Ok new thread.

What do you get with each?
What are the drawbacks of either?
What do they count or not count for each?
What extra benefits or allowances do you get with each?

Who do I ask to speak to at the JC as they don't even like people in the door unless you are signing on?

Maintenance is a big factor for me as H is being reasonable about this and I would prefer a private agreement.

Do I just go in and ask for them or can I do it via the phone so I don't have to dodge the junkies. Its hellish for all the mums with young kids that have to take them with them, all the layabouts seem to hang out outside beforegoing off to get more drink or drugs.

I think you could ring up and make an appointment, if you just go in, they will send you away with an appointment.

I rang up as there's usually a wait before you can see someone. If you ask for an appointment with the Lone Parent Advisor. They asked me for my National Insurance Number so they had my details. They're really helpful though so I'd definitely advise going to see them. I know what you mean about JCs though, I hate going to them.

tax credits are for the children, income support is for you.

just fill in the forms with all the data, inc maintance payments from ex, and they will tell you if you are entitled or not.

skribble if you ex is going to be paying maintenance then you wont be entitled to income support unless the money he pays you is under £59 per week, when on IS you cant keep the maintenance except £10 a week but you can get mortgage interest payments after a certain waiting time and full coucil tax rebate, your children would also be eligible for free school meals. If you worked part time you can claim council tax benefit, working tax credit, child tax credit, nursery fees, and keep the whole of your maintenance, I think this would be the better option for you especially when you are trying to get another mortgage.
