Week 1 - New Year 2014 Low Carb Bootcamp - And We're Off!

Morning all!

I see several of you have already weighed in on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

As of today, though, we also have our bright, shiny, new Bootcamp section on Mumsnet, including our own Weight Tracker, which will only show your own weight/progress.

You can either use the Spreadsheet as we have done before, which everyone has access to and can see, or you can go here and enter your weight.

Obviously you can do both!

When you're in the new Bootcamp, if you click on the tab that says 'more info' that will take you to a section which has loads of information about low carbing, as well as Bootcamp Rules

Before we get going formally, I have to make an important disclaimer:

I am not a doctor, a medic, a scientist, a nutritionist or a dietician. I have no formal training in food, dieting or low carbing. The information that I provide here is based solely on my reading on the subject, as well as my own experience. If you have any kind of medical condition and/or you are taking any kind of ongoing medication, you should consult your GP before starting a low carb diet

That done, good luck everyone!

Cbeebijeebies

think of it as your body righting itself. In a couple of days, it will stop expecting sugar to beat the crashes it's used to.
If you give in today, you will be as tempted tomorrow. If you don't, it will get easier.
You've got to bite the bullet and ride the storm someday, so it might as well be today!

MrsHughJarse · 13/01/2014 15:37

brief illegal question ( illegal - as am at work.....)
Just doing the rest of my measurements - needed half a days rest after measuring my bum , twas so shocking....and no wonder those clothes in the wardrobe do not fit...

When measuring upper arms..... do you squeeze the wobbly batwings in with the tape measure, do it with bent arms/tense biceps so its less wobbly underneath or let them hang.......... ??

Sorry if have put anyoen off their tea !

Cbeebijeebies · 13/01/2014 15:38

Thank you.

I'm eating sweeter veg (all under 3g carbs per 100g) to try and curb it a bit.

I guess it goes to show how addictive sugary stuff is!
It literally feels like i've missed a 'hit' Shock

WillieWaggledagger · 13/01/2014 15:41

Cbeebijeebies it's normal - we are drawn to sugar as when it occurs naturally it is usually in things that are not poisonous, and usually indicates a source of energy... it's evolution

eerything whoknowswhocares says is true

try thinking to yourself "do i know what this tastes like? is it the first and last opportunity i will ever have to eat this?" - chances are the answers are yes and no. there is not like to be a worldwide brownie shortage any time soon, so you can do without for now

Cbeebijeebies · 13/01/2014 15:42

(On the plus side, I feel way more full up after much smaller meals at the moment. I keep making myself an average siezed portion of something and only eating 3/4's of it. I'll be happy if that's a frequent side effect Smile

WillieWaggledagger · 13/01/2014 15:43

mrshughjarse i'm not sure. i guess it depends whether you want to measure muscle increase or fat decrease??! but as long as you are consistent in the way that you measure i think that's the main thing

Piscivorus · 13/01/2014 15:54

I have a new favourite drink already! Smile
I drink coffee black and not too big, I use a Nespresso machine and make a lungo if that means anything to anybody. I have just put a spoonful of coconut oil into the cup and made the coffee into it. It was not at all oily, looked a bit frothy and a bit opaque as though there was a teeny tiny splash of milk in. It was gorgeous!

Has anyone else made the IPD egg and sausage muffins from one of the other threads? I tried this afternoon and think I have done it wrong as they seem quite soggy. Any pointers? Should I reduce the water?

I have been quite inspired by everyone's menus. So many yummy things!

heliumheart · 13/01/2014 16:36

Grumpy - I made these a few times when I LC'd before. I don't think the water will make a difference. When you say soggy what do you mean? Basically you end up with something resembling a baked crustless quiche (or omelette) ie. it should 'set' during baking, and with sausagey bits at the bottom.

GrumpyCrossPatch · 13/01/2014 16:44

Thanks helium. Maybe I have done it right then! I think I expected something more "solid" so to speak which is frankly ridiculous without some kind of flour. They taste good anyway which is the main thing.

heliumheart · 13/01/2014 16:47

:) IIRC they look more fluffy-like when they first come out of the oven but then sink a bit. They are delicious, although I found they brought out the piglet in me and I couldn't really be trusted around them. That whole "oh I'll eat two and put the rest in the fridge for later in the week" thing doesn't really work for me Blush

LucyVFood · 13/01/2014 16:55

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I guess it's a bit sobering more than anything else, but maybe that's a good thing.

Today includes:

B: Egg and sausage (Sainsbury's SO Organic sausages were about 1.6 per 100ml)
L: Chicken salad with mayo
D: Pork loin chops with buttery garlicky broccoli, asparagus, and spinach.

