Housing advice!

So I'm currently living with my parents after husband walked out on me last year. I work PT, credit rating isn't amazing and I have 2 children. I put myself on the social housing list but I'm cat D so I know it's unlikely I'll get a house :(. My plan is to save a bank of money for furniture etc and hopefully rent somewhere next year because our house is full past capacity and I need to move forward with my life. But how difficult is renting for people like me? How does the UC housing benifit work? How likely could I rent through a letting agency or does it have to be private rentals?
This is such a minefield for me and I'm feeling quite anxious. Ex told me I'd never get. A place because I'm a PT single mum and no agency would approve me :(

Go in and talk to local letting agents. And see what they say. Have a look at the turn2us website it will calculate your benefits. As I understand there is a housing element which is restricted to where you live. Have a google km sure it will give you an answer.

I think renting can be a trap if you are not careful.

I would say sort out your money situation with a view of fixing your credit rating. Remember there are shared ownership schemes you can work towards, make sure you save and cut on your spending, if you can side gig anything do. It’s all possible but needs commitment and direction, you can do it! Lots of good advise here aswell
