Week 1 - New Year 2014 Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

BIWI · 13/01/2014 07:22

Morning all!

I see several of you have already weighed in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

As of today, though, we also have our bright, shiny, new Bootcamp section on Mumsnet, including our own Weight Tracker, which will only show your own weight/progress.

You can either use the Spreadsheet as we have done before, which everyone has access to and can see, or you can go here and enter your weight.

Obviously you can do both!

When you're in the new Bootcamp, if you click on the tab that says 'more info' that will take you to a section which has loads of information about low carbing, as well as Bootcamp Rules

Before we get going formally, I have to make an important disclaimer:

I am not a doctor, a medic, a scientist, a nutritionist or a dietician. I have no formal training in food, dieting or low carbing. The information that I provide here is based solely on my reading on the subject, as well as my own experience. If you have any kind of medical condition and/or you are taking any kind of ongoing medication, you should consult your GP before starting a low carb diet

That done, good luck everyone!

Evening everyone! Shiney new section is great and I have duly put my weight in here as well as in the SOF. Oh and well done on new job BIWI - how exciting.

Feeling virtuous about having BC'd last week (baring 3 measly teaspoons of no peanut butter) as I know that I shouldn't get carb flu or major cravings this week. But I'm inevitably going to gain as a result of a party this weekend, so need to be on fire before then.

Today:
B: 2 eggs, butter
L: chicken leftover from yesterday's roast, some spinach soup (not very nice actually), goats cheese, lettuce and a couple of carrot batons.
D: A sort of pot luck leftovers thing from the weekend involving a bit of chicken plus some salmon, cauli cheese and mixed (lc) roast veg all fried off and mixed with a bit more cream. Served with kale. Was suprisingly yummy.

Plenty of water, 3 or 4 black coffees and a camomile tea. Totally kicked the snacking which is ace. Wish my 'co-workers' would stop putting cakes out every day.

BIWI · 13/01/2014 22:00

Evening all!

Hope - I'm 54 now, and I started low carbing (seriously) when I was 52 - so you can do it!

And you will have to trust us that eating fat will not make you fat. Don't worry about your portion sizes, but focus on making sure that you are eating enough food so that you are satisfied. Don't eat until you're stuffed, and don't think that you need to restrict portions so that you're hungry. This way of eating is not about deprivation - unlike low calorie or low fat diets!

Once you're into ketosis properly your appetite will decrease naturally, anyway.

Hi Sal - lovely to see you back!

Hi everyone,
Haven't put my weight on as my scales are broken (not by me I can add - by my DD pushing them through the bannister slats and down the stairs!) I'm guessing I have a stone to lose really to be my optimum weight but for a comfortable weight about half a stone.
I love this diet as you see results so quickly - but I am a sugar addict so breaking that habit is pretty tough!
Looking forward to logging in the thread, already have fab ideas for food. The ginger pork parcels of BIWI's are a particular favourite. Thanks BIWI and Willy for the thread - and congrats on the job BIWI - have you converted many people in the actual office??? Xxxx

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 13/01/2014 22:33

Evening all, and boy am I glad to be back! Really need this!

I lost 20lbs on my first BC back in Oct-Dec 2012 and pretty well maintained that for most of 2013 but had a mad December/Xmas so have about 6 lbs to lose to get back to maintenance weight and then another 6 or so to get to my "ideal" ( in my head) weight.

Let's do this!!

BIWI · 13/01/2014 22:33

By the way, don't know if you've noticed, but we have the facility to post pictures on this thread!

Morning!
Just started the day with a hunk of leftover salmon, cooked with butter, oil (ok a touch of lemon juice), parmesan and coriander topping. Is that ok for breakfast?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/01/2014 22:36

Drank all that water! Dun good food wise too. So is all going well.
Night all :)

BIWI · 13/01/2014 22:38

That sounds lovely, Thumbwitch!

Thumbwitch · 13/01/2014 22:42

Oh it was (sorry!). Better warm, but not too shabby cold either! can't be having that for breakfast every day though, will have to go out and buy some plain yoghurt today, as I'm guessing my lovely full fat yoghurt with strawberry and watermelon ripple isn't going to be acceptable! Grin

EvaTheOptimist · 13/01/2014 22:47

Thanks for your reply on the other thread Thumbwitch!

And the salmon breakfast sounds the business.

Morgan · 13/01/2014 22:55

Gone to bed after good first day - starting to feel a bit headaches burn think it's all in my mind !

B greek yog

L salad with cucumber , ham, cheese , bit of salami , mayo and oil

D two fried eggs, two rashers bacon chopped up , mushrooms and left over sprouts and broccoli on the side with butter

S bit more yog with extra thick cream

Is the extra thick cream ok - it is 4g carb bit higher than double cream ( mind you I am on Guernsey so the cream and butter are fab Grin) ?

Bit of a story as was supposed to have lamb , put it in the oven this am with timer set but unfortunately didn't set the oven temp so no cooked lamb when I got home so had to improvise .

