Am single mum to 3 1/2 year old dd. In the last month I have done christmas with all trimmings for family, put up tree (twice, long story) made no money stretch to all longed-for presents, written 100 cards, negotiated contact order and ex-husband (selfish idiot) been to ice show, two christmas services, a carol concert and three nativities (all featuring dd)pretended and a panto. Built four snowmen, been sledging, socialised with neighbours, cleaned house (why, anybody?)made a christmas cake and mincepies with dd who loves baking, constructed paper chains and xmas present craft kits. Fixed two toys, changed a dozen batteries, been to an angel ceremony (too tired to explain) and cleaned house again. Oh, and been to work. Exhausted, elated that dd has had time of her life on first christmas that has really registered with her. I know I haven't done anything more than any other parent but on your own it is hard to do all the work and still enjoy Christmas, when it can be especially painful.....and I know I'm not alone as a single parent in finding the festive season heartbreaking. So hats off to all of us who've done the marathon, swallowed the misery and put to bed exhausted delighted children whose memories of christmas will be just as happy as other kids in easier situations.
And roll on work, where i can have a rest!
