Becoming a single parent - finances

Potentially separating from husband and just trying to work out what my financial situation would look like. We're quite lucky and are comfortable financially so it's quite scary knowing that as a single parent I may struggle. I have a fairly well paid job but I only work 3 days a week. DS is nearly 3 so will get his free 30 hours soon so I could probably increase my working hours.
I've used the benefit calculators and I could possibly get help with rent and childcare (we'd need to sell family home).
Please can anyone share their experiences of what making this life change was like?
I'm trying to think of the good things that will come of it (having own freedom, etc) but I can't help but worry about how I'll manage.

You need to have a chat with a solicitor because you might get more than 50% as the child needs a home with the primary carer, it’s not always 50:50.
Will dad want him 50% do you think, as if not there’s maintenance due.

I do need to speak to one. I should be able to next week. He'd likely have him 1 or 2 nights a week, just because of his working hours/days.