ElBombero · 13/01/2014 23:04

Hi peeps, the soft lead up is a great idea. I already feel like I've achieved something, lost 7.5 Pds last week. Another 20 to go.

So today I had
B-3 ham rolls with philli, coconut coffee n a pint of water
L- 3 rashers bacon and a dozen of mushrooms
D- cauliflower rice, asparagus n a large chicken breast cooked in chill in Indian spices. Was delish!!
S-small salad with tuna

ChippingInWadesIn · 13/01/2014 23:04

morgan - 4g is high. Double cream will be about half that

SteeleyeStan · 13/01/2014 23:19

I'll also join in saying a big thanks to BIWI and Willie if I didn't do that already.

First day has been great for me. I've been feeling energetic and positive. I even made an inspiring picture of the "before" and "after" kind to show what happened on this diet of butter, cream, fatty meats etc between summers 2012 and 2013. (I went from 22/24 to 14/16 IIRC!) Can't wait to add another even nicer pic next summer. Grin

I ate what I'd planned to eat, although also ended up snacking on a few olives. Drank 3 litres of water. All good. :) DH struggled a bit without his mid-afternoon carby snack. He ended up buying Texas Joe's beef jerky, which doesn't actually look too bad, as far as jerky ingredients go. I guess if it keeps him off the crisps...

Some lovely meal ideas here and in the recipe thread!

CrabbyWinterBottom · 13/01/2014 23:27

Cider Hello!! Smile I haven't done anything on the food blog since the summer as it was quite time consuming and I fell into carby twatdom out of the habit. One of my NY's resolutions is to post more on my main blog (nature photography) so I reckon I'll resurrect the food one too - it motivates me to find/devise new recipes and keeps me focused on this WOE. How are you doing??

Yank how exciting! Are you planning to wow him with your Bootcamp-sculpted body and keep him for your own? Grin

Chipping "No drinkey water, no losey weight" make me Grin!

Staved off a post dibber craving for something sweet with a bowl of total greek yoghurt, mascarpone cheese and double cream, with flaxseed and loads of grated vanilla. It totally hit the spot!

CrabbyWinterBottom · 13/01/2014 23:28

Dibber? Dinner!

CheerfulYank · 13/01/2014 23:41

Oh yes Crabby. :o And I'm doing the Shred As well so I'm sure I will be basically irresistible!

Whoever was wondering about movie snacks, could you bring jerky?

getset · 13/01/2014 23:42

yes Lidl do! And they now do a turkish one too which is very thick (slightly higher carbs though I think).

Bugsylugs · 13/01/2014 23:43

Today has gone ok I think.

B total ff, lemon and ginger tea
Coffee with ss
L very late 3 few spoonfuls of total ff
S left overs
D butter chicken and Savoy cabbage.

The butter chicken is from the recipe thread tis excellent.
Probably 3l water.

dollywould · 14/01/2014 00:18

BIWI and Willie, thank you so much for running this again. You are responsible for me losing 9lb over the summer and feeling better than I ever have. I am responsible for putting it all back on since then Smile

I think today has gone ok - I expect to eat more today and tomorrow and less as the week goes on:

B: coffee with cream (one of the biggest perks of Bootcamp imo), a small wedge of brie, 2 grilled peppers and some olives.

L: Flowers to the MNer who posted a recipe for 'chicken nuggets'. Gorgeous! So fried chicken in parmesan, with a big green salad.

S: Salmon/cream cheese rolls. A whole small pack of salmon Blush It was very small…

D: DH made Cottage pie for me with celeriac topping, with cabbage in a stilton sauce. Delicious.

I've also managed to drink 3l of water. I may have a hump like a dromedary in the morning… It's possibly too much dairy and not enough veg yet but I'm happy that I didn't succumb to chocolate today. And I was sorely tempted.

It's so encouraging to see everyone else's meal plans on here - some lovely ideas for tomorrow's menu. Thank you everyone for sharing.

CheerfulYank · 14/01/2014 02:58

Just had cucumber and cream cheese and it was DIVINE. What's this "chicken nugget" recipe then??

Thumbwitch · 14/01/2014 03:08

Wotcher Cheerful! I have Joined. It's going ok so far (day 1! Grin)

I've just had lunch - shredded iceberg lettuce, carrot and cucumber with a large spoonful of olives, leftover egg mayo from yesterday, and about 10 mini mozarellas (they're called bocconcini here, and the ones I get are the bambini bocconcini, which are about the size of a large grape).

BUT! I did really well - DS2 had chocolate spread sandwich for lunch and I got chocolate spread on my fingers - did I lick it off? NO I DIDN'T! I washed it off! (you have no idea how much of an achievement this is...)

CheerfulYank · 14/01/2014 03:17

I found soy coffee creamer that only has one carb per tablespoon...it's probably full of nasties but maybe just half a tablespoon??

Thumbwitch · 14/01/2014 03:41

CY, that sounds utterly foul - tell me the make and I'll tell you what nasties it has in it :)
