Single mum looking to emigrating to Australia - Any advice

Hello, I am thinking of looking at ways I can emigrate to Australia or at least try and go over for two years to work. I'm a single parent, 45 with a 13 year old. I'm looking at possibilities due to my age and also how to avoid the father's permission (has never paid for our daughter and hasn't seen her is 7 years) has anyone does this, doing this? I have friends there but no family, family in NZ though. Looking at the option of asap or waiting until my daughter has her GCSEs.... No idea where to start. Any advice or information would be greatly received. X

I think you’d need a job and be sponsored. I think you are too old for a normal working visa until you are in a niche job that Australia need. I think there is a points calculator.

Why Australia and just for 2 years? Agree with need for a niche job.

You maybe better posting in the ex-pats section. My sister lived in Qld for 7years with Oz DH they came back to UK have been here last 9yrs but all have duel nationality. We looked at going out too but decided not too. The cost of living is really high, rentals hard to get with long commute to work due to distances. On balance we were better living in UK. So consider what’s really important in your life, we actually found it too hot to do lots of the outside stuff we do here.
Over 45 you will need private medical care, and GPs charge for every visit. I’m not being defeatist just go in with your eyes wide open, it’s an adventure but a lot of brits come back again after a couple of years it may not be the cheap paradise some imagine. My sister lost power regularly due to storms with flooding they got cut off for days etc. Much more extreme weather. I’d love to go back to NZ though much preferred thereSmile

Is your job on the skills needed list? ( is that even a thing anymore I’ve not looked since before covid all kicked off)

Australian here - It’s extremely difficult to enter Australia at the moment, our borders are still closed to non residents and any non resident wanting to get in needs an exemption - like if an employer sponsors you for your working visa. Expect 2 weeks of hotel quarantine when you arrive - at your expense, about $2000 per person.

But as PP have said, you need to be on the desirable skills list to have an employer sponsor you. You are also required to have private health insurance while you’re here too.

The trick is, even once you find an employer to sponsor you, the waitlist to actually get in the country is quite long. Our international arrivals are capped at less than 4000 people per week (but that’s including residents).

You’ll both need to be fully vaccinated too.

Sorry to sound so doom and gloom, just trying to give you a realistic picture of how difficult it’s going to be to get here. My in laws can’t even get here for our wedding next year (probably).

But if you do get here, it will all be worth it. My other half came out here on a working visa and never went back, says it’s the best thing he ever did. Good luck!

You need dad’s consent to take your child to Oz...if you take them without it -child abduction. If he doesn’t consent you must get the courts permission. Feel free to ask for more info-I’m a family solicitor

I believe that once you're over 50 Oz won't even consider you so I'd think quickly if I were you. And agree with pp about father's permission (even if he's an absent parent).
