Bootcamp - the questions thread

BIWI · 13/01/2014 07:24

From experience of past Bootcamps, in the first few weeks the chat threads move really, really quickly and it's difficult sometimes to see/answer everything.

So this is a place to post any questions that you might have. Those of us who are old hands at low carbing will check this thread regularly and make sure that we answer you as soon as we can.

Would you guys eat those chicken fridge raiders? I think 4g carb per 100g and the pack is 80g? I know it's processed rubbish and tbh I don't know what they taste like but nice to add something to the list of 'very occasional snacks'.

BIWI · 03/06/2014 14:08

I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole, lowcarb!

But if you like them, and they're only occasional ...

olivesnutsandcheese · 03/06/2014 14:26

lowcarb, what about a packet of cooked chicken breast pieces instead? Same aisle as fridgeraiders but a lot less processed crap.
I buy them as toddler DS will only eat them for lunch with some cheese and cucumber (obviously likes low-carbing!) I sometimes eat on their own or preferably add to some mayo and pesto for a higher fat solution.

lowcarbforthewin · 03/06/2014 20:32

No, you're quite right, they're shit. I won't buy any.

doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 08:22

morning

I started LC yesterday and i think i have my head around it all but i would really like someone in the know to look at my food for today and tell me if this is okay? (please)

Breakfast - 3 eggs scrambled with butter and some smoked salmon (my one cup of tea of the day with a splash of milk!)
Lunch - salad, olives, feta and tin of tuna
Dinner - cod steaks and veg (cauliflower and asparagus with butter)
Snacks (if needed) boiled eggs and mayonnaise / celery filled with full fat philly

I am slightly confused about a couple of things - yogurt - does this have to be full fat natural / greek yogurt? Also, is there an amount of carbs i shouldn't be going over on a daily basis?

Thanks for your help Smile

doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 08:31

Also - another question - can i eat Avocado?

lowcarbforthewin · 04/06/2014 09:17

Welcome doi, you're doing great. Bear in mind some smoked salmon can be a bit Carby, it has sugar in it. Depends on how strict you want to be.
Yogurt should be full fat and check the label (needs to be under 3G per 100g ideally).
Yes, you can eat avocado.
I think most of us are trying to stay under 10% carbs, which is around 25g. Have me look here for more info. Mark's Daily Apple is great in general for Info.

doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 09:32

Thank you lowcarb, i will check the label but i think it said 0.3g per 100g.

This is going to take some time to get my head around not eating fat, which i have indoctrinated myself with over the many years of dieting

doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 09:33

i mean eating fat...

doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 12:13

Just one more question for now (hopefully!)
When it comes to sauteing veg in a pan i should only use butter or coconut oil, but olive oil is fine for roasting and for salad dressings?

therewearethen · 04/06/2014 12:41

Should tuna be in brine or oil?

BIWI · 04/06/2014 13:29

tuna always in oil!

Olive oil not so good for cooking, so use butter, ghee, lard or coconut oil

OP posts:
doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 14:49

another question (sorry!) when it comes to cheese, how much should can i have? Example, if i had a tiny bit of feta on my salad at lunch, could i have some at dinner. Also are there better cheeses - goat, sheep, soft, hard etc?

Thanks (again)

therewearethen · 04/06/2014 16:49

And me! What sort of % over the day should be carbs? I've just done my best to track what I've had on my fitness pal, was thinking corn on the cob with tea which I've yet to buy so haven't added yet but I'm around 73% fat, 22% protein and 5% carbs. About right or way off? I'm thinking the protein looks a bit low

BIWI · 04/06/2014 19:30

Cheese is something that you can eat relatively freely as long as:

  • you're not eating half a pound with every meal!
  • you don't have a problem with dairy - a surprising number of people do

The only way to see if it's a problem for you is to try it.

therewearethen - corn on the cob is probably one of the worst things you can eat! Have you looked at the list of allowed veg on the spreadsheet?

And Bootcamp was devised so that you don't have to sorry about counting calories or carbs or anything else - don't stress about the numbers!

OP posts:
doineedhelp · 04/06/2014 20:36

Thanks biwi... I could quite easily eat half a pound of cheese but I will resist

therewearethen · 04/06/2014 21:10

Oops! I did, I read baby sweetcorn so just assumed.... It was nice tho and I had butter on it Grin won't happen again

BIWI · 04/06/2014 21:33
Grin

I have the following options for my salad box today at work - which is best for LC bootcamp -

green salad with peppers, tomatoes and cucumber, topped with ff cottage cheese, coleslaw (with ff mayo) and olives
or the same but with tuna mayonnaise and sweetcorn instead of the cottage cheese?

Thanks

BIWI · 05/06/2014 22:40

Too late now, but no sweetcorn! It's massively carby.

Go the Bootcamp spreadsheet and look at the list of allowed veg.

Also, be careful about coleslaw - they vary widely in their carb counts, and can be very, very carby.

therewearethen · 06/06/2014 10:18

Are green beans out aswell? Just checking as I cocked up with the corn on day 1 think I did much better yest

B ff yog with bit of cream, coffee with cream
L courgette fried in butter with chilli, salad, bit of feta, drizzle of olive oil
D spag Bol (no pasta) made with shallots and sainsburys basic chopped toms, with salad and I had some fresh tomatoes fried in butter but reading through I'm not sure they are aloud? Can you confirm please?

Oh and at lunch I had a squeeze of fresh lemon on my salad, then had a panic that lemon is fruit!? Is that avoid to?

Not looking forward to no wine tonight but I'm determined to be strict for at least 2wks!

Thanks BIWI!

therewearethen · 06/06/2014 10:23

Forgot something! Was planning on casserole for dinner usually make it with beef, onions, carrots and a colmans packet mix lazy so I was thinking beef, shallots, 1 carrot (making it for 2 so only be half) and some random herbs I find in the cupboard and maybe garlic. Is oxo ok?

doineedhelp · 06/06/2014 10:57

thanks BIWI but yes too late now, i opted for the tuna sweetcorn, oops!! at least i know for next time. Can someone assess my day's food please, i worry i could eat too much.

B - scrambled eggs with butter and small bit of smoked salmon, 1 tea with a splash of milk
L - leftover frittata (made with courgette and mushrooms and spinach fried in butter, salmon, eggs, splash of cream and some ff soft cheese (tbsp) and parmesan) with a green salad and dressing
D - Tuna steaks and vegetables stir fried with chilli, ginger and some stock

Is this too much, just right or what??

Thanks Flowers

doineedhelp · 06/06/2014 11:00

therewearethen i looked on the veg sheet and could only find french beans (which i think are the same) they were down as 4.7 per 100g

doineedhelp · 06/06/2014 11:01

yes i normally spend friday night watching 'The Good Wife' with a bottle of wine - will be an interesting one but likewise I am determined! Good luck therewearethen
