain I think that when you are starting out (and maybe have a lot to lose) then calorie counting doesn't matter. I think that you can eat more calories on this WOE than on others. I tracked a day of eating the other week and it was over 2000 calories. It was a normal LC day, previously when calorie counting I've been eating 1200/day and not losing weight whereas I do lose weight on the WOE.

If you are nearer to goal then your body actually needs less calories anyway as there is less of you Grin so nearer goal it is sensible to look a calories a little bit.

Or, maybe, if you are just eating large portions out of habit then maybe you don't need to be and should try to cut down. For example if you are eating 2500-3000 calories per day then that is probably too many but 2000-2300 would be ok?

I am no expert but this is just what I think. Stuntnun has posted something about this on the main thread I think.

Uplateagain · 30/05/2014 21:22

SayraT thankyou - I suppose when you're not losing you feel like analysing everything.... Just struggling with denying myself carbs (I really love carbs so although I don't feel hungry on this WOE I do feel like I'm giving up a lot) and not losing weight.... have actually put on this week :( Am having good think about whether this suits me. Really appreciate your getting back to me Thanks

SayraT · 01/06/2014 13:07

uplateagain if you are struggling then maybe you could post (on the main thread) what your daily meals/snacks etc have been and see if there is anything anyone can suggest?

A few people just recently have realised that they were not eating enough fat and on increasing that have had a sudden whoosh. Try not to get discouraged, some people like Trashcanjunkie really struggled at the start on the previous BC and put on weight. Then they had a whoosh and were off.

I think stuntnun said that if you've done a lot of dieting previously then your body can take some time to reset itself.

As with all WOE it won't suit everyone but why not try and stick it out for the 10 weeks and if you truly hate it you at least know you have given it a good shot, try not to feel too discouraged Flowers

BIWI · 01/06/2014 13:31

Uplateagain - how much weight do you have to lose? Give me an idea of what you've been eating over the last few days (and drinking) and let's see if we can help.

And are you following Bootcamp? If you are, are you sure that you are really following the rules to the letter?

nappyaddict · 02/06/2014 14:20

Asda has curly kale as 1.0 per 100g boiled.
