Recently split from my partner (on quite good terms) we have a 3 month old who I take round to his dads every night. He's asking for him overnight (understandable he wants to see him more) however my son is used to being with me all the time and I'm not sure what's reasonable in how often he should have him. My ex also drinks too much, I don't think he would drink when our son is in his care but it is also a concern for me. Any advice on letting our son stay over, I feel hes too young but very aware he needs his dad too

Are you BF?

Rtmhwales · 16/08/2019 18:03

The advice is little but often for contact with a baby in the first year or so. Overnights will only happen if you want them to. I guess it depends on how much you trust your ex/baby's dad and if you want or need a break overnight?

Nope I wouldn’t do this bf or not! 3 months is too young

SlightlyMisplacedSingleDad · 17/08/2019 16:57

No reason not to have overnights if the baby is not breast fed.

The drinking is irrelevant because you've said you don't believe he will drink with the baby there.

It's in your baby's interests to build a strong bond with both of his parents, amd that is best served by having meaningful time with each of you. That also ensures that both parents are able to pay a full role in all aspects of raising your shared son.

Pumpkin, BF is relevant and courts do consider it, hence why I asked.

PumpkinP · 18/08/2019 00:58

I thought courts recommended little and often at this age and overnights at around 2? I’ve only read it on here tbh though so don’t know how true that is, but either way I wouldn’t be sending my 3 month old off even if I did ff (luckily I bf and ex didn’t want to see her anyway Hmm )

Newtothis213 · 19/08/2019 14:46

My son isn't breastfed.

@SlightlyMisplacedSingleDad thanks for the input, to clarify i don't 'think' he would drink but what if he did...several different occasions i have found alcohol in juice bottles, in his daughters bed, he's not went to work for days in a row as he's been drunk.

I totally appreciate the need to have a relationship with both parents which is why I'm taking my son to see him daily but overnight with such a young baby is a big deal.

I think 3 months is too young for overnights away from the primary caregiver. I would keep on with little and often then reassess in a few months time.
