Renting as a single mum in London. Let’s team up!

Single mum can relate to how difficult to rent privately as a single mum as they usually prefer couples as two incomes better then one. So I am looking to team up with another single mum to privately rent in Central London.
I have a young toddler, so ideally someone with similar age child, so they can play together and make friends.

I am currently working part time but want to go back full time, so if another mum also will work full time, we could help each other with childcare, cause childcare is so expensive. So I could stay with kids on my days off and she could stay on her days off, then we would need nursery only one or two days a week, which is much more affordable.

so please let me know your thoughts, cause I can’t see any other solution to rent in decent area and get back full time then sharing house with another mum. This way, we won’t need to stay on benefits (that prevent us finding good flat and won’t need to spend whole monthly salary on nursery).

Thank you for your comment. Yes, many people don’t know what they are entitled to and it’s ok. We all are doing our best and learning along the way.

Did you manage to find someone to share with eventually? I would honestly love to do this! I've a 17 month old daughter. I used to earn good money before I became a mum and now it's hard to get the time to work more than 10 hours a week from home as I'm not getting much free childcare from my family or my partner ( who's a bully).
I love the idea of having a sharing meals and childcare together and working as a team.
I live in Hackney / islington if anyone else is interested in buddying up to find a nice house share?

Just out of interest, does the dad pay child maintenance?

Hello Kaisy - Are you still looking for a mum to team up? I am inquiring for a friend. If you are no longer looking but have any tips, would be great to know!

Hi, I was literally just searching single mum communes in London haha and came across this! I have struggled so much to get a rented place being a single parent as either I'm turned down for a single income (with couples bidding more) or they say a baby would be over-crowding... I am currently at a friend of a friend's place but I am only able to stay here until October. Is anyone still looking? I have a currently 15 month old little boy and he is in nursery in West Norwood so I would need to stay in Lambeth.

What a fantastic thread. I'm looking for a flat/house share. I'm in the unique situation that I live in Scotland but for various reasons I've got three job interviews which will bring me to work in London 2-3 days a week.

I have a 13 month year old daughter and love the thought of living with someone who knows both the ups & downs of being a solo parent in this day and age.

I love food, arts, culture and having a good laugh & chat. I'm quite flexible in terms of location so if anyone is still looking I'd love to chat 😊.

Hi, I am still looking! I am limited to Lambeth area because of where my son is for nursery at the moment but love the idea of living with another single parent! When would you be looking? Happy to chat to see if possible/we would get along? My name is Tuesday, also a fan of food, art and laughing!

Hello,
I am a 34 year old with a toddler keen to move back to London. My son is turning 3 in June. Have lived in London for 6 years prior to moving out because of covid-19 so know london like the back of my hand. LOVE the idea of teaming up with another lady with similar circumstances and renting a house or a large flat in London.
Please get in touch :-)

I have a son 7 and will like this arrangement but I’m curious on why it has to be central London of all places.

Donnnna · 11/10/2023 12:57

As a single mum it’s been really difficult getting a place to rent, I will like to know if there is any working mum/family with kid/kids who has a spare room to rent on an arrangement that could be mutually beneficial, I have a 7 year old son. if I could see a mum who works and may need some days of support, we could help each other with childcare and school runs and save ourselves some expenses and time and enable me work 2 or 3 times a week. So I could stay with kids on my days off and she could stay on her days off.

Redruby2020 · 11/10/2023 13:24

Wow i want a job that pays 6 figures!

It all depends… if you work full time, you won’t get £700 from UC. But if you don’t, you will have much less to live on. So working is so much better option. If you work full- time, I think you can get only about £200-250 extra, plus house benefit, so it’s quite good

No you don't get housing benefit, unless you are in council accommodation etc. You just get the housing element under UC.

Hi, are you still searching? I am interested in similar arrangement as a single parent with a son. I have a two bed in South Croydon and would like to share with a single mum as well.

Is anyone still interested in a service like this?

I have put a post today on the business/entrepreneurs forum about a new service if you want to have a look.
