Why it's crap to be on your own and not own a car or "Why a trip to A&E cost me £55"

I was waiting the the doctor's surgery with a friend, and ds2 split his lip on the coffee table in the waiting room. I mean he has slit his li right open.

So I went to see the nurses in the minor treatment unit.

"Oh that needs a stitch"

Ok, are you sure? Because it would be lovely if you could treat this here....

"No, it definitely needs a stitch, you have to take him to A & E."

A and E on Thorpe Road?

"No, that's gone, it's closed down. A & E in "

Righto.

So, I called my mum, my dad, my sister, none could take me. So I called a taxi.

£27.50 there. £27.50 back.

To be told by the (very nice!) streaming nurse "Oh no, we don't stitch lips, especially not on children this small because they have to have it done under a general. It will heal on it's own. I will get MacFac to check it though, seeing as you've come 20 miles."

To be told by the nice doctor

"Oh no, we don't stitch lips, especially not on children this small, it's inside anyway and it will heal in 5 days max. Don't give him any crisps. Try not to let him poke it."

And when I got back, £55 down, I realised that no sooner had my Income Support gone in than it was gone.

Don't get me wrong, we aren't going to starve, we will eat as I am an expert at budgetting and I budget for disaster well before disaster strikes, but God I could cry, I could really cry at how quickly money can flow though my fingers despite my best efforts, and how little people can understand about your life that they don't even realise that one phone call could have changed my week.

Colditz - how crap for you

EachPeachPearMum · 03/06/2008 12:34

Oh colditz, thats so crap.
Sorry, about your rubbish day, and hope he heals really quickly.

SmugColditz · 03/06/2008 12:35

Thank you

for you, at the price of a taxi ...

Rosa · 03/06/2008 12:36

What a complete pain.are there any of those voluntary drivers in your area ..Maybe not for getting there but if needed getting back?
Hoping that you manage to hang on to your next income support I hope you told surgery whet they said at A+E!

Miaou · 03/06/2008 12:37

What a mare colditz!! poor you!

TheFallenMadonna · 03/06/2008 12:40

Blimey. That is pretty crap. You should write to the minor injuries unit and let them know that you were given the wrong advice by them. Won't help you of course , but they should know that really.

He will heal quickly. DS did this while we were on holiday a few years ago and we were panicking because we were nowhere near a hospital (and in Mexico) but fortunately there were some very nice first aiders who cleaned him up and gave us better advice then you got.

TheFallenMadonna · 03/06/2008 12:42

Meant to add, he was split right through (hole in his face but one dose of calpol and a good night's sleep and it was already healing beautifully by the next day.

posieflump · 03/06/2008 12:45

I would write to your doctor's surgery and complain that their advice is not up to date

SmugColditz · 03/06/2008 12:47

Well, the streaming nurse at the hospital said she would be letting them know.

The thing is, by the time we were at the hospital, he was happy and not bleeding any more.

He is living on cake and milk though because I can't bear to make him sad by making him eat boring mashed potato, and smushy cereal. I am well away that this is far from ideal. I'll be providing cheesey mash tonight!

Ah yes colditz I had recent trip to A&E with 4yo DD regarding lip/tooth/gum injury and it was the same - other than come back to see dental team in two days - but fortunately I had DH's company car at my disposal so only cost me exhorbitant parking fee. Just give her calpol - well I could have done that hours ago if I had not been sat in your waiting room, surely as a hospital you could spare 5ml of calpol as it is now 8pm. I ended up stopping off at little Tesco thingie.

But I did end up sitting her on my knee and feeding her mashed up banana from weening spoon.

Poor DS2
And what a bugger about the £55.

What's going on with the Income Support - have they messed up?

SmugColditz · 03/06/2008 13:41

No, it's just that IS is £60 and it went on the taxi fare, that's what I meant. got it fine, but it's gone. Gutted, really.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood.
Tis still a bummer of the highest order.

PurpleOne · 03/06/2008 15:27

Did you not get a cab reciept?

I'm sure the DWP reimburse. I claimed all my travel fares back from GOSH when my dd went there a few times.
Just a thought?

NigellaTheUndomesticGoddess · 03/06/2008 15:33

Can you see if the hospital can reimburse you. I know where i work people claiming income support/disability etc can get refunds for public transport if they need to visit the hospital. worth a try at least.
poor DS too. cake for a while won't matter a jot.

I didn't get a receipt, it didn't occur to me that I could claim the cost back. Who do I give the form to?

SmugColditz · 03/06/2008 16:13

Thank you MillieC, that's really helpful, I've printed that off and will take it to the doctors tomorrow to see what they can do about it.

Phone the taxi firm and ask if they can do you a receipt

EachPeachPearMum · 03/06/2008 20:04

Wow- this is what I love about mn- between us, we know everything

Who knew you could get hospital travel costs back?

nametaken · 03/06/2008 20:07

This is what annoys me about doctors and minor injury units

NOT EVERYONE IS A CAR DRIVER

hope your son's OK now.

KatieScarlett2833 · 08/06/2008 12:27