ThermoLobster · 13/01/2014 17:04

Hi all. Thanks for getting us all set up.
Did a soft start last week and shifted a few pounds, but put a couple on over weekend being norty! Drank few too many shandies last night so not done a proper start today due to feeling a bit ropey, but am getting going in earnest tomorrow!

CheerfulYank · 13/01/2014 17:35

Crabby and whoever else asked, I'm meeting Norman Reedus (Daryl). :o

I've had chicken and broccoli and water today, but I'm six hours behind you so will eat more later.

CiderwithBuda · 13/01/2014 17:47

Evening all. Forgot to say thanks to BIWI and willie for putting so much into this. You are fab.

Chipping - the soup maker seems a lot more labour intensive than just chopping up veg, shoving in a pan with stock and cooking and then blending! My soup was nice though. I'll give it a few more goes to see if it it's much as a white elephant as I think! DH is an accountant and reckons that if I use it once a week to use up veg we would otherwise junk that it will pay for itself in a year. He has soups a lot for lunch and buys those fresh ones from supermarkets so if he is here all week it's prob about £6 on soup!

I know what you mean about wanting soup with 'something'. I had a couple of sausages - Black Farmer 97% pork ones.

For those of you feeling despondent about your weight I know just how you feel! So annoyed with myself. I lost almost 3 stone on weight watchers 2 years ago and have now put two back on. A stone of that is since october! So Fed up I was even toying with the idea of doing lighter life.

I turn 50 this year too. Have spent my forties and most of my thirties being fat. Fed up. Am not healthy. So this is IT! I am off to New York at the beginning of May and want to buy normal clothes not plus size. Then I'm off to Portugal in July with a friend to chaperone her 17 year old dd and her friends. 5 gorgeous slim 17 year olds around the pool! Yikes!

Dinner tonight will be either chicken curry with stir fried broccoli and leek or meatballs with broccoli and leek.

Crabby - hi! Are you still doing your blog? Your food is always amazing. I'm going to try your bubble and squeak tomorrow. Sounds good.

GrumpyCrossPatch · 13/01/2014 17:49

helium yes, the sinking made me a touch anxious but it sounds like sinking is expected!

LittleMissDisorganized · 13/01/2014 17:50

Thank you Athelstane and ChippingIn for the lovely affirmation.

I have got this bloomin headache back so take some more paracetamol then and made the mistake of telling a couple of people my plans and got a mixture of one apparently knowing everything there is to know about LCing (but starving herself) and a family member who is diabetic and obese telling me that it's different 'losing weight', to 'eating with' diabetes/obesity. Aaargh!

Oh well, hope the results will back up that I have done a bit of research AND have some commitment to reversing the damage I did last year.

WillieWaggledagger · 13/01/2014 17:59

i have to say that while the thanks are lovely, it really is BIWI who puts in all the effort! i just fanny about with a spreadsheet every now and then!

Notsoskinnyminny · 13/01/2014 18:15

Day 1 and so far so good. I did so well with this WOE 2 years ago but made the mistake of thinking I could eat 'normal' food at the weekend with DH to keep him happy and piled the weight on. I love his roasties but they don't love me Grin

Today I've had

B - sausage & egg muffins
L - green veg soup with grated cheese and a slice of belly pork
D - chilli with cauli rice

Already drank 2l and had 1 coffee with cream, no snacks because I was on my own in the office so too busy but resisted the chocolates/biscuits in the staffroom.

MrsJoeHart · 13/01/2014 18:18

Another big thank you to BIWI and Willi, I've been going since last Monday and down by 6lbs, DH has lost 5.

I haven't been able to eat much today as am on antibiotics that dictate you can't eat for an hour before taking one and then two hours after, so with work and other commitments today it's been hard. Looking forward to something yummy for supper though.

sueh95 · 13/01/2014 18:23

Thanks BIWI and Willie for all your efforts.

Have posted weight on SOF and the new LC area - hoping to shed about 28lbs on this WOE - I know it can be done as its the only way I've ever lost weight before - just don't know why I didn't keep it up!

B - eggs/mayo
L - salad & meat
D - veg soup with cream, cheese slices.

Water - need about another litre - I can see a few nocturnal trips to the loo beckoning but its a price worth paying.

Good luck everyone!!!

Yama · 13/01/2014 18:27

So good to be back on the wagon.

Today I've had:

B - Scrambled eggs with lashings of butter and parma ham.
S - Two polish snack sausages (from Aldi).
L - Salad with chicken, cheese and corned beef.
D - Bolognaise with roasted cauli-flower and carrots (minimal).

Have had 3 and a half pints of water so far (and two coffees).

Feeling good. Smile
