Guess what, I bled a radiator today, isnt this my first step to realising and accepting i'm a lone parent. I am well pleased with myself after all the analysing I have been doing about my ex, i have done something for myself. I know its stupid but i needed to share this excitement with someone.

Well done. I felt the same when I hung a picture up

ChasingSquirrels · 13/01/2009 21:25

made me smile reading his - well done!

MUMDONEGOOD · 13/01/2009 21:28

Thanks. You know what it means so much to me as I always rely on ex to do this type of thing, I dont feel I have to anymore.

Co-incidence - bled my radiators for the first time on Sunday but still dont know how to hang pictures.
Its the next on my list

ANTagony · 13/01/2009 21:29

Well done. Quick note from lesson I found out the hard way.... if you regularly have to bleed, or bled a lot of air, watch the boiler pressure it may drop down and then not ignite. Easy to rectify by re-pressuring (let more water into the system) usually a valve (Tap) below the boiler.

MUMDONEGOOD · 13/01/2009 21:30

You can do it, I might try it myself, dd always asking for pictures in her bedroom.

this is all brilliant to hear
take heart
you will manage!!

mamas12 · 13/01/2009 22:18

Yehey go you! It is a bloody faff having to learn yet more stuff to do your own isn't it.
There is something to do in every room in my house because I have to learn how to do it first. i.e. put up pics and shelves and doors and blinds - it goes on! Used to have a few 'men that did' but unfortunately since divorce one of them has died and the other has declared his undyling love for me, so now I really do have to do alone!!

mamas12 · 13/01/2009 22:20

omg just read that back and sounds very 'carry on diy' doesn't it. Sorry!

skramblenotdieting · 14/01/2009 13:26

Well done, good on you. Why not look out for a DIY book in the charity shops, always some for sale.

My problem is not my ability to do DIY but my in ablility to actualy get my arse into gear and do it. I find with it just being me I just let things go like lights etc that need replacing. I am perfectly capable as I have always done all the stuff like that myself anyway exH was pretty useless and was never there anyway.

elastamum · 14/01/2009 22:13

Hi All,

Well done MDW!!

I built a supersize wheelbarrow at the weekend (so I can muck out my horses real fast before work) and last week I assembled a double bed all by myself! I used to do all this kind of stuff before I met my H and am just starting to rediscover what I can do for myself too

ninah · 15/01/2009 00:06

I felt the same when I fixed the headlight on my car with a spare from scrap yard! Yay!
(although when I put a picture up I hit an electric cable and sent my entire kitchen live - you need a gadget that tells you where not to hammer. Still sorted in the end tho!)

aseriouslyblondemoment · 15/01/2009 10:40

have to say this
what is especially gratifying
is the look of amazement
on the exh's face
when he realises that actually i am perfectly capable of doing things without help
nor do i require a medal for doing so!

MUMDONEGOOD · 15/01/2009 17:39

Great to hear all these achievements because thats what they are. Am deciding what to do next. You know what from this new year I feel stronger and don't feel so upset that I haven't got a man in my life, its only taken eight years. Lets hope I stay this way still first month of year. Heres to all us Lone Parents.

Well done, everyone, ok so we had men to do this stuff before but let's face women can do it better! well most if it anyway!

skramble · 17/01/2009 00:02

Well I fitted new kitchen lights today, after ages using DD's bedside light , scary how crappy the wiring was on the lights I was replacing .

Sad thing was my exH never used to do these things, anything I couldn't manage it was my FIL and my lovely BIL that would help.
