How much housing benefit would i be entitled to for house with 2 dc (differennt sexes)?

Following on from my other thread about buying a flat due to split from ex, i am thinking about renting, but can only do this if i can get housing benefit..(i dont really work properly,only now have maintenance and tax credits as income).

All the 3 bed houses available are around £1200 a month where we live! but i could pay around £300 of that myself and also ex will pay me around £200-300. So would i be entitled to the remaining £700 in housing benefit?????

Have done the online calculator but it makes no sense to me!!

(Around 6yrs ago i received £520 a month for a 2-bed flat, just me and dd.)

go to the council and ask them about it they can do a pre rent thing where they tell you tell you how much benefit you will get if you have a house in mind

It all depends on how much the rent on the house is & how much the rent officer values is it & if they think it is over priced.

also depends on how much you earn if you work & if you have any savings.

I think you are only allowed £3000 in savings anything else they take into consideration.

depends on how old the dc are. they may say you only need a 2 bedroom place.

read your other thread, could you do 6months/years rent up front from equity of house?

my dc are 8 and 4.

dont want to waste the equity from the house as its the money my dad left me when he died, but would that be fraud??

yes it would. they wont grant you housing benefit with 80k (was that the amount you said?) in the bank.

we had 26k from the sale of our flat. we paid 6months rent up front, byu the time we had to pay rent again, dh was ill and we qualified for HB. we had to send in proof of where all the money had gone as well (paying debts)

I thought from your other thread that you would end up with a lot of equity from the house. Is HB given whether or not you have a large amount of savings? It is worth checking out I think.

I was under the impression you could get help with paying the interest on a mortgage if you were going to have to sell and would otherwise be entitled to housing benefit? Seems a shame to 'waste' your equity paying rent so I see where you are coming from.

no, with my council you dont get help paying an interest-only mortgage. well, you do, but only if the mortgage is under 100k.And mine is not.

They've tightened up mortgage related benefits. with savings of over 15k ish you would n't be entitled and "giving" it away would be seen as evasion. what about looking for part ownership ? You may still get some HB onthe renatl element ?

If you live with a partner, only one of you can get Housing Benefit.
Unless you are aged 60 or over and receive the guarantee credit of Pension Credit, savings over £16,000 usually mean you cannot get Housing Benefit.

Savings over £3,000 (£6,000 if you or your partner are aged 60 or over) affect how much Housing Benefit you can get. From 10 April 2006, this will increase to £6,000 for all.

There are special rules if you are single and aged under 25 years.

If you have come to the United Kingdom (UK) within two years of your claim, this may affect Housing Benefit.

Most asylum seekers and people who are sponsored to be in the UK cannot get Housing Benefit.

You cannot usually get Housing Benefit if you live in a close relative's household.

You cannot usually get Housing Benefit if you are a full-time student, unless you are disabled or have children.

We use partner to mean a person you are married to or a person you are living with as if you are married to them.

Nope you are only allowed £3000 savings & so are your children, my friend split form her marriage with 2 girls they had to sell the house she got equity, she had to get all proof of where the money went & all statements from her bank & the kids banks, if they feel you have just wasted the money on purpose they don't pay either.

It is a waste but it's right i suppose because housing benefit is for people who are struggling & can't afford there rent.

My understanding is that they will want to know what happened to the 80K and if you have 'given' it away they may refuse you housing benefit as theoretically you had the means to pay rent.

If you have 80k can you not get a more typical job that would allow you to get a mortgage on a modest house or flat.

oh god.
so i am well and truly fucked.

i cant afford the house im in.
i cant afford to buy a 2-bed flat.
i cant afford to buy a 1-bed flat either.
i cant afford to rent a house or flat on my earnings.
im not allowed to apply for housing benefit because of the 80k.
i cant apply for shared ownership as every site i look at says you must be earning around 35-40k as a single parent.

So what do i do?????????????????

you will have £80k, pay rent whilst looking for a job/studying etc.
