Child maintenance- 16+

Hi

Does anyone know what happens regard to child maintenance when the child leaves school? Is it like child benefit and it continues as long as they stay on in full time Ed? If so do I need to notify them?

The reason I'm asking is normally by now I've had the letter stating how much DS's Dad should be paying - our year runs sept-Aug. I haven't had anything yet and I asked his Dad and he claims he hasn't either.

I think he's possibly on the fiddle ( non tax paying) so could this be why I haven't had anything? Or could it be due to DS's age?

I will call them, I'm just preparing myself for what they might say. Ex has been in trouble before for fraud - and done time for it- so this could be disastrous if he's being fraudulent again!!

Thanks

It is until they leave full time education, ie alevels. So you would have another two years of it. Unless they have left school for apprenticeship.
If you haven’t got an online account with them, register for one.

We never got a letter through for renewal but there was one in the online account (mid lockdown). Lockdown has slowed everything down so probably the same for you letters too.

But most stuff can be done online - so I’d register for one.

I had a letter in January when DD turned 16 asking me as the RP confirm if she was remaining in FT education and which institution that education was going to occur at.

Thank you both, @Lonecatwithkitten - I had that letter for child benefit, I wonder if the same form is used for child maintenance? I've only just sent it back as was waiting to confirm the college

@frustrationcentral I don't get child benefit - lone parent, but earn too much so definitely child maintenance and it was that nasty thin paper they use.

Thanks @Lonecatwithkitten , I don't think I've had that letter but it's been a while since DS turned 16 so I might have forgotten!! I'll get in touch with them
