Why would you want to do that?

Snowflake2 · 15/01/2023 02:41

Of course you can you just don't apply for it. Why on earth you'd want to do that if you're entitled to it, I don't know. I can't see any plusses to doing this at all. Only the poorest in society are entitled to housing benefit, so how are you planning to pay your rent?

I believe that you need to actually apply for the housing element on UC. So if you don’t want it, don’t apply?

When Covid first happened me and DH applied for UC as the restaurants we worked for were closed by the government.

The housing element form asked for our landlord’s details, and I was afraid to enter them as we were worried that the LL’s insurance would not allow a tenant stay who was on housing benefit. So we just never filled out that particular form.

Then luckily furlough kicked in so we were able to cancel the whole UC application. However, it did seem possible to apply for benefits without applying for the housing element.

Hope this helps.

Not sure why you'd want to?

The money is paid to you, the LL would never know what you were claiming.

The DWP ask for details in case they ever need to look into it. Eg if they suspected fraud.

Why do you want to do that?

Kaffiene · 17/01/2023 19:59

Do you meaning the housing element part of UC or housing benefit. Housing benefit is used if you are in temporary accom & is paid directly to the landlord but housing element is usually paid to you but you can ask for it to be paid directly to LL.
of course you don’t have to apply for any benefit to you don’t want to but like others have said. Why would you not want to.

Of course you can opp out,

But it makes no logical or financial sense to not want these things you're entitled to.. not to me anyways..why would you do that??
.

Why add on another expense that you will be solely responsible for?

Are you rich now or something??

Are you living with someone not paying or able to pay???
